In the end a future power is lessened and cheaper goods from a less powerful nation that they might control in the end. After 1863 and it didn't look so good they started backing out completely so as not to have the North to ticked at them. The south could've won if they would've invaded in the early part of the war. If you wanna talk about the South winning the War Between the States, a far more likely result would have Stonewall Jackson surviving at Chancellorsville, and going on to give the South a stunning victory at Gettysburg. Just him being there would have made all the difference.

What would had happend in the aftermath of a confederate victory isn't necessarily very clear. The Union had an advantage of a bigger population and more industry, but the Confederation had valuable raw materials like cotton and tobacco. So economically it was quite even.The big questions would be if the Union could/would launch another war, and how, especially, UK and Mexico would react.
Gettysburg could've been a confederate victory if they had reach Cemetery Hill and the surronding ridge before Buford got his union-troops placed there. The confederates had an advantage by outnumbering the union, so it all came down to gain and keep the highgrounds.
... Had Lee won at Gettysburg it would have meant a heavy strike into the heartland of the Union threatening Baltimore, D.C. and Philly. That could had forced The Union to make a hasty peace.

Given that the South was fighting defensively, had reasonably good commanders early on, had an army consisting of religion-drunk zealots and a brutal conscription scheme filling out the numbers, and a had a captive labor force to work with ... the South had a chance to hold on long enough to get Britain and France to intervene, which only underscores the treasonous underpinnings of the Confederacy.
There is an oversight in this thinking: how would the South control the slave population, which in some areas outnumbered whites 5 to 1? Second, where would the South have gotten money to rebuild when they lived in an artificial economy with little to trade, but with 80% of the population illiterate and without skills? Who would your allies and trading partners be? Yes, it's nice to fantasize about winning the Civil War, but the reality of the situation was the system would have collapsed.
It would mean white people would enjoy their comfy plantation lives built on the backs of slaves until Mexico or another imperial power of the 19th century invaded a weakened CSA. Just a thought

I do often wonder how differnt things would have been had Jackson not been shot at Chancellorsville & he had been leading the fight at Gettysburg rather then Longstreet. His aggressiveness could certainly have led the Rebs to a victory on the second day when Sickles advanced from his original position & opened up the Union line.

The Southerns could only win with intervention by England or France on thier behalf. All you need is the Trent Affair, or the Battle of Cherbough (1864) to drag the Europeans against the CSA. At that point the CSA can win a limited victory (No West Virginia, Arizona, Virginia's border moved to the Rappahanock, Virginia's penninsula ceeded to Maryland, no Border states, Mississippi becomes an international water way, East Tennesee goes to the Union)

Even if the Confederacy had achieved its independence, it would have had artificial borders crossed by language and culture. And slavery was becoming unsustainable.
England almost did join the side of the south but most british advisors were at the battle of Sharpsburg which saw the bloodist day of fighting in the entire war and soon after that the advisors wanted nothing to do with this war

This does make more sense than many other videos I've seen. However, I do some issues.
1. the slaves in Missouri were concentrated along the Missouri River, in the north of the state.
2. I don't think Mexico would want Southern California back. It would more likely want parts of New Mexico and Arizona, since they were more Hispanic at the time.
3. Virginia would probably let at least part of W. Virginia go.
4. Maryland would have probably joined the Confederacy.
This would not happen... There are so many things wrong with this. First, by the point in time of your "Battle of Burlington" the South was crushed to the point where the only way they could win is if the North just gave up. Secondly, Farragut was a admiral not a general. Thirdly, even Farragut would be able to defeat even the most determined militia (they couldn't have one anyways because all the fighting age men were in the army) do to better trained troops and better weaponry. @ScienceGoneMad Mexico would not fight the Union because first, they were fighting the French and the Austrians and second, the Union were helping them. The Confederates abhorred thought of arming slaves and "persons of color" so the use of black troops would not happen. Someone like Sherman or Meade would have taken Grant's place had he died. Another error is the lack of information on Sherman's march to the sea. Lee and Johnston would have had a force that was well commanded in their rear.

@DavidbarZeus1 For the majority of the war, those blacks who served, were only allowed to serve as support forces. They were not inclined to put weapons in their hands and did not. Only late in the war, purely out of desperation, did they begin to reconsider their earlier policy of not allowing blacks to handle weapons at all.

I have probably given the Confederate Army more credit than they actually deserve regarding this subject. @forsythbill1 As a historian I have to say that you have it backwards. Slavery was not economical at all. infact it was killing the south. The reason for this is that the wages of a factory worker in the North for his (I did not use her, because women made about half of what men made in factories) working life was HALF the cost of a slave. In other words the slave owners had to pay more than twice what the northerners did for labor and that does not include food, clothing and shelter.
@kraigthorne I find this line of thought ludicrous. Established planters need only provide food, minimal clothing, and minimal shelter. How did they pay more? A new slave might cost a small fortune in gold, but most planters were only relying on reproduction for sustainability.

In 1808 the importation of slaves became illegal and as a result the only slaves that could be bought or sold in the USA had to have been born in the USA or bought in the USA before 1808. With new cotton plantations popping up in the south after the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 the demand for slaves went up. When demand goes up and supply does not go up prices go up.
@kraigthorne Yet if you have several families, the initial cost is only point where a great expense is involved. If your slaves are having children, then you are isolated from supply and demand economics unless you wish to sell at great profit. A couple of generations without inbreeding would have been possible with just a handful of slaves. Thus I do not buy the argument that slavery was uneconomical and unsustainable..merely unethical.
We'd have probably sent most of the former slaves back to Africa and wouldn't be in the mess we're in now, nor would our first lady be such an asshole!

The only way for the South to have won would be to follow Nathan Bedford Forest plan and launch a Guerrilla war against the North after Lee surrendered at Appomatox. Then we would have bled the North dry.

@SubvertInvertAvert That was the South's great hope and it seems to me that the South had a chance to win foreign support and therefor had a chance, however small, of winning the war. So I've not quite believed it was a forgone conclusion the South would loose! Even if folks as brilliant as Shelby Foote have claimed the Confederacy didn't stand a chance.
The problem is that by late 1864 at the latest the war is completely unwinnable. The South is suffering from near hyperinflation, it is in debt to its eyebrows, all of the CSA west of GA and east of the Mississippi has either been heavily raided or under Union occupation or both, many of its plantations are in ruins, there are food riots all over the South, there are Unionist concentrations in virtually all Southern states and it is so outnumbered by the North even "Little Mac" can win.
@AUG351 This seems unlikely to me. They had their own problems with French occupation in the early 1860's. Also at that time Mexico was still bitter from 1847 and did not recognize Texas as a part of another country, Union or Confederate. And they did not have much sympathy for the rest of the South (especially Louisiana) which helped Texas in its revolution, nor for the Confederate government whose policy was to one day establish a "tropical empire".

The Union had an advantage of a bigger population and more industry, but the Confederation had valuable raw materials like cotton and tobacco. So economically it was quite even.The big questions would be if the Union could/would launch another war, and how, especially, UK and Mexico would react.

Gettysburg could've been a confederate victory if they had reach Cemetery Hill and the surronding ridge before Buford got his union-troops placed there. The confederates had an advantage by outnumbering the union, so it all came down to gain and keep the highgrounds.

His aggressiveness could certainly have led the Rebs to a victory on the second day when Sickles advanced from his original position & opened up the Union line.
Interesting though, how little decisions made then could really have changed the war either way.

The Southerns could only win with intervention by England or France on thier behalf. All you need is the Trent Affair, or the Battle of Cherbough (1864) to drag the Europeans against the CSA. At that point the CSA can win a limited victory (No West Virginia, Arizona, Virginia's border moved to the Rappahanock, Virginia's penninsula ceeded to Maryland, no Border states, Mississippi becomes an international water way, East Tennesee goes to the Union)

This does make more sense than many other videos I've seen. However, I do some issues.
1. the slaves in Missouri were concentrated along the Missouri River, in the north of the state.
2. I don't think Mexico would want Southern California back. It would more likely want parts of New Mexico and Arizona, since they were more Hispanic at the time.
3. Virginia would probably let at least part of W. Virginia go.
4. Maryland would have probably joined the Confederacy.

This would not happen... There are so many things wrong with this. First, by the point in time of your "Battle of Burlington" the South was crushed to the point where the only way they could win is if the North just gave up. Secondly, Farragut was a admiral not a general. Thirdly, even Farragut would be able to defeat even the most determined militia (they couldn't have one anyways because all the fighting age men were in the army) do to better trained troops and better weaponry. The Confederates abhorred thought of arming slaves and "persons of color" so the use of black troops would not happen. Someone like Sherman or Meade would have taken Grant's place had he died. Another error is the lack of information on Sherman's march to the sea. Lee and Johnston would have had a force that was well commanded in their rear.

Only late in the war, purely out of desperation, did they begin to reconsider their earlier policy of not allowing blacks to handle weapons at all.

@forsythbill1 As a historian I have to say that you have it backwards. Slavery was not economical at all. infact it was killing the south. The reason for this is that the wages of a factory worker in the North for his (I did not use her, because women made about half of what men made in factories) working life was HALF the cost of a slave. In other words the slave owners had to pay more than twice what the northerners did for labor and that does not include food, clothing and shelter.

@kraigthorne I find this line of thought ludicrous. Established planters need only provide food, minimal clothing, and minimal shelter. How did they pay more? A new slave might cost a small fortune in gold, but most planters were only relying on reproduction for sustainability.

@Thetruestoryfyi If the facts at the time were as you discribed I would have to agree that what I wrote was ludictous. In 1808 the importation of slaves became illegal and as a result the only slaves that could be bought or sold in the USA had to have been born in the USA or bought in the USA before 1808. With new cotton plantations popping up in the south after the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 the demand for slaves went up. When demand goes up and supply does not go up prices go up.

@kraigthorne Yet if you have several families, the initial cost is only point where a great expense is involved. If your slaves are having children, then you are isolated from supply and demand economics unless you wish to sell at great profit. A couple of generations without inbreeding would have been possible with just a handful of slaves. Thus I do not buy the argument that slavery was uneconomical and unsustainable..merely unethical.

here is a fun fact. almost 40% of the nations armed forces come from texas... the south could rise, and win, if it really wanted to, but it would be very bad seeing as we would be vulnerable to attack from a foriegn power, like china.

@duxinarowe0 I strongly suspect that while Bedford Forrest was a powerful and cunning warrior with many Southern men up for a protracted bloodbath against Yankees and countless freed slaves, the North had their predators too. Phil Sheridan for ex. Or his accomplishments in the Shenandoah don't impress there were surely many others and who knows what monsters the North would have unleashed esp. after the forgiving and generous Lincoln was dead and War Dept. creatures like Stanton were unleashed

@SubvertInvertAvert That was the South's great hope and it seems to me that the South had a chance to win foreign support and therefor had a chance, however small, of winning the war. So I've not quite believed it was a forgone conclusion the South would loose! Even if folks as brilliant as Shelby Foote have claimed the Confederacy didn't stand a chance.

The problem is that by late 1864 at the latest the war is completely unwinnable. The South is suffering from near hyperinflation, it is in debt to its eyebrows, all of the CSA west of GA and east of the Mississippi has either been heavily raided or under Union occupation or both, many of its plantations are in ruins, there are food riots all over the South, there are Unionist concentrations in virtually all Southern states and it is so outnumbered by the North even "Little Mac" can win.

@AUG351 This seems unlikely to me. They had their own problems with French occupation in the early 1860's. Also at that time Mexico was still bitter from 1847 and did not recognize Texas as a part of another country, Union or Confederate. And they did not have much sympathy for the rest of the South (especially Louisiana) which helped Texas in its revolution, nor for the Confederate government whose policy was to one day establish a "tropical empire".

@S2Cents True at this point even the Union was suffering from massive war weariness, There were riots all over the north from people that refused to die in war just so that the Union could maintain it´s domination over the south!
Such a severe defeat(loosing the commanding general IS s HELL of a morale-killer)) might/would have caused the union congress to force Lincoln into negotiations with the Confederacy at least!

Basically: 1) Totally unrealistic. 2) If your point is to show how the South could have possibly won and the consequences follow Occam's razor, i.e. the principle that generally recommends selecting from among competing hypotheses the one that makes the fewest new assumptions.

Out of curiosity, why would Great Brittan and Mexico attack the Union? Perhapse a little more fittion music from the time perios, but otherwise, nice job.
Historical note... Maryland, though being Union, was mostly a Dixie supporting state, and there would be a good chance the locals would have joined an assault on DC if Richmond, VA had asked.
