This is one of the most over rated movie on the history of Hollywood.
I find it personally disconcerting that a movie that I find so flat, bland, and maybe even a little sleazy is loved by so many. Honestly, I want to know(!), what do people see in this movie that they connect with on a personal level, or is it just entertainment, whatever that means. well I think the movie is educational, just the name Avatar can teach some thing, in here especialy i liked they emphesised on NADI, VIBRATION, human self realisation, all are part of the hindu KUNDALINI i.e about the equilibrium of human body, l dont want to go deep into it. I would say this is an easy way to curb the modern sociaty to understand the myth of human intelect, power, peace.

The avatar system has been done before in a novel called Call Me Joe. It centered around a paraplegic man telepathically linked to an artificially created creature in order to explore a harsh planet. Sounds familiar doesn't it?
I'm truly upset that you didn't like it, Chris. :-\ And I have no points to argue that haven't already been made. Just personally, I walked in there knowing nothing about the plot, and I loved it. (I never succumb to hype anymore. It's a bad habbit that leaves you disappointed.)
Where we come to a disagreement, I suppose, is when you say you feel like this was a retelling of a familiar story, but wasn't done WELL. I agree it's a familiar story, but I think it was done outstandingly.
It's a film based on universal themes. I don't think that makes it unoriginal.
I thought it was very original with the bio luminescent life, hints of evolution here and there, the idea of an entire world networked like that and the Na'vi's ability to jack into the system with their nerve endings was very original. The avatar system was pretty original. The idea that the humans were the technologically advanced race invading and destroying primitive aliens was a nice change of pace.

To reiterate, I never said the movie's theme was unoriginal. Theme cannot be unoriginal, theme will always be repeated. HOWEVER, I still feel the overall execution was unoriginal.
For example: Crazy Heart has been compared to The Wrestler. Yes, thematically, it's a very similar story but it's the execution that was brilliant and made it so good. See both of them if you haven't.
Also, I liked the creature work, however, there WERE actually flaws there too. There was an evolutionary inconsistency. The entire animal kingdom of Pandora was based on a six-legged format, much like our four legged.
This made sense, given the way the creatures were built, but it didn't make sense that the Navi only had 4 limbs and not even a hint of lost arms or legs, when even the other primates were shown with extra extremities.
I know I'm being picky but, it is true.
Also, overall, no matter how cool the world they created was, the acting was mediocre at best. And if we don't have strong, believable acting to bring the world to life and drive the message home, all is lost.

I won't go crazy on you like other people would, but I will say that I understand what you're saying. However, I thought it was an interesting experience, I had no problem with the regurgitated story for the simple fact that its an important kind of message that needs to be thrown in people's faces. The love story was silly but I guess they wanted extra fluff...oh well, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. Perhaps the next movie, Sherlock Holmes, eh maybe....haha.

Ok I'm gonna comment on some of your points. You're right that the story is lacking but I didn't think it was nearly as lacking as you were saying. And you're right that it's 2009 and movies need to look good. Up looked good, A Christmas Carol looked great, Avatar was groundbreaking. Like it's phenomenal. I think we just critique movies differently. You lean towards the story. My philosophy is if it was entertaining then I like it. The visuals alone were extremely entertaining.
I have just realized this: there is a movie called "Avatar" - out now obviously - and there is a movie in productoin/completed called "The Last Airbender".
Yeah, I actually thought that's what this was when I first read about it. I hope The Last Airbender is better than this...and for that matter, better than the last couple of movies that Shamalan directed.
@ChrisPalmieri Shyamalan is a much better director than he is a writer. When he does too much on too many movies, they start to suck something awful. I'm hoping that since most of the source material is already written, Shyamalan can't really screw up the storyline.

Well, I've only just started doing movie reviews so, perhaps I will find more originality in it over time. I can say with confidence though that my work as a film maker, actor and writer are as original as possible.

definitely not going to see this :P Sounds ignorant, but even from the trailer I could tell that it was gonna be crap. For some reason, I think its only a movie that little-ish kids could enjoy. The plot (like you said) has been done thousands of times before, and it doesn't go deep into any subject and make you think at all. The avatar system has been done before in a novel called Call Me Joe. It centered around a paraplegic man telepathically linked to an artificially created creature in order to explore a harsh planet. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

I'm truly upset that you didn't like it, Chris. :-\ And I have no points to argue that haven't already been made. Just personally, I walked in there knowing nothing about the plot, and I loved it. (I never succumb to hype anymore. It's a bad habbit that leaves you disappointed.)
Where we come to a disagreement, I suppose, is when you say you feel like this was a retelling of a familiar story, but wasn't done WELL. I agree it's a familiar story, but I think it was done outstandingly.

I saw it in 3D the effects were great but the story line absolutely sucked! Everyone should've just died! it would've been a happier ending.

It's a film based on universal themes. I don't think that makes it unoriginal.
I thought it was very original with the bio luminescent life, hints of evolution here and there, the idea of an entire world networked like that and the Na'vi's ability to jack into the system with their nerve endings was very original. The avatar system was pretty original. The idea that the humans were the technologically advanced race invading and destroying primitive aliens was a nice change of pace.

To reiterate, I never said the movie's theme was unoriginal. Theme cannot be unoriginal, theme will always be repeated. HOWEVER, I still feel the overall execution was unoriginal.

For example: Crazy Heart has been compared to The Wrestler. Yes, thematically, it's a very similar story but it's the execution that was brilliant and made it so good. See both of them if you haven't.
Also, I liked the creature work, however, there WERE actually flaws there too. There was an evolutionary inconsistency. The entire animal kingdom of Pandora was based on a six-legged format, much like our four legged.

This made sense, given the way the creatures were built, but it didn't make sense that the Navi only had 4 limbs and not even a hint of lost arms or legs, when even the other primates were shown with extra extremities.
I know I'm being picky but, it is true.
Also, overall, no matter how cool the world they created was, the acting was mediocre at best. And if we don't have strong, believable acting to bring the world to life and drive the message home, all is lost.

I won't go crazy on you like other people would, but I will say that I understand what you're saying. However, I thought it was an interesting experience, I had no problem with the regurgitated story for the simple fact that its an important kind of message that needs to be thrown in people's faces. The love story was silly but I guess they wanted extra fluff...oh well, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. Perhaps the next movie, Sherlock Holmes, eh maybe....haha.

Ok I'm gonna comment on some of your points. You're right that the story is lacking but I didn't think it was nearly as lacking as you were saying. And you're right that it's 2009 and movies need to look good. Up looked good, A Christmas Carol looked great, Avatar was groundbreaking. Like it's phenomenal. I think we just critique movies differently. You lean towards the story. My philosophy is if it was entertaining then I like it. The visuals alone were extremely entertaining.

@ChrisPalmieri Shyamalan is a much better director than he is a writer. When he does too much on too many movies, they start to suck something awful. I'm hoping that since most of the source material is already written, Shyamalan can't really screw up the storyline.

1) Never said my work was like Cameron's, just said maybe if he didn't like reviews, he's like my films.
2) I was just paraphrasing with rhinos, I didn't mean the first ten minutes of the movie, I meant the first ten minutes of the part with the rhinos. If you don't believe I saw the film I'll show you the fucking ticket.
3) My sideburns have nothing to do with either the movie, or my opinions on it.

lol... i liked it... i thought it might egg on more earth green movies just like how star wars really started off the whole sci fi trend... i loved the background... the director took most of the background from his love of the undersea world... like the whole coral reef thing... i thought the whole 'mating' thing was weird... she's blue and 10 feet tall... that's just weird... but other than that i liked it XD

Well, I've only just started doing movie reviews so, perhaps I will find more originality in it over time. I can say with confidence though that my work as a film maker, actor and writer are as original as possible.
Also, Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves and all of those other movies were actually good.
That was my point: It's okay to repeat story, but you need to do it well. This wasn't done well.

Well glad you took that to heart, I hope you find your niche and maybe a cool catch phrase something that can be hard these days to come up with, and not be called a copy cat.
And keep this in mind, no matter what your Opinion is on a movie, someone is going to disagree and probably voice it. And remember have fun, Even make fun of a movie you liked. Cause a funny Review is always more interesting to watch, in fact because of that, I love watching/reading bad reviews more than good ones.

definitely not going to see this :P Sounds ignorant, but even from the trailer I could tell that it was gonna be crap. For some reason, I think its only a movie that little-ish kids could enjoy. The plot (like you said) has been done thousands of times before, and it doesn't go deep into any subject and make you think at all. It just looks bad, and as from this review I can tell that it most likely will be bad, thus resulting in me not going to see it :)
