There are instances in shallow river systems where you cannot get off plane until you reach your spot...or you get stuck off plane for miles. I assume Gerald felt he had to stay up and run it. In some states, that high speed pass less than 100 ft of another boat would bring least a large ticket, and possibly more.
I have fished tournaments, and have also been a recreational fisherman while tournaments are going on. There is 0 excuse for the extremely unsafe action of that driver. The other fishermen were visible a sufficient distance to have slowed LONG before it would have become a swamping/wake issue.
