@jabooper I don't really have a Problem with Lasers.I'm used to sail Contender here in Germany but I sail Laser if the Wind is too strong.I'm just not a laser maniac.Instead of Laser 4.7 or radial I prefer the Europe dinghy. Laser Standards are enjoyable at all
@ljlassi i am not going to just shout and give out crap to you because its your opinion. you are 100% right about that about that if it was about 10 or more years ago but they are nothing like that now a huge amount of thinking and designing into everything besides the hull. i have sailed a top end laser for a year now and for me the boat is fantastic because the design is all the same it takes a lot of skill to get a first place.sail a laser during the summer they are very fun
@osamabinpacman I have sailed it multiple times, and if im someday gonna make an olympic career it'll be likely with Laser. I must admit they have developed a lot, but the problem (or advantage, depending on your taste and physics) is that the sail and mast cannot be trimmed properly, and the hull shape makes sailing it a lot different than sailing any other olympic classes.
At the end Laser sailing is more about tactics and physical fitness than other olympic classes.
@ljlassi And the problem with learning tactics and getting fit would be......? If you're a trim/setup guru (and I appreciate and enjoy this aspect of sailing as I'm a qualified sailmaker) there are always other classes to satisfy the urge a lot of us have to tune to the enth degree. I just don't think the laser was ever designed to be like that...it's more of a windurfer that you sit on...really simple, physical and fun. These qualities don't invalidate the design...just catagorise it.
@thehappyinsomniac There is no problem with that. But what i think is a problem is that many young sailors move to laser straight after optimist or start in Laser. And why is that a problem? Because (as you should know well as a sailmaker) you do not learn the sail trim and boathandling skills needed for other olympic classes by sailing Laser. And this is a real problem if you aren't the right size, as without proper sail and mast trim racers have to weigh pretty much the same
@ljlassi So, you're original comment that "the boat sucks" was inaccurate and a pretty broad brush. The boat's fine FOR WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. Sounds to me as if you're a sailor who's struggling to compete in a particular boat that maybe doesn't suit your body size/weight/shape. Well you could always try another avenue of competition mate. I bet there are shot put specialists in the olympics who'd like to have been sprint stars...but they just weren't made that way. Tough luck.
@thehappyinsomniac I actually sail Europe. I think id fit best for Laser because i like doing physics training and at the moment i think i might be even better in that than in actual sailing ;) Im also ideal size for Laser Standard.
But i think sailing laser is still not as fun as a boat like europe which u can play with more easily especially in downwind.
I agree my first comment was a bit inaccurate. But Laser is getting too popular with too young people as i said earlier.
@ljlassi Understood. I personally wouldn't want to race a laser for exactly the reasons you've outlined so I understand where you're coming from. I actually have some reservations about the laser as an olympic class because of it's tuning limitations but having said that, I've had some fun rides on days with a bit more wind than usual. Cheers and good luck in the future mate.
downwind in the harbour in 20knts against a 4knt tide makes pretty good fun :) you wont believe the size of the waves we get where i sail they arent big like in here but they are very steep and fast moving!. especially when you get close to the sand bar!
@poyman3 He sails on the north sea, when I was trying to pass my test in the low-lands, I passed every aspect but my trainer just failed me because he thought I was not ready for the sea, after a couple of lessons more I got it, this just shows that they won't allow you sailing on the north sea with not enough experience, the north sea is after all a dangerous sea
when you get these storm conditions with long period waves then you get high waves with a long wavelength (about 75m for a 7sec wave) which makes them less steep and "smooth" between the peaks and you get the effects you were sailing in. Excellent sailing, how did the gybes go?
amazing sailing. It looks rather like a fight, and I would like to see him go back from where he came from ;-)

I don't think I've ever sailed a Laser without sticking the mast under water. lol

if you're not scared of getting wet, the Laser is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

What an awesome boat considering it was pretty much designed during the course of a phone conversation.
thehappyinsomniac 2 months ago
@thehappyinsomniac Well it designed for mass production and that isn't too hard. The boat is cheap but if you ask me the boat sucks.
