It''s funny how a professional in some other line of work can have a bad day...but not a musician? Babe Ruth is at the top of the list in strike outs, but still is recoginzed as one of the greatest.
Lots of hate in these comments...Do you all feel better after saying these things about Nick? What's the point? I'd honestly like to know. If it's just to spread hate..then why?
Oh yeah, and why don't you spend the time it took you cats to post jive ass remarks on this and other of Nick's videos and practice your damn horns? Or learn from some of the amazing vocabulary and phrasing on this and all other of Nick's videos? All you little sophomoric wannabe jazz captains over at wherever the hell CMU is need to shut your mouths and shed, not sit on YouTube and talk shit about someone who sounds better now than you probably ever will.
I guess katiexxmusic and ksyalxe have nothing better to do then to post the same comment on every one of Mr. Payton's Youtube sites. Everyone has a bad day once in a while. Illness can be out of one's control. It's pretty sad to attribute one bad day to drugs without knowing the facts. You both need to get a life. It must have taken alot of time to post these remarks on every one of his youtube pages. lol
lemme just say, that the CMU jazz lab 1 was fanfreakintastic. you guys were sooo good. But I was disappointed with Nick. I came in with a notion that he was going to blow me away, and that he did. But not in the best of ways. So thank you Jazz Lab 1 for your hard wwork, you blew me away instantly. Hope to see you in the future
When we rehearsed with him, he sounded like he does in this video, absolutely amazing, great...But during the friday night performance it was completely the opposite. It was embarassing and made our hard work seem like a joke.
I hope our big band was more of an inspiration to all the high school students than he was.
@katiexxmusic And I'm sure you were sounding like Freddie Hubbard that night? Please!!!!! Everyone has on and off nights, from a college jazz captain like yourself to a legend like Miles Davis. Please take your jive ass comments off this video. Is this a video of you little college big band concert? No, it's not--this video is completely unrelated to the gig you're talking about so please refrain from leaving comments of this nature of this and other videos of Mr. Payton.
I was not performing that night, I am not involved with the jazz program at CMU. I was in attendance hoping to see some great jazz because I had heard great recordings by Nick Payton prior to this night. However, his performance was in fact completely horrible, and everyone was very angry about his complete disrespect to the audience of young high school musicians. He showed up to the performance high and/or drunk and played terribly.
This is my opinion and I will post it wherever I please, just as you have posted yours. Also, you're right. This video is not of his performance at CMU. I think I will post a video of that night so others can see what we are talking about.
What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?
dude you're posting the exact same comment at every single video. at least type. i bet nicholas payton could copy and paste better than you. even high.
For my taste Woody N You is a much hipper song with really beautiful harmony and Nick plays with so much understated taste that's its beyond most, grasp.
Am I the only one that hears a Woody Shaw sound in this great man?

I just saw him the other night, he was amazing, but I had to sit through a bunch of terrible warmup acts.

This is an incredible solo. Is there a live recording of the whole track/concert? Also, since when did the Airmen have a percussionist?

for my personal taste, I am liking this solo better than "Woody N' you". it just grooves and he's got some killer lines....as always
