To understand the term burning bridges:

Image your'e standing on an island, around you, you have many island, each representing the connections you have in your life (with people etc.).

To connect you with all these people you have to build brigdes (relationships etc.).

If you burn these bridges you will not have anyone around you. You will stand alone.

it means that when you do something so outrageous you can never go back because you burned that "bridge". for me, i got kicked out of a recreational class because i did something wrong. i brought a dead squirrel into the school and offered it to my principal as a peace offering. burned that bridge in that class. so i can't go back into it.

@Jenoevian burning bridges means to cut your ties with someone.. to like destroy what you have with a person whether its family a friend or lover its to cut them out of you life.. burning the bridge .. you cannot walk across a bridge thats gone.. you cannot expect to be close to someone if there is no longer anything there.. O.o if that makes sense lol
