I am glad I didn't buy Comanche Overkill, and instead got the 2.0 version that added better voxols, reflections and various multiplay options. If I had bought the first Comanche, I would have felt cheated!
@busrel I didn't have that problem, but if you do, you can bring down the cycles in DOSBox by pressing CTRL-F11 repeatedly until the game reaches an acceptable speed.
WOW! That is AMAZING!...... I remember playing Gunship, and then learned about he comanchee games and gave like a later one a try.. love those days...
Hooray for voxels! This and Magic Carpet looked amazing for the time given the use of voxels for landscapes. But it wasn't too much longer after these came out that dedicated 3D graphics cards came out that allowed for faster processing of 3D terrain using triangle meshes, spelling the end for voxel terrain. I wonder what could be achieved using meshes combined with high density voxel terrains with the equipment that exists nowadays...?
@drvoke Look up Treadmarks for a great indie game from several years ago that did something like this. I can only imagine what cards these days could do with a similar engine.
@drvoke Search for "Unlimited Detail" it runs in software. For a comparission, Crysis on Very high 1 runs at about 5-10 fps in software, if you're using one of the best CPU's. And yes dx 11 can be run in software mode
I had this game. It was the big hit at the time because it used a new graphical technique called 'Garaud Shading'. I remember having to clear some of my HDD at the time because it was a whopping 60MB installation! (which was HUGE back then)
i love it when a mission starts with "the enemy is on vacation"! I remember playing this in 93 when my dad took us computer shopping for the first time.
I remember back in those days these game was like Crysis in 2007. Only the absolute best PC could run it in full specs but in 1992 with no internet it was harder to have a great PC running and these game as kind of like an elitist game.
Great blend of arcade action with a tad bit of simulation/tactics thrown in. Calling airstrikes to clear canyons of anti-air tanks while defending with Stingers against KA-50s was awesome, all with digital samples, speech and a great midi soundtrack for that extra bit of atmosphere. I love this game!
@Qbopper Yup - today's it's all about graphics and gameplay that 12 years can handle! That's why, in terms of number gamers playing, retro PC gaming is actually the largest genre, even though you don't see anything about retro PC gaming in major gaming websites like Gamespot and IGN, etc, because they are there to help the game companies make money, not gamers news about older games that cannot make money for the games companies!
I remember when this came out. Everyone was going crazy over the voxel spacing graphics and for good reason because they looked the bomb, it was the nail in the coffin for the Amiga fanboys who said "PC's will never get better than amigas because they are business machine". Voxel spacing baby put that in your blitter chip and smoke on it!!!
This was the most lifelike Helicopter Actionsimulation back then, compare it to vector games like Thunderhawk or Gunship 2000... this was like a small revolution. I wanted a PC back then just for this game and Wingcommander (but stuck with my trustworthy amiga for another 7 years or so ;) ).
This was a truly amazing game, the graphics were astounding considering how early it was. They still look pretty damn good considering it's almost 20 years old and ran on machines less than a thousandth of what we have today.
I tried installing this on my windows 7 OS, but it doesn't work. I just wanted to see what it looked like again, thanks for posting this, brings back some good memories :)
I remember SimCopter and the way it allowed you to fly over cities generated in SimCity. I know some people didn't like it because it was too simplistic and repetitive, and in some ways it was, but it was still a lot of fun for a while.
@fisk0 the water reflection could be turned on or off, it was a cpu killer tho, even on a 486/33mhz with 8mb of ram (incredible machine in 1992) it would make the game crawl. The 486 50 or 66 was really needed, but they weren't yet available when I played this.
Gotta remember this was all done with CPU, there were no 3D cards available for PC's until a few years later.
This has got to be one of the best looking engines in the early 90's. Those voxel graphics still look a lot better than most of the early 3D accelerated games from 1997-2001.
I have seen screenshots of this game with some extremely good looking water reflections too (the kind that games usually didn't have until 2003 or something), but couldn't see any of that in this video. Anybody knows anything more about that?
It's a 1992 combat flight simulator, with one of the most advanced voxel graphics engines at the time. there's a lot of info on it in the video description, and probably mobygames and wikipedia as well.
Whoa, i remember playing through that one, i think i'll dust it off right now! Thanks for the vid, and giving us a bit of the historical background!:)
NovaLogic did the good job! I still remember this game, as well as Comanche 3, Armored Fist, and of course the Delta Force series. I thought the company no longer exists, but they still do and develop new Delta Force game. Maybe there is still hope for Comanche 5 and Armored Fist 4?
when this game came out, my friend and i thought the graphics were fcking mind blowing (which they were for the time). the music is so nostalgic. thnx for posting this video
Holy crap this brings back memories. I used to play this game all the time.
Then I got an AMD 266MHz system, and since this game uses the clock for it's speed limiter, it was impossible to play. The missions would last one or two seconds because you'd die immediately.
Ya, I just want the demo because I wanna record a video. The demo would have only a few missions. So I would be able to finish the game on YouuTube. But when I search abandonware sites, all I get is old pirated copies.
@LateBlt Which is what made the Commodore Amiga so revolutionary when it was released in 1985 with 4 channel stereo sound :). This was a great game for the PC though, the 80's and 90's were such a great time for gaming, innovation and technology :)
awsome!!! man i still dont get how they got those grafics back then.. and worked fine in pretty much every pc back then.. though i was more of a LHX guy heheh great memorys... i was 6 years old back then
wow. used to play Comanche 3, and thought the graphics were bloody awesome for a DOS game. now I see where C3's roots were at. add some "destroyable" trees, some more sprites, higher resolutions.. and there you have it, it's C3 in disguise. =)
and I thought *my* little favorite sim was somewhat old and outdated.
The voxel rendering was absolutely incredible back when this game came out ('90?). What a great game. It's really disappointing that we can't get some new Heli sims.
It may be that you just need to turn up the cycles on DOSBox... By default it only runs at 3,000 cycles, which is probably too low for a 1997 game like Comanche 3. One report on the DOSBox website suggests 39,000 cycles, more than 10 times the default. You might also want to try fiddling with DOSBox settings (like software rendering vs. OpenGL/DirectDraw). If that still doesn't work, you might just need a faster CPU.
This is one of my favourite action/sims from back in the day, and it's graphics were lightyears ahead of what was otherwise available. I'm glad to hear that voxel technology isn't dead though, since some folks have mentioned Crysis using it. Hooray Novalogic!
It is the special famous high-tech buzzer which makes the oil tanks blow up if they make a wrong guess on the game show. Too bad the Comanche got cancelled, so the world will never see such power unleashed for practical purposes. :)
Now you mention it, Crysis uses a voxel engine for the terrain too, that's why there's such a long view distance. It's a lot more advanced than this game's, obviously, but shows that voxels aren't dead yet!
You're comparing two TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAMES because the other one is newer/has better graphics? you sir are complete idiot. Of course Crysis has better graphics, but how can you say its better game if you haven't even tried it?
Say.. which one is better? 10-year-old helicopter or a brand new car? You can't compare the two!
I remember seeing pictures of this in PC Gamer magazine or something like that in the start of the 90s. The graphics in those shots were just so freaking stunning. This truely was an amazing experience back in the day. Really brings back memories :) Wish games started using voxels again. Would be cool to see how far they could push it today.
Aaaah this was my favourite game when I was a child...I played ALWAYS this mission, because I was afraid about the others, here there were not enemies XD LOL!
Thanks! :D Glad you like it. One of the great things about YouTube is how it allows people to experience games that they never got to play, and might not be able to play because of technology/skill limitations. Too bad I'm only good enough at Comanche for this one mission!
This is hands down my favorite game of all time... I was like six years old when I played it... Me and my dad played through all the missions. it was great... I remember that reading the mission briefings was the main reason I worked at reading...
aahhh, maaaan, I played Comanche for hundreds of hours, and with every new version I had to update my rig, that voxelspace thingy eats your CPU alive, but it was fun all the time. too bad it didn't make serial production IRL
omg...such memories...My father got this for me when he was working on the Comanche. I also have a dummy bullet and medals for it. omg...I used to play this ALL the time!
I can't find my copy of this game (it's been about 15 years after all), but you guys claim its abandonware? Where can I find a copy of it for download?
This game was the main reason people buyed 386 and 486 machines replacing the old 286 scubs (386 was min.) ... and think the first one on PC using real 3D textured polygons ...
Found a patch to make it work in win95/98 if you have it on your PC still (I do, I have a dual 98 and XP PC, first for my retro games, second for my modern games!) Also seems to clean the text up a bit and make it smoother in DOSBox too! :)
To get it, go to the 3DGamers website and search the site for cmom3h.exe
Got it working - thanks for the info! Great action helicopter game. Seems to look at bit better in your movie than on my PC screen, but other than that all's fine and I am enjoying this classic! :)
The NovaLogic logo is AdLib music I think, and the sound that comes right after it is digitized sound, so this mostly likely is a problem with your audio settings. Try changing dosbox.conf to have a regular Sound Blaster (dosbox.conf calls this "sb1") with the usual settings of I/O address 220h, IRQ7, and DMA1.
It's not hard to find C:MO online, I think it counts as abandonware now. Although you could likely find it on eBay for cheap, given how many sequels there were.
I remember having to create a boot disk on my pc to run it. 640kb was a pain...

Nah, it's okay. ;)

For a 1992 game, this looks excellent!

haha gun sounds like buzzer xD
macxthegamer 4 years ago
It is the special famous high-tech buzzer which makes the oil tanks blow up if they make a wrong guess on the game show. Too bad the Comanche got cancelled, so the world will never see such power unleashed for practical purposes. :)

I don't know..I think crysis might be just a bit better..LOL!
oafaloaf 4 years ago
Crysis is good too. As with any art, there's no "better" or "worse". It's all in the eye of the beholder.
LateBlt 4 years ago
Now you mention it, Crysis uses a voxel engine for the terrain too, that's why there's such a long view distance. It's a lot more advanced than this game's, obviously, but shows that voxels aren't dead yet!
Dani128 4 years ago
You're comparing two TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAMES because the other one is newer/has better graphics? you sir are complete idiot. Of course Crysis has better graphics, but how can you say its better game if you haven't even tried it?
Say.. which one is better? 10-year-old helicopter or a brand new car? You can't compare the two!
Tuze 4 years ago
uh.. ignore the -if you haven't even tried it?- part.. writing mistake

Thanks, LateBlt. This vid is perfect. I've been wanting to see this game since I heard about it over ten years ago.
Erudecorp 4 years ago
Thanks! :D Glad you like it. One of the great things about YouTube is how it allows people to experience games that they never got to play, and might not be able to play because of technology/skill limitations. Too bad I'm only good enough at Comanche for this one mission!
LateBlt 4 years ago
Good old Comanche. I still got original CD.

This is hands down my favorite game of all time... I was like six years old when I played it... Me and my dad played through all the missions. it was great... I remember that reading the mission briefings was the main reason I worked at reading...
chukmaty 4 years ago
aahhh, maaaan, I played Comanche for hundreds of hours, and with every new version I had to update my rig, that voxelspace thingy eats your CPU alive, but it was fun all the time. too bad it didn't make serial production IRL

I can't find my copy of this game (it's been about 15 years after all), but you guys claim its abandonware? Where can I find a copy of it for download?
dopefish3600 4 years ago
it is processor based... so even if you find a copy you would have to have a stone age processor to play it.
chukmaty 4 years ago
UH, memories ...
This game was the main reason people buyed 386 and 486 machines replacing the old 286 scubs (386 was min.) ... and think the first one on PC using real 3D textured polygons ...
cybercow222 4 years ago
Found a patch to make it work in win95/98 if you have it on your PC still (I do, I have a dual 98 and XP PC, first for my retro games, second for my modern games!) Also seems to clean the text up a bit and make it smoother in DOSBox too! :)
To get it, go to the 3DGamers website and search the site for cmom3h.exe

Got it working - thanks for the info! Great action helicopter game. Seems to look at bit better in your movie than on my PC screen, but other than that all's fine and I am enjoying this classic! :)
UKJohnUK 4 years ago
what settings did you use in dosbox? I have DOSBox 0.65 crashing right after the Novalogic label with fanfare sound. :(
UKJohnUK 4 years ago
The NovaLogic logo is AdLib music I think, and the sound that comes right after it is digitized sound, so this mostly likely is a problem with your audio settings. Try changing dosbox.conf to have a regular Sound Blaster (dosbox.conf calls this "sb1") with the usual settings of I/O address 220h, IRQ7, and DMA1.

eggbert1963 4 years ago
It's not hard to find C:MO online, I think it counts as abandonware now. Although you could likely find it on eBay for cheap, given how many sequels there were.
