Automatic Baby was briefly formed by members of the bands U2 and R.E.M.. It was conformed by Mike Mills (guitar), Michael Stipe (vocals); both from R.E.M.; and Larry Mullen Jr. (bongos), and Adam Clayton (Bass Guitar) from U2. The band's only performance was an acoustic version of One during a MTV concert for president Clinton. Both bands were friends since 1984, especially Stipe and Bono. -- wikipedia
seriously. i am no huge fan of REM and i am a massively loyal U2 fan, but this melody serves Michael Stipe's plaintive voice so much more than Bono's. The raw energy of Stipe's voice, paired the acoustic performance, really brings out the hidden power of this song, and it never ceases to give me chills. i thought it was cool to see Mills back Stipe vocally the way Edge would have backed Bono.
That ISN'T R.E.M. - It's Mike Mills & Michael Stipe from R.E.M. sure enough. But look closely. Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen from U2 on the rhytmn section. This supergroup called themselves "Automatic Baby" for obvious reasons.
bono is great, but stipe makes the song more powerful. Wonderful.

The group is actually referred to as "Automatic Baby" after REM's "Automatic for the People" and U2's "Achtung Baby"
