Imagine being 10 years old in 1979 and hearing this when it was released.....and now when I'm 42 I still listen and enjoy it. It still sounds like the future. Enjoy. Bearhug. tx
This man was the god of electronic and futuristic sounds back in the early 80s and late 70s,i was crazy for his music and now 25 years on or more i still play his music..fuckin amazing!!!!!
Odd but I'm not an electronica fan, much less a dance music fan. I'm, more or less, a rock 'n' roll boy. But I simply LOVE Gary Numan's earliest records along w/ Kraftwerk's Radioactivity album. And I think I finally figured out WHY I love these: because Gary & Kraftwerk basically replaced the electric guitar (which was, after all, Gary's primary instrument) w/ analogue synthesizers. They used rock beats (Gary using actual live drummers & bass players). It's definitely rock music, not disco!
@donedave Disco in that most electronica/dance music comes closer to disco: really fast beats & heavy bass lines over melody & groove. Rock 'n' roll while definitely emphasizing the beat, lends itself more to melody & harmony than strictly beats & bass lines. I just don't get off on most electronica/dance music (with some exceptions of course- LOVE Madonna's Ray Of LIght record!)
Dark genius, so far ahead of his time, as most innovation. He gives me a glimpse of a possible future that is brutal, yet beautiful, sterile, yet oddly fulfilling. A future that I don't know if I want, but one which I find mesmorizing.
Numan. Strange, unique genius. Noone has ever sounded like him, before or since. "Airlane". First track I ever heard. Immediately riveting. Favorite track? "Down In the Park". Beautiful. Dark. Ominous. And eerie... as... hell... Numan, one of the great originals.
@nightjammer I was 10 when i first heard this album, my brother gave it to me for my birthday and I played it non stop. Makes me feel old too. Funny how music seemed so much more important back then, you wouldn't find 10 year olds getting hooked on downloaded album like i did with practically everything by Numan
Coolest thing is playing this for people who never heard anything else of gary's but 'cars', after about 3 or four of these early songs, they are digging at the CD or DAT trying to figure out what's playing... I send them home with an unmarked mix and let them stew for a week or two. They are universally floored that this is Gary Numan. 100% new fans.
This is 80's stuff yeah, but it just sounds so freaking good again!
@jakkman69 We will not be a distant memory if thery still playing gary/tubeway....They will wish they were us in our time I know I've been there...The anunnaki brought me there to see...and yes its all gary numan and peace...No one goes with out food...no stress and free education....I wish they would take me back and leave me there.
@jakkman69 i agree, wtf could it be an unbelievable party. this kind of music in a dark neon room with black lights and people all dressed in black. gets you out of space and time. such a simple, but epic synthi riff. and so people still dance in the 30th century, it will be this kind of music
how come i've wasted 17 years of my life not knowing about this man? i feel ashamed but at the same time i feel blessed to finally know about it now. this shit makes me high as a kite.
I was 14 when this was released-a friend at a college radio station (WRSE) loaned me the import vinyl-fall of '79,I think. I was playing this months before it came out here in the states. Awesome album-still sounds light years ahead of it's time!
Fuck Nu Metal and Hip Hop, this is real music. Not your tuned down guitars that sound like shit (korn) and your sampled rip off songs (lil Wayne), this is a real form of music, made by a fucking genius called gary numan
I concur. I think in today's music, the problem, there is not enough artists that dare to try new things... that's what made Gary great, he came up with his own thing, you know.
@MercyfulMaiden Modern metal is very good actually, if you've heard any Black Dahlia Murder or Whitechapel you'll know how much talent that actually requires. Gary Numan is a genius, but only in his comfort zone of synth pop.
@MercyfulMaiden look , you ignorant dip-shit .. i LOVE gary numan , but i also love bands like BMTH ,architects , BFMV , a7x , escape the fate , Korn .. and plenty of other bands .. just because you don't like a genre of music dosnt make it shit... *cough* IDIOT *cough*
One of the best synth songs ever. Highly influential on later electronic artists, as well as hip-hop acts and Nu-Metal. There's not enough good that can be said about this man, and the best thing is that he's still out there, kicking it.
I was also ten when my mom bought me this album. I listened to it over and over and over again with my ear pressed against the speaker box. I drove my family nuts. I bought Telekon soon afterwards and did the same.
I was 9 when this came out and I thought somehow that is was David Bowie (hey, I was NINE!). My brother gave it to me for my birthday when I turned ten; he pranked me and told me it was Donald Duck before I took the wrapping paper off the LP. I literally played this thing until the needle would no longer stay on the vinyl! Good times. God damn it, I'm old . . .
@nightjammer dude i am hating you XD. i wish i had that LP of gary numan. i love synthpop and electronic music and all that great classic stuff. even trained my ears to listen 2 vinyl, and analog sounds. i wish i was around for when all these great bands were. dont beat yourself up about age, you were born in probably the best era of music. something other people cant experience, unless someone makes a time machine! probably when i am about your age hahaha.
@nightjammer - Great story - brings back memories ...Wish I would of had this ... listening to vinyl as a kid was fantastic .. I can remember laying on the floor with some huge headphones on - and listening to a whole side over and over - lots of stones, Led Zepp, etc. ... wish I would have known about Gary Numan before - just got into his stuff in the last 5 years ... amazing artist ..
@nightjammer I too was 9 when this came out! I too got it for my birthday (via record token). I was never told it was Donald Duck but I did play it to death. Still do.
One of the best album covers ever. the simplicity of the image is excellent. seeing him on tour soon - touring with this album The Pleasure Priciple 30 years after it was released..
