Perhaps in the original script and that might have been its original use but in the film it was called a "towing vehichle". Starships are the names of the spacecrafts in Star Trek to my knowledge.
Further research from me shows that the Nostromo was originally a starship but refitted to become a "commercial towing vehichle" in 2116. Alien takes place in 2121.
Quote DIRECTLY from the movie:"This is COMMERCIAL TOWING VEHICHLE Nostromo out of the Solomons. Registration number 180924609."
Sounds like the script writer forgot what he originally had called it. Not to mention "starship" sounds a lot better than "commercial towing vechicle". However the Nostromo was nothing more than a huge "space-barge" towing a huge refinery. In ship terms it wasn't a cruise ship, neither a research or military ship. The job it was doing was very unglamorous and filthy. It's not even a container ship.
I wouldn't call the Nostromo a starship as little as I would call an oiltanker an "ocean liner"

Nice. I like it. To be somewhat picky I might add the Nostromo was no starship but a commercial towing vehichle (towing a refinery).

Watch the end of the movie.
Quote DIRECTLY from the 1st and 3rd movie: "This is Ripley, last survivor of the commercial starship Nostromo."
