shut the fuck up. entwistle, JPJ, bruce, flea, pastorius, lee, burton, mccartney, etc. they all were great and they were the best bassists for their bands
@playadominical I never said I was wrong or right about anything. What I was trying to say is that I don't like when people compare and say "oh this guy is soo much better than this guy". And believe me I have plenty of things to do with my life. So why don't we just leave it at that.
Playing acoustic bass without the faster action of an electric bass and with all the effects to cover up your mistakes really sorts out the men from the boys, and John Entwistle here has proved that he is the grandmaster of his game. Townshend was the luckiest guitarist/songwriter of his generation to have a rhythm section with the best bassist of all time and the best drummer of all time (Keith Moon) to back him up.
good comment!! I'm an electric guitar player myself and I use very basic effects! some guitar players ask me why I don't have tons of delay and effects!! I always say 'best for people to hear your actually playing more than anything' :) I'm not into the modern coldplay type one note thing? I like classic rock sounds with balls
"The who are overrated" says shomanca. Really? As a live act? I know you don't mean that. Or do you? Pretty tough to top The Who circa Live At Leeds. I'm not just saying that as a fan. Listen to what critics and other big time musicians say. You don't think much of Townshend as a songwriter? Not everything Pete wrote was a pearl. What do you mean by "overrated"?
@entwistle4ever I'm not sure what idiot your are replying to but someone actually said Townsend can't write? What a moron. The Who is undoubtedly one of the best assemblage of musicians ever. Right up there with The Beatles Floyd Yes Rush
Cream etc etc And Townsend is a freakin genius. I mean, just the album Who's Next has some of the best writing of the century. How about Tommy Quadrophenia etc
Some people are just idiots and you and I have to deal with their stupidity ...just sayin'.
You have to play in a way tha fits what the rest of the band is doing. No point in you standing out in a bad way. Do you want Keith Moon in Led Zeppelin or Motorhead? No. Fate brought the members of The Who together to be arguably the greatest live band of all time. I'm not just saying that coz I'm a fan. Listen to "Live At Leeds." It's all there. Before Entwistle arrrived on the scene no one knew what a bass guitar was or sounded like. After The Ox, they bloody well knew! Cheers.
@shomanca Hell no dude. Can Jack Bruce play a bass like that? im sure but you never hear of it. If anybody invented the modern electric bass it was John Paul Jones.
Flea's got a different style, that would be awesome if Entwistle was still alive and he and Flea could have a bass off! Each following the other at their own creative improvisations and see who bows out. It probably would go on for days!
@ZeBrawler123 i haven't insuted one of most over-rated bassist! (btw Cliff Burton is more overrated than flea). Try to listen to Chris Squire and Geddy Lee!
@Becix97 I'm just going to say Flea is still very good, even though there are better ones out there, even though that's what I was trying to say before.
@Becix97 Agreed, but I do love Flea :P And his stay-simple-so-the-complexity-means-something approach is a great philosophy on a whole mess of instruments. Although Entwhistle was completely unparalleled on the bass in rock, in my eyes.
@robzbobz it's people like you who ruin youtube by filling the comments with idiotic posts about how other people are wrong and you are right. get something else to do with your life.
On an acoustic bass, nonetheless. Do you have any idea how much more difficult it is to work the strings of an acoustic bass than that of a solid body electric? Quite a bit more difficult, actually.
RIP. WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE? ALMOST ALL OF THE REAL ROCK STARS ARE @ THAT GR8 GIG IN THE SKY. KIND OF SOMBERS ONES MOOD. TIME TO REFLECT, RECOGNIZE & RESPECT. It doesn't really matter that it's an acoustic, he's still very recognizable. Such an appealing, personal style. Nowadays musicians are technically often very accomplished, but they tend to sound the same, because of a similar training. I miss this sort of distinctive musicians.
Actually what's funny is, he has the same exact style here that Townshend does: sloppy, mistake-ridden, powerful, medlodic, assertive. Same as Keith Moon. Those three guys were on a wavelength only they got. Supposedly other musicians didn't like jamming with them much, but The Who was of the same mind. You'd like to think that's why they could never fully break up.
Oh my god. I could not be a bigger who fan, and I already knew that Entwistle was and IS the best rock bassist in history. but this is some other level shit. I have never seen anything like this.
Hum... His playing style is legendary right? I don't understand why. In that vid, he is approximately playing a melody... But for sure, someone can enlight me.
@Cyllmegil He created the "typewriter", the precursor style of the slap & pop invented by larry graham. Entwistle also changed the vision of the bassist in the scene by his style, formerly unknowned. Set apart that, no big thing...
@Cyllmegil I think you need to watch a lot more Who / Entwistle videos to fully appreciate the mastery he has / had for the bass! Just like any other instrument, there are many, many fantastic players out there....but it was his approach to the bass....like a guitar players vision, that made John Entwistle different! His knickname was Thunderfingers....watch him on Won't Get Fooled Again.....crazy!!! Power, precision, finesse, taste....speed....the man had it all!
@drledsabbath There are many points of view, there is no bad one, but from my point of view there is only John. Basically he made me play bass guitar, I never took any lessons and played and learned while listening to him.
@Fr3r0oOcKkk Not certain of which amazing bass you speak of. The performance in the video is "Behind Blue Eyes" with The Chieftains from 1994. His solo is, in fact, pretty close to the recorded version of this that Roger did with The Chieftains on one of their albums.
Nothing to do with "Cry If You Want," which was a great song but one The Who rarely ever performed after 1982, together or solo.
