Man, I am so sorry. Not going for one-upmanship here, hope you can believe me. My husband and I prayed for 11 years on me because of where I was. It's only been the last couple of months things have changed. It was awful and lonely.
No, sorry that you didn't get the points you wanted. But also sorry that it sounds like somebody failed you. Probably/maybe more than one. Sorry that this really isn't a venue that where I can be helpful to you--not really. But I do have a crowd of people that I haven't given up on. I don't believe in giving up on people. You've joined that list. So that's where my energy goes. That's why I will only respond to more intelligent banter. Luck to you!
God failed me, in case you're wondering. I prayed for three years for help to get past my doubts (which started on my mission, grew while I was at BYU and mushroomed as I read the scriptures with greater education).
I'm a slow learner, but eventually I realized that the persistent silence I was hearing when I prayed was a very powerful answer indeed.
The subject of the conversation between the teen and the parents shouldn't be about whether to go to church or not. The real subject is the teen's lack of a testimony. Promising to pray AFTER making a final decision isn't what we are taught. We are taught to study it out and then pray for confirmation. If the teen prayed and didn't get an answer, that would be another topic of conversation. We are in the middle of figuring out to allow teens appropriate agency. There isn't one right answer.
If the teen attended church regularly from birth and studied the scriptures with his/her family like most faithful Mormons do, he/she "studied it out" and prayed for *years*. This gave him/her ample opportunity to build a testimony that never should have crumbled.
The trouble (for the church) is, as people get older, they learn to reason with greater complexity. We stereotype teens as 100% naive, but teens routinely identify some genuine problems in their parents' teachings.
As a teenager who no longer believes in the LDS religion, I really appreciate this video. I personally believe that, as a teenager, I am able to make decisions for my own life now. I don't want to live the way my family expects me to when I don't think it's right. Anyone who says that a parent who lets their teen leave the church is just stereotyping teenagers as irresponsible or thoughtless, and that's wrong. Belief is very personal, and should not be dictated by others.
If a kid who wants to quit the church has such an easy conversation, I'm glad for them!
I was dragged to church until I disrupted the class and responded with every group question with answers like "No; because God isn't real" and "My testimony is that there is no God and Joseph Smith was a liar" until they pretty much said I could stay at home :) Not sure whether the fact that my fathers in the Bishopric helped or not LOL
I was Mormon too. I realised by searching, that it's doctrines where false: This led me to research the bible as well as other faiths holy books too. Now I'm an atheist.
i wish i had this as a teenager. i was in my 20's when i was brave enough to leave what i realized was a lie. the interent provides so many great additional support sites for leaving the mormon church - goodle other ex mormon sites. it get's better. trust me, getting out of the church now is the best thing you can possibly do. but whatever you do, don't leave the mormon cult just to jump into some jesus-saves cult -it is no different.
Thanks for your post. Have you posted the story of your exodus from the church online somewhere? With so many Mormon missionaries out there trying to recruit new tithe payers (and struggling to do so, thank goodness), Ex-Mormons can do the world much good by publicly discussing their reasons for leaving the church.
“But even if we or an angel from heaven (moroni) should preach to you a gospel other than what we have preached to you, curse be on him!” Galatians 1:6-9 Mormon’s are not prepared for the coming apocalypse, Huge Sorrow will be to the mormon who refuse to see the truth, You have been warned your fall will be great. Read the BIBLE ONLY!
I quit the mormon church a couple of months ago when i realised how confusing the teachings were, i have been told that even if i dont attend any more, am still regarded as a member, i dont want that so i have to write a letter to tghe bishop to ask my name to be taken off the records, but dont know how to start
u know how hard it is t quit church?!!! i aint an LSD what ever that is i m christian. a verrrrrry strick type excspecially for girls. its hard to quit something you ve been in your whole life.
LOL!!! This is pretty damn funny!!! I know whoever made this power point presentation was trying to be serious, especially given the dramatic music in the background, but believe me. There is so much more to quititing the church than this. Plus, it's also funny that the child was talking to the mother and not the father. Sounds to me like whoever made this video is afraid of his/her father.
I'm referring to the narrative of the child in the video.
Am I making fun of Joseph Smith? No. I recognise that I was being general, as that was my intent. My fault for not qualifying my statement more fully. I guess I was wrong in assuming that the context of the statement would clarify my intent.
@iqlusionblogspot - the Lord saw fit to call others in their teens as well. Mormon was 15 when he heard the voice of the Lord. Jacob, the son of Lehi... Samuel in the Old Testament. Young men of faith receive answers... visions... callings to be prophets. The godless and faithless amongst us wander in a stupor of thought following after their pleasures. Words like this provide comfort for the man or woman who wishes to consume his life upon his lusts and carnal desires.
@iqlusionblogspot lol, good point!! I always am amazed that people will believe what some 14 year old boy had to say. Who practiced the occult and was known for telling elaborate and believable stories of fiction, about history and culture, long before the BOM. Who was caught in the middle of a society where many were trying to establish a name in religion. Satan is really tricky is his use of Joe. J.S. was the perfect catalyst of this great deception. Jo obviously did not know scripture.
@Perykvaal - It doesn't matter if someone is 18 or 80... behavior as a teenager is possible from ANY of God's children. Satan, the oldest of all pre-mortal beings, continues to rant and rage over God's decision to cast him off.
@Perykvaal I think that you should because if your faith is as strong as it claims to be you can get him (the teen that quit) back to the church of course your not but you guys say you can.
@Perykvaal I think that you should because if your faith is as strong as it claims to be, you can get him (the teen that quit) back to the church of course your not but you guys say you can.

I am mormon and dont like being one there really pushy and annoying and always trying to get you to do dum activities.
@JohnRhysMusician I think this is great! Around the age of 14, I started to wonder if it was all bullshit, but I had to keep going. Such a waste of time. Those are precious years of my life that I had absolute nonsense drilled into my head. Why? The religious teaching false realities to their kids is absolutely child abuse. I say, if you want to go play dress up with your adult friends and live your life as a play, have at it; but, you have no right to confuse children with religion.
@AlienTruth - It looks like you've taken complete control over your life. Congrats. You have found your life. You do what none possibly ever dream of doing. And life is meant to have some fun... guilt free fun.
This is excellent dialogue. Unfortunately, a lot of parents won't listen to their teens and will actually force them to go. Like mine did. Parents will often do things for appearances sake. Here is my vid on resigning from the MORmON cult:

LDS parents who force their kids to go to Church deny the faith, and the natural consequence is rebellion.

Mormon is a fictional character. One of the characters in Joseph Smith's fictional work "The Book of Mormon"
One of the many weird things that have happened in America :D
