i waited 2 years to get my younger bro to finally start putting my pc back together, and this happened right next to his face when he switched it on with the new power supply for the first time! big orange ball of death came out of it too! awesome!
I switched voltage of my psu from 220v to 110v. there was a boom and a flash of light, then my computer didnt boot. (the psu was connected). Would my whole system be fried or just the psu? I had a look at the psu in the inside and it looked ok (A brief look, i didnt remove the panels). It was stupid, dont ask me why :P
same thing mouhahaha : BOOOOOOOOM ! OMG ^^"... my ears !!!!! I A little continous biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip in my ears during several hours (a funny experience...) => why my computer didn't boot... ? lol
We had a comp come in for service to get the hard drive formatted but we were greeted by THIS, took out the whole mobo and hard drive/cdrom, RAM all of it. but, it NEVER got the fuse. why on earth is the fuse there for anyway?
Had that happen to me once when I was repairing a shortwave receiver. I inadvertently hooked up a filter cap backwards. As soon as I turned the thing on, BANG!!! Fortunately I lost only the cap and a couple diodes. Sounded like an M-80 going off though, scared the you-know-what out of me!!
kind of funny , i had an old set top box(digital tv thingy from a friend) it stopped working.
i put metho on it and lit it on fire, and after about a min there was fire works type cracks. most likely the caps exploding, and about 5 secs after the bangs i could hear them landing on the roof of the house, the carport roof and the shed. i would say the blown off end cap of them.
probably it's full, try shorting a 9-V battery with a 6200 ohm ¼ watt resistor (blue, red, red, gold) first, it looks ok then it smokes then you see it smoking, it's hot. but dosent explode or hot enough to melt soldering wire
OKAY, I'm in! where do we meet? Oh yeah, one thing I almost forgot... depending on if you are a guy or girl, I will let you give me mouth service on my rod to make it feel better before and after the test trial. If you are a guy, I most likely won't let you, unless you are really, REALLY good looking
LOL. not only does it show electronics giving off sparks and exploding, but its also funny. (for some reason, i find "boom! said the misplaced capacitor" hystarical) Question, though. what was the 2nd explosion 00:19 from?
hey, I thought the video was funny and entertaining, but just out of curiousity, what do you do for job, are you student or do you work, and what type of work do you do? if student, what do you study? I am just curious because I am math student and do the same type of mischief, are you also math student?
no and you know why because they are wired in series not parallel so there was no more energy flowing through the other cap and so therfore it will not explode
Yes, my dear, semiconductors are on fire - they'r effective in killing those rats, so be careful. It's also what could happens if you put too much bell and whistles in the computer - the cheap PSU dies fairly quickly, sometimes brutally.
try taking a lot of caps (big and small) out of thier boards, putting them into a plastic jar, and set it on fire. its fun to laugh at the blasts (till it gets to the big ones)
39,000 uF?? That's amazingly huge for electrolytic!
However, so called "supercapacitors" are available nowadays in capacitances of 2000 F or more (yes, two thousand FARADS, two kF, incredible as it may sound at first), but only up to approx. 2.6 volts.
Maybe some brave person should blow up one of those from behind a bulletproof shield!
nothing better than an explosion in the morning!
Although i will say, not too smart leaving it switched on while it burns lol
5 stars.

hmpf, begin with buying a new psu, it's the first step... and that'll provide with an answer for the rest of the computer...
hobstad 2 years ago
Usually the over-voltage protection (on the output only, not on the input) would have saved the PC... but don't count on it, cheaper PSUs omit this.

myx1997 3 years ago
It was connected to at least 230 volts, 15 amps. a typical psu cap stores ~ 10- 20 joules, so it would overcharge in less than 1/100th of a second.

Did you just put the capacitor in the wrong way?
DarkTrinityX1 3 years ago
and for it to explode it has to be over its rated voltage
davidbball13 3 years ago
My guess is the switch for 110 volts was set and 240 was applied which would put 340 volts dc across a 200 working volt cap.

Good proof that when one of those stupid cheap computer switcher supplies fail, you should just throw it away... they can't be fixed.
soulsonic1978 4 years ago
ah no that was because of incorrect power supply operating voltage... it would have been supplied with 220V and been switched onto the 110V setting
