its funny that they say a whippet is the Ferrari of the dog world. That's the exact same thing another "expert" said about greyhounds on Animal Planet.

Whippets aren't as quick as Greyhounds, but they can carry their top speed for a far greater distance than the Greyhound. A Greyhound will only be able to keep its top speed up for 200-300 metres. The Whippet with its superior stamina will be able to carry that top speed over a greater distance.

@RobbieReineldt no, greyhounds dont have one big burst of energy. and no whippets cannot go father if you were to race them, the greyhound would win! greyhounds have plenty of stamina and pure speed. poor whippet cant stand a chance!

@GreyhoundLover12 Greyhounds don't have plenty of stamina, they have sharp bursts. Greyhounds are extremely prone to acidosis. If you knew as much as you say about Greyhounds you'd know of this condition. Whippets do not suffer form this condition commonly because they have better endurance.

@RobbieReineldt what i am saying is whippets of cour would not stand a chance against greyhounds. what i am also saying is greyhounds dont have plenty of stamina (my mistake), they can go for jogs and stay running with you. so basicly, they have stamina, just when they run there not running full speed. whippets have stamina, only a smudge more than greyhounds, because the two breeds are ''cousins''.

There's no such thing as a long-haired whippet. There used to be a wire-coated variant of the breed, but smooth coats were selected for in breeding programs, resulting in the wire-coat gene to be lost (recessive). There is a fairly new breed called Silken Windhound that was created from mixing whippets, borzoi and shelties.

greyhounds are 'greyt' if you have the space - a house, a nice yard, and the money to care for a larger dog. The whippet is great if you live in an apartment or in the city. Whippets are only SLIGHTLY more calm than retired racers, but that depends on your socialization. They're very adaptable to almost any space and family size, whereas retired racers benefit from a more conscientious owner.

how much do these dogs weight.? the vet and the rescue people said my dog is an italian greyhound, but he is about 22 lbs! Wikipedia says the whippet is from 15-25 lbs.

My dog has the italian greyhound "stop" between nose to forehead,not the straight terrier nose look of a whippet but he is so BIG, so i'm not sure.

Some of my parents friends have Whippets, they're very friendly! One time on of them got loose at night and I was getting ready to leave and then it came up to me wagging his tail with this look that just said "HI THERE!" Haha they also get along pretty well with our Italian Greyhound.

My nan has 3 whippets, they are awesome!:D and they had a cat (she has died now) and they were fine with the cat. Now my nan and granddad live with my auntie uncle cousins ect. and they have a cat as well. Only one of the whippets (willow) will chase after the cat. So if you get a whippet whilst it is young and you have a cat, make sure they see enough of each other and they will get used to being around each other and they will be OK when the dog is fully grown :)

I personally believe that greyhounds are actually the furaries(sorry I'm not a good speller) of the dog world. Greyhounds are prettier, faster, and just cooler than a whippet. A whippet is just a greyhound wanna-be!!

Whippets are also prey orientated, so don't expect them to come running back to you when they're off lead and have a cat or squirrel in sight. They also have literally no traffic sense

I have a whippet and 2 cats next door. They sunbath in the front garden together all the time. It's squirrels he likes to catch.. and does, though he lets them go on command without hurting them. I also had a mouse which used to get out of it's exploring ball and snuggle up next to him near the fire. Trained early, a lot of the 'common' issues like them killing small animals can be controlled.
