My life was enriched so much when I learned about Mario Lanza and have been a big fan for 40 years, This world was blessed so much by this man's talent. As there is only one Caruso, there is only one Mario. May he RIP. Ed
Please stop using such offensive language and remember what this posting facility is for - i.e. to comment on the recording you have just listened to.

Definitely the best rendition of this aria ever... Mario was the master. Perfect diction, passion and clarity ...... absolutely wonderful, still thrills me with his singing.
Viva Lanza - the world's best., never surpassed!!!
a million dollar violin may have a better sound quality but it is the player that makes the melody live and moves people's heart eventhough he plays with a ten thousand dollar piece. Voices with passion,to me,Lanza and Corelli are the most outstanding. What is opera? human emotions! Corelli is better for heroic roles and Lanza is all round.
Haha some of the comments on here. Do yourself a favour and buy Michael Bolton's "My secret passion" album, put it into a stereo worth at least 5K and really listen to a heart stopping voice. Mario did everything with passion, but born with a great voice- he was not.
@ettoreB1961 Unfortunetly you wern't born with great hearing but if you like you might want to look at sinusoid waves on a scope and check fidelity and clarity in the waveform of various singers etc. Look up the word Harmonic on Wiki to get you started, at least you'll learn some of the lingo related to sound even if you are deaf. Regarding the off-pitch singing: Many tenors do it on this aria and other emotional arias for emotional emphasis. This is one of the best versions I've heard, but I prefer this aria done by several others for various reasons. Caruso's 1904 version is my spine-tingling favorite. I only wish they could have captured his voice better.
Every time I hear Mario sing this aria..I am moved by
his reading of the first line 'e lucevan le stelle' it is other worldly..
it brings me right into Cavaradossi's moment...some throw away certain lines..all
seem to be important to Mario..some others are Di Stefano's 'dammi colori' leading into 'Recondita armonia' from Tosca..or when Gigli sings 'passa la vita mia' in the aria 'Si fui soldato' from Andrea Chenier..to me ..these great singers
Mario Lanza makes me think of Bellini, Mozart, they all died in such young age, but so much talent to share with the world. I watched The Student Prince with my father when I was 8, Lanza's passionate singing deeply touched my heart and soul. I then set a goal to learn singing ever since, I am so thankful for many years being able to learn some of the beautiful opera arias, because of the inspiration from Mario Lanza, which is so amazing. For me, Mario Lanza is like an angelic sent by God to me.
WOW!!!! One of the most powerful songs EVER written! Amazing interpretation by Mario Lanza... only a few tenors could move you like him. THANK YOU FOR THE UPLOAD!
Lanza was off pitch on many of his recordings, but this one doesn't seem that bad, actually. And I'm pretty neurotic about pitch . . for example, I'm a huge Jussi Bjorling fan and I constantly cringe because he's pretty much always sharp. Love him anyway, but still.
True test of "E lucevan": Never mind who is singing it, or where, or when. Just close your eyes and listen. If you shed a tear or two end of the performance, it is great rendition. If you don't, it ain't!
My mother treated us to Mario and as a child I noticed he would exceed the key, without losing the song. Critics are right to note it, but like the others who have never felt such power and emotion in any other artist, I follow him wherever he takes us. I believe it is from learning the songs at a young age and not caring that the orchestra remains locked into the written music.
2:36 is incredible, he definitely hit the mark of perfection there. I don't think I have ever heard anyone as perfectly on pitch in this aria as was Lanza here.
The fact that Mario Lanza was the greatest versitile Tenor ever, makes everything he sang, sound so good.....But I still think Placido Domingo sings this just a shade better...
I'm going to say something about this, since it came up about "pitch". Just this once. I'm sorry but when someone has to spend their time listening to a a premise and call it relating to the music, one has lost what music is. No one will ever measure, this or that, or get obsessed about this or that, or relate it to their ingrained indoctrinated ideology and really hear what Mario Lanza does or what the voice itself can do, because it's about singing and it's about music. NOTHING ELSE
He died way too young, i truly believe if he lived he would have held notes a lot longer & would broke records like MDM two recording of 19 second notes!
"Pitchy" or not in this recording... both Pavarotti and Placido in interviews have admitted that Lanza was a major early influence on how they wanted to sound. And he remained one of their favorites tenors ever. That should count for something... in my book it does.
I think with better care of voice and body Lanza would have had a long and highly respected career. Didn't happen that way. Sad sad story.
Its incredible. This is the first time I heard Lanzas rendition. I must say it is terfific. His rolling r's are a little annoying to me but wow, what emotion.
My favorite version was Domingo's but this is equally great.
Re pitch: I think in some of the phrases in the beginning the pitch sounds wavering because he's allowing a sort of 'parlando' casualness in his breath support. As the dramatic intensity increases he deliberately strains the pitch for greater expressiveness.
what some people miss, is the sound, the feeling he puts everythink in to it, like its his last song. there are many, great tenors but to me lanza was the voice..........
I have loved this voice since I was 9 years old. I was sitting having my dinner when his death was announced. There are some wonderful singers but none to match Mario Lanza.
I feel very sad thinking of Mario Lanza. His voice was out of this world - his talent so unique that the only one I can think of equally gifted was his own idol (I guess), Enrico Caruso.
I think Hollywood - and bad advisors - had detrimental influence on him. - Sad story....
His life was like a tragic opera - a brilliant voice, never really used to it's fullest capability, a man who was controlled by Hollywood and in the end, Lanza died of a broken heart realising he might not ever be recognised for what he was - a special tenor.
In this piece the opera character is a soldier who knows he is about to die. He speaks of small and great pleasures, parting with them. Lanza captures the most realistic intense emotions of that man.
You may be right. I remembered Domingo in uniform performing this. I rechecked and he was not. Also he was/is under military guard in the youtube video of this same piece.
they would never let a studio recording out with him or anyone singing flat, live it can happen to anyone but this is studio sound. People have a right to hate anyone or any singer, I never liked much Pons but many do. I like many singers and yes Lanza had a great voice.
Thanks, 4Rachy -- I'm glad I defended Lanza! (Sorry, Ma) I listened again, and it's just the portamentos. The notes landed dead on. So, Lanza rocks...And I read the Domingo reference, and I couldn't agree more. I am waiting for his reincarnation...hope his ilk comes again in my lifetime...
i was shocked to find that two very respectful and legitimate comments that I made regarding this man were removed . Apparently only comments with which the majority agree are permitted. so i will say simply, Mario Lanza if the greatest tenor ever.
His pitch is so perfect. And his resonance of voice is on top of that. It is not possible to convey the emotive effects for which he is famous, and that I have experienced, without pitch perfection. I tune pianos, write digital signal processing software, and have often measure digitally my own pitch sense and found it of "zero beat" quality.
Domingo said Lanza would have been the greatest tenor of all time had he lived. Look it up.
The second line, "e olezzava la terra". My mother, an opera lover, stopped listening to Lanza, sometimes cringing, because to her he often sounded off pitch. I used to question her and defended Lanza...but for the first time, I thought I heard what she meant...I may be wrong...doesn't matter, his voice was extraordinary...what a shame he died so tragically young...
@islandofgrass He does miss a little in the opening lines. Some people so love overly dramatic singing that they can' hear when their heroes fail. Still, the sound is so lovely, who cares?
@islandofgrass I agree, he lost focus in that line and sounds a bit flat. I don't know whether that is commong with him as I don't listen to Lanza often
@islandofgrass only after carezze he Lanza actually sing tuned. And go back off pich at the end, I am impressed how bad this is sung, nevertheless the voice is to be well admired.
But that's a younger Bocelli, not the current. I say his Pagliacci of 2006 recording and Nessun Dorma of 1997 are of the first order. Still, of Pavoratti, Domingo, and Bocelli I find for Lanza. But I am not a vocalist (a pianist).
Wow, OK. I contrast this to Bocelli's performance. I love both these guys! But to put it shortly, Lanza gives me more communication here. I don't speak Italian so I only respond to the emotion. In that, I hear this as a story when Lanza sings, but not Bocelli. (In Bocelli's version he just seems ticked-off.) At about 1:45 Lanza makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up (a revelation in the story?). At about 3/4ths of the way thru I am jolted by tragedy, in the story. What a talent!
I could not have it better - even now as I listen to it at a very low volume, the emotion, the commitment, the passion are all there in abundance - my father, who is in his 80's, says that of all the performances of this aria he has heard from all the great tenors, this version by Lanza is his favourite and in his opinion this aria suits Lanza more than others.
I'm amazed by the stuff people say when discussing these men: one claims no scholar considers Mario a great tenor (I guess Pavarotti and Corelli are not scholars), another that no one comes close to Lanza. Newflash: he's a great tenor and there are a number up there with him: Caruso, Bjorling, Del Moncao, Pavarotti, DiStephano, Bergonizi, Corelli. This recording is Mario at his best: his Lucevan le stelle is both lyric and dramatic, heart rending and musically sublime. Bravo.
Oh no, who did give him never the chance? Just google his name and you will find so many sites and fun clubs that no other singer has, with only exception perhaps Maria Callas. And the critics during his career were excellent. The fact that his name remains vividly alive is the best proof for what I write here.
Right on, professor! With training for opera it possibly have been even better, but Mario opted to go for Hollywood. What training did this man have? I really mean this. Did he have professional training? If only minimal, then for sure, he had the greatest tenor voice ever.
Another great tenor in my view is (was) the young Russell Watson... again, no training early on. Then when he did, health issues basically ruined his great tenor voice... hopefully to be recovered someday.
In response to mkl8000-this is copied and pasted from Lanzas bio-He then studied with noted teacher Enrico Rosati for fifteen months, acquiring a Mario spent more than a year in serious study with Enrisolid vocal technique that enabled him, in his own words, "to sing for hours without becoming tired." His friend and colleague bass-baritone George London later recalled that prior to working with Rosati, Lanza's voice "was unschooled, but of incredible beauty, with ringing, fearless high notes. [
continued.....Before fame came to Mario, he did continue his vocal studies with a New York voice teacher Enrico Rosati, a former voice coach of the late renowned tenor Beniamino Gigli.
I am reading an Opera Magazine and it said that Gaston Rivero is Placido Domingo successor. The glorious sound of his voice was a gift from heaven.WOW.
Well, I dont know many tenors praised as much as Alfred Arnold Cocozza. He has inspired Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti and Roberto Alagna, to mention only three out of many, to become opera singers. His recordings are still well selling. Just google him and find how many websites are dedicated to him.
Dr. Koussevitzky would tell him that, "Yours is a voice such as is heard once in a hundred years."
However, everybody must have the right to express his opinion without being red-thumbed.
mario lanza has done it again. he was a very gifted man. a voice like no other. he really knew how to belt out these operatic songs, with his beautiful voice.
@pianist527 off pitch on pitch, this is not what this rendition is about - one can feel the passion and emotion in the voice and it still makes my sine tingle
A gem,Miss Augusta romania..really...what can words do,before this explosion of beauty and sensitivity...this is the just expression of a true pain!!!!Thanks for posting,Mr...or Miss..or Mrs. Yoni89!
It´s amazing how young people who never heard of Lanza react when they are introduced to his incomparable voice. I dare say, though recordings by Caruso are very poor, that Lanza´s voice was even greater in quality. His recordings, at least in Argentina, are unknown. I started investigating after I watched the film Caruso on TV and then understood why my mother so admired him.
As said above, all other tenors fall short. I have heard Placido´s version and, although I must recognize his talent, it does not reach my heart, and the same happens, to me at least, with Pavarotti, Carreras, Bjoerling, etc. They are wonderful technically in most cases. Lanza was a dreamer who knew how to transmit magic.

Nikonnikon12 1 year ago
Guy CREQUIE

One question to all with knowledge, which tenors are better, the Italians or the Spaniards?

Mario Lanza was my mother's best singer in her time, and she was right !!!

I feel very sad thinking of Mario Lanza. His voice was out of this world - his talent so unique that the only one I can think of equally gifted was his own idol (I guess), Enrico Caruso.
I think Hollywood - and bad advisors - had detrimental influence on him. - Sad story....

Ma è una trascrizione di Lino Banfi? Olezzev' la terra
lrodor 2 years ago
His life was like a tragic opera - a brilliant voice, never really used to it's fullest capability, a man who was controlled by Hollywood and in the end, Lanza died of a broken heart realising he might not ever be recognised for what he was - a special tenor.
phllb 2 years ago 13
In this piece the opera character is a soldier who knows he is about to die. He speaks of small and great pleasures, parting with them. Lanza captures the most realistic intense emotions of that man.
4Rachy 2 years ago 6
Actually, he is a painter. He speaks high treason in the opera, which is why he is sentenced to death.
LetItBe920 2 years ago
You may be right. I remembered Domingo in uniform performing this. I rechecked and he was not. Also he was/is under military guard in the youtube video of this same piece.
Thanks.
4Rachy 2 years ago
they would never let a studio recording out with him or anyone singing flat, live it can happen to anyone but this is studio sound. People have a right to hate anyone or any singer, I never liked much Pons but many do. I like many singers and yes Lanza had a great voice.
halavey 2 years ago
Thanks, 4Rachy -- I'm glad I defended Lanza! (Sorry, Ma) I listened again, and it's just the portamentos. The notes landed dead on. So, Lanza rocks...And I read the Domingo reference, and I couldn't agree more. I am waiting for his reincarnation...hope his ilk comes again in my lifetime...
islandofgrass 2 years ago
i was shocked to find that two very respectful and legitimate comments that I made regarding this man were removed . Apparently only comments with which the majority agree are permitted. so i will say simply, Mario Lanza if the greatest tenor ever.
operalament 2 years ago 3
Lanza? Pitch?
His pitch is so perfect. And his resonance of voice is on top of that. It is not possible to convey the emotive effects for which he is famous, and that I have experienced, without pitch perfection. I tune pianos, write digital signal processing software, and have often measure digitally my own pitch sense and found it of "zero beat" quality.
Domingo said Lanza would have been the greatest tenor of all time had he lived. Look it up.
4Rachy 2 years ago 4
The second line, "e olezzava la terra". My mother, an opera lover, stopped listening to Lanza, sometimes cringing, because to her he often sounded off pitch. I used to question her and defended Lanza...but for the first time, I thought I heard what she meant...I may be wrong...doesn't matter, his voice was extraordinary...what a shame he died so tragically young...
islandofgrass 2 years ago 5
No, he sounds like he's on pitch. Possibly your mother was hearing a "ping" in his voice- can be bothersome if you're a bit neurotic. :P
Yoni89 2 years ago
@Yoni89 his mother was right! he is a bit off pitch in the syllables LA (a bit higher) and TE (a bit lower). Anyway he is amazing ;).

@islandofgrass He does miss a little in the opening lines. Some people so love overly dramatic singing that they can' hear when their heroes fail. Still, the sound is so lovely, who cares?
Lovelytenor1 1 year ago
@islandofgrass No, he is excellent, but very specific, very individual. I have a perfect musical hearing :-)
heartsarrows 1 year ago
@islandofgrass I agree, he lost focus in that line and sounds a bit flat. I don't know whether that is commong with him as I don't listen to Lanza often

@islandofgrass definately sharp
djschlom 1 year ago
@islandofgrass only after carezze he Lanza actually sing tuned. And go back off pich at the end, I am impressed how bad this is sung, nevertheless the voice is to be well admired.
tena2 1 year ago
But that's a younger Bocelli, not the current. I say his Pagliacci of 2006 recording and Nessun Dorma of 1997 are of the first order. Still, of Pavoratti, Domingo, and Bocelli I find for Lanza. But I am not a vocalist (a pianist).
4Rachy 2 years ago
4Rachy 2 years ago 3
Comparing this to bocelli is like comparing a Ferrari California with a Fiat 500, the only "emotional" thing at Bocelli is the fact that he is blind
alexandru2611 2 years ago

Then when he did, health issues basically ruined his great tenor voice... hopefully to be recovered someday.
mkl8000 2 years ago
In response to mkl8000-this is copied and pasted from Lanzas bio-He then studied with noted teacher Enrico Rosati for fifteen months, acquiring a Mario spent more than a year in serious study with Enrisolid vocal technique that enabled him, in his own words, "to sing for hours without becoming tired." His friend and colleague bass-baritone George London later recalled that prior to working with Rosati, Lanza's voice "was unschooled, but of incredible beauty, with ringing, fearless high notes. [
