I remember this from watching Sesame Street during my childhood, many years ago. It brings back a lot of memories. This skit is classic, and I still love it as much now as I did when I was a kid, and it makes me laugh more now than it did then. They don't make children's shows like that anymore.

I live in Portland, and the Muppets etymology is widely known and is old news. Plus every reference reports that he stated what you're putting forth sarcastically or jokingly.

Even though those two words can be combined to create "menomena" (and why not "menomenon"?), do you really think they would've come up with it without having heard the Muppets song first? Look up "Occam's Razor" before you answer.
