I am a muslim women and trust me in the Koran, it is said beating should only be done with the purest intentions to not hurt, it should not leave a mark, no pain that will be unbearable. It should purely be used as a warning by the husband so that the woman do not commit a sin and to reduce her punishment in the after life for her sins.
So, even the slightest motive to hurt the women is present the man have sinned and will be punished. Unfortunately, often it is done for the wrong reasons.
