I'm in fifth grade and was in my school's geographic bee last year... trying to get to state this year! Got eliminated after the second round last year :b
I have to admit, I've been watching this video at least twice a year since its upload, and it's really motivated and inspired me in my college career. Mad props to you dhalliday! :)
@mikedrawls41 lol - big thanks, man! I was working at CNN at the time, and I called in "sick" to go cover this b/c I heard that Alex would be there. I'm a geography buff, but most of these questions stumped me.
lake titicaca is a lugit lake just because it doesnt sound right to your perverted mind doesnt mean that it means something ENTIRELY different in another language
when i was in 6th grade i came in 9th in my school when i was in 7th grade i came in 6th and i'm hoping to get into the top three. all i have to do to get into the whole school part i already won my class know i have to at lest be in the top three from all the other periods to get in into the school part it would be amazing if i come in first in my school but i don't want to take anything less then 3rd in my school
wow i think i am going to end up joining the geography bee because I scored the highest on a geography test out of everyone in my entire grade. i even scored higher than my very social studies teacher
at this age i would have got these questions right, i was into geography since a young age, but i am amazed how these children revise so much. I would have got these questions wrong if I arrived unprepared but i have to give it to these kids. its a shame they dont have geo bee over the pond in the Uk. :(
yes gangsta im from ann arbor r u going to U of M or MSU? Just wondering im 16 and i work at U of M in the atmospheric oceanic and space sciences lab i can hook u up with free tuition! (not really lol )
Okay, I need these questions. Last night was the preliminary round at my school and I got into the top round. Friday will be my first geography bee so can you tell me the questions. I'm so stupid when it comes to geography!
Surprisingly I got most of the answers right (with a few educated guesses). I didn't get the Cambrian mountain question though. I am 27 years old, a geography fanatic, and I have to say, I do NOT want to compete with these kids!!
I won Ohio in 2004 and managed to get in the top ten. Alex Trebek had to practice saying my name ten times in the back room. And then there was the whole thing about cicadas.
Wow is this video bringing back memories. 'Sup Gotham! I won FL in 2004. I got the worst seat in the prelims....any other and I would have been on stage. I competed against Neeraj and Yeshwanth in the AAA Travel Challenge in 2007.
Why, yes, I am a nerd. Why do you ask?
haha ok so now that I've officially come off as one......ooh, I miss my geography bee days. Good times.
Having au-pairs while growing up is great for kids because it exposes them to other cultures. I had ten by the time it was eleven and am very interested in geography and cultures. Unfortunately I am an almost state champion:(
They learned, and their parents inspires them to be educated unlike many people in the US or else where even though these kids are living in the US. It is culture thing.
I came sixth/seventh in the Connecticut State bee. I can't tell you what the questions are like since the same booklet is used by each state and next year is my last year. If I tell you the questions I'll feel like I've generated bad karma for next year. Sorry.
I was one of the top ten finalists in 2004. Since I'm Indian too, Alex Trebek couldn't pronounce my name. It took him five tries in the back room to get it right.
These kids truly have a vast range of knowledge which is truly admirable!
I don't however see the point for people who comment on this video to talking or boast about yourselves on the comments. "I knew every one except the last".
I just feel like, great... good for you. But lets not brag here. I doesn't do anyone any good except boost your ego with a "social steroid".
Im sure there are exceptions to the rule. I am not assuming anything bro. And for the record, I am not discriminating against people who are from India. Smart people come from all racial backgrounds. But the stats show that people with higher intelligence level on average have a more limited social life.
I was a national finalist in 1999. The good news is that most of these kids actually do grow up to be well-adjusted and normal, just really smart. Some of them (usually the home schooled ones) aren't as lucky. I credit public school for giving me more social skills.
That last question wasn't correct! I'm Welsh, and I can tell you that the Cambrian mountains don't go to the Bristol Channel. The Cambrians aren't usually named as a mountain range here, as they're made up of many smaller ranges such as Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog. They end around Cwmtawe, and go near England.
This, and many of the youth intelligence competitions, are strong evidence towards the "dumbing-down" of American youth. Nothing against immigrant families...all against American priorities.
You American have the duty to be grateful to the foreign presence in your country. It is thanks to these foreigners that the USA keeps between the great ones, e not thanks to the natives.
Um, the grat majority of the natives were killed, and their land was stolen. The few natives who survived the white assholes' cruelty were thrown onto shitty reservations to fend for themselves. Learn some fucking American history, you idiot.
Not to sound racist, but it always seems like the kids whose parents are either from India, Japan, or Korea in these competitions. Almost without exception, because our own kids don't have good studying habits, and don't care.
I teach Geography part-time at a community college in southern California. The state of geographic education in America overall is dismal. These Indian kids are pushed by their parents. Same with Asian families. Non-immigrant American families, in general, don't value edcuation. And they certainly don't value geographic education. Government policy is partly to blame. See Harm deBlij's Why Geography Matters for an explanation. Great book.
Most of these kids were pretty normal, considering. (For those that aren't homeschooled) I bet they take a lot of flak in middle school, and i know they'll take a lot of flak in high school, but they're fairly sociable and gregarious.
fuuuuck, if I would have been told about this when I was in 6th grade, I would have just said "fuck school work, I am going to learn everything about the world." But then again, I bet all these kids were homeschooled, so they didn't really have to worry about really tedious schoolwork anyway. that's really the way to go if you want your kids to be hella smart--you teach them the concepts, and leave out the tedium.
and make them have no social skills to speak of. That is not the way to raise a kid man. They need to have a life outside of books, see the fucking world, make friends, not sequester themselves in study rooms
I think it's all about striking a balance. Like, I would want to homeschool my kids through 5th or 6th grade, then turn them loose in public school. It might take them 2 years to adjust, but then they'll be fine.
How do you know that they don't have social skills? Do you know them personally? You are simply assuming that because they are so good at one thing, they must necessarily suck at others. This is simply stereotyping people. I can show you many guys in India who excel at sports, excel in studies, are good orators, are involved in many extracurricular activities, and also manage to get decent girlfriends!!
