I like how only some victims of hate-based violence are real victims. I am glad that if a non-minority or non-special rights person is killed or beaten, they are not a real victim (even if there are racial slurs hurled against them). We should let politicians determine more things. Or, we could outsource them to Greece for a few years.

I am more shocked that comments are allowed for this post than the ignorant thing that the Representative stated. So, if there is a crime against a person that has not been given "special status", there is no way there can be a hate crime. If there is a special status given to a group by the government, they are treated differently than a normal citizen. Well, some people are "more equal" than others. Litigation is the best way to eradicate racism. Sure, also more taxes help the economy.

For those who wish to draw their comparisons between Vietnam and modern times, well Congress is ushering an enviornment to allow the treatment of servicement and women to reflect that of the Vietnam era.

Before you start calling people morons, get your facts correct. The Hate Crimes Bill is not giving gay people a higher status, it is simply adding sexual orientation to the list of classifications that currently stand for bias-motivated crimes like race, religion, disability, etc. Sexual orientation is not on that list and it should be to protect those who commit hate-based crimes against gay people and even straight people should that happen.

A hate crime is not just beating anybody up. It is going after a person specifically because they are gay, African-American, handicapped, etc. There is a difference. You can go after someone with no motivation or you can go after them for their orientation, race, religion because you have a problem with it...that is what a hate-crime is.

No one is saying you cannot hate whoever you want. You just cannot act on it. That is the point of a hate-crimes law. If you act on your hate and hurt someone because of it, then it is a hate crime and such nasty crimes should be prosecuted differently.

The problem with hate crimes bills is that a crime in and of itself is a hate crime, and the culpable mental state of the person should have no bearing on their punishment, barring exceptions like the insanity defense or in cases involving mentally retarded assailants. The culpable mental state is only to be used to shorten sentences or for reprieve from a sentence, not to extend it. The inevitable injustice isthe whitepeople everyday who are victims to blacks, but it'snotprosecutedas hatecrime.
