  • The beautiful thing about being with someone of the same gender for 23 years is that you learn it's okay to be a girl and love who you want to. I'm right there and hope Lesley and her partner are as happy as we've been allowed to be. We've come a long way . . . since, let's see, we were sweet 16 in 1964. It was a very good year!

  • Sometimes I Wish I Were A Boy is a song Lesley really didn't want to record but did so because her producer, Quincy Jones, asked her to. Another song she says she did not want to record is I STRUCK A MATCH (from her 2nd album, Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts).

  • Everyone should, and I emphasize the word SHOULD, be free to follow their feelings and dreams and not worry what the rest of the world will think of them.

    Lesley, you go, girl!

  • she reminds me of Dusty Springfield who was also so pretty and with same sexual preferences as Lesley. Of course there's nothing wrong with that.

  • i wish i were a boy

  • actually it was her last album in high school and she didn't realize she was a lesbian until college

But I agree, it sucks that she had to hide it when there's nothing wrong with being a lesbian!

  • OMG, I totally agree with this song!

  • @QueenOrangeSoda67 typo, for the last sentence, I meant number one victim.

  • @QueenOrangeSoda67 Replied for a wrong person, whats up with me, double fail lol

  • I had no idea Ms. Gore was a lesbian! Good on her for being who she is.

  • ONLY #*^! That's ridiculous!!

  • since when does a girl have to be sooooooooooooo polite? LOL -- here's to Leslie and Dusty and me -- I came out though after 23 years of marriage -- blame it on a liberal college education -- kids were grown and decided I wanted to live my life the way I should have way back in 1975.....

  • has anyone noticed that Lesley and Rick nelson could be twins...?

  • She's been with her partner for about 23-24 years now.

  • @Mgarguemare I think that's great!!!

  • These modern so called "pop tarts" only wish they sounded this good.

  • way before her time lesley was, beyonce eat your heart out

  • Meanwhile, she's been a lesbian since her late teens.

  • totaly it must have been hard for her in because if she came out publicly back then she might not have the career she has today : )

  • Actually, is wasn't until her college years (mid-20s) that Lesley realized she was gay.

  • 'Go where ever you want to go...do whatever you want to do...(but to make that sweet and sensitive.PASS!).."it would only be WRIGHT. brother!"..Rock n Roll!..no I disagree!

  • Lesley didn't really care for this novelty song, however, she recorded it because Quincy Jones (her producer) liked it and asked her to record it. It was released as the B side of the single Hey Now. Both sides received air play. Consequently, Hey Now suffered on the charts.

  • Check out Lesley's website for concert information at lesleygoredotcom

  • Cool Song..But Does She Really Wanna Love Other Girls!..Jealousy now is COOL!(?)

  • LOL Yeah Now we know why she wishes she was a boy '->. Ever since she came out of the closet JUST KIDDING SHE WAS/GREAT !

  • beyonce copied lesley gore, she was before her time

  • Lesley Gore should be insulted that Seance is copying her style. Lesley would not mind if were someone with real talent, not the likes of Ms. Knowles.

  • Right on Lesley!

Even though society has changed a lot, sometimes it still sucks to be a girl.

Seriously I am getting really sick of men I don't know calling me "babe" or "doll".

  • i hope you let them know it's disrespectful. don't them get away with that.

  • and how old are we? lol

  • @musicmuse202 Gotta agree with what you say, but the truth is gender role still exsits so yeah, girls were usually treated as weak ones most of the time, one advantage is that they were protected by the strong ones.

And being a boy will take lots of insults, you need strong will and strong body to be a boy. If you are a weak boy (in a mental as well as physical way), you will be the number victim in bullying.

  • @musicmuse202

Lol you know where Lesley Gore got the idea for this song right?

She just found out she was a lesbian, and she found out she couldn't do what she wanted, namely go after other girls. Therefor she wished she was a boy, so she could get with girls and nobody would frown upon her.

Kinda sad she was so locked up in her taboo-filled time.

  • @musicmuse202 any dude who calls me those names gets whooped

  • ok...

  • She is a great singer. Second i was reading back and seen something, You know there are different types of gay the song was about how back then if a girl even went up to a boy and ask them to go out or phoned them it was looked down at. It had nothing to do with her private life. Its just a song! Try to explain the how girls felt about not being about to ask a boy to dance or to go out to the movies after school.

  • Excuse me, but I read in Wikipedia that she as recently as (I think) 1985 or 2005 came out of the closet. You might want to check it out for yourself.

  • Actually, Leslie Gore is a lesbian; she came out a few years ago with her lover, with whom she has been for around 25 years.

  • Saw a drag show with one singing this song...was wonderful!

  • "I wish I were young when she was*(I was born way too late)

    Talented and gorgeous singer:)

  • ironic....lol :oP

  • lol

  • lol

  • Interesting...

  • I found out today about the orientation. Saw her perform last night....Great memories of her hits. I'm glad for her lifestyle choice. Live and let live. Doesn't affect her talent or my respect and appreciation for her....message from a heter...person. lol Lesley....

  • SOMETIMES I WISH I WERE A GIRL

  • I believe that she is saying that back then girls weren't allowed to 'ask'. So she wanted to dance with him and couldn't ask him.

  • Haha, that's what I thought too...

  • Right on, girls back in the 40's and 50's and into the 60's did not ask boys out on dates they could get a bad repretation for doing so. It wasn't that they were not allowed to it was just part of the old Victorian way of looking at proper manners and etiquette between men and women. This died out in the early to mid 70's. A girl was just suppose to wait for the boy to ask her out or dance . This song has nothing to do with being gay! I should know I was a teenager in the 50's.

  • Yeah now all the girls is loose it was heaven for my Kid!

  • Lesley Gore is awesome!

  • well not that my opinion matters; but "she's a great singer first and her choice of life style is hers.

  • Thanks, Lanny, for bringing "sanity" to the forum! Great singer.

  • Guys,Please don't do a disservice to yourself by dismissing Lesley Gore as just another lesbian.Back in the 1960's her records were played everywhere including the R & B radio stations.I never would have guessed she was gay,but then again I didn't know there was such a thing as gay people in the world until I was 12.Talk about innocent times.

  • She didn't "feel a need" to scream it out. Everyone she worked with and also her friends knew about her lifestyle.

  • who cares i live lesbian they are cool

  • Lesley is a beautiful singer. her personal life is none of OUR business.

  • Gore announced in 2005 that she is a lesbian. -Wikipedia.

    Go lesbians/gays!

  • she hosted an episode of 'in the life'-the gay weekly show-so I guess that was her way of coming out.

  • Does it really impress you that she's a lesbian, or just a great singer?

  • i didn't know she was gay. and she's a very talented singer.

  • wow. how long did she know?

  • Wow this song was amazing 4 its time

  • hey stupid witch!! it's all about the music, it's a great song and that's all it was, when you tear up there private lives because you have none of you'r own, it ceases to be about the music, and it should always be about the music

  • You are a very smart person! That's EXACTLY it!!!

  • That does not mean nothing. That was a stupid statement.... Does not make sense. nothing about being a boy liking women.....

  • Peedabo, puppychick's comment was funny. I was going to say something like that myself. Of course the lyrics weren't going to go *that* far in 1963, but still singing "I wish I were a boy" probably hit home to Lesley.

  • brent, how about 'Little girl go home' that's such a great ballad, that no one ever mentions.

  • A novelty song from Lesley's fourth album, Girl Talk and the B side of Hey Now. Unfortunately, djs played this side as much as Hey Now, consequently neither song was a huge success.
