@directorzwannabe Lol what are you? A legit Diago expert on games or something? I don't know you nor do I care about your views mate. Obviously this has hurt your new gen style gaming but your insults means nothing to no one. I agreed with gexup about his views because they are simply true. Get over it and grow up.
i agree that the biggest problem with fighting games is the memory overcoming skill dilemma i remember the days i tried experimenting with different characters now fighting games aren't as fun cus i normally stick with one character and pull off the moves i memorized cus in order to survive online play its your only way to go
2 questions: 1 Do you recall the title to this one fighter where the characters had a "Beast Form" where attacks were stronger or something (For clarification, I played this in the arcade, so it isn't any of the Beast Wars games)? and 2 WHY IS GUILE'S THEME SO AWESOME?! (it was only a matter of time).
Hey gexup I got a big question that needs an answer. What is your opinion about car combat games? I know there is barely any but arent they technically fighting games? I was expecting to see like twisted metal in this
@GeekGamer7 Car combat is a driving game subgenre. Fighting game must have [physical attacks,] like punches & kicks, while car combat like Twisted Metal uses guns & gadgets to blast off other "cars." Some said that I forgot to put "car combat" in this vid, but cars can't punch or kick. It's just as irrelevant as putting a FPS in the fighting game genre when it belongs in the shooter genre. Just because they're competitive doesn't really mean it's a fighting game cause other genres has it aswell.
@gexup I agree with everything U said in your video. The empty arcade room with "where the hell is everybody?" caption made me laugh. You're right consoles pretty much destroyed the arcade. Yep shooters are the dominant genre now. Fighters & rpg's aren't AS POPULAR today as they used to be compared to during the 90's-early 2000 era. Could U do an PRG genre video?
@gexup meant to say RPG but I imagine U knew that already. its just like how Gamefly & Netflix pretty much own the rental market now. Hollywood video is DEAD and Blockbuster won't be around much longer. I would rather buy a game then re-sell it on ebay than wait 1-2 weeks for Gamefly to send it to me. Last Game I rented was Tatsunoko vs Capcom. If U rented a Game and thought it was crap U just saved yourself a lot of money
Yea, I've played alot of fighting games back then. Some of them were traditional ones, while others where just based on movies/cartoons. One of my favourites would go to Godzilla Save the Earth. A fighting game so addicting for me. anyways, another good VGG video.
Memory vs skill...I'm an old school skill-based fighter and games like guilty gear and marvel vs capcom 2 just got frustrating, because no matter how much skill I used, the guy with the 40 hit combo most likely won. And they had a hard time to. Fighting is suppose to be about skill and I lost hope when street fighter 4 came out with this new behaviour. Luckily, mortal kombat 9 came out and I'm loving it- despite a few annoying exploits you can always win with skill! Nice vid.
@silverbreath1 Thanks, man. You know, I feel the same way with SF4 and all the other fighting games that requires too much memory. But I agree with you on MK9, it put much less memorization than in their previous games and made it so balanced that it is, so far, my favorite game of 2011. There wasn't a single move that I couldn't pull off and thanks for the simplicity that the series needed, quite frankly, MK9 perhaps became the fighting game I've been waiting for since Tekken 6 =)
Another job well done Gexup.Very informative on the genre, which I'm impressed. I'm planning on giving Marvel vs Capcom 3 a chance. Hope it's a good game. Anyway great job!
You forgot about Digimon Rumble Area 2. Both games kick ass but the sequel brought the 4 player action, more modes, and allowed you to digivolve twice now during the battle.
Sorry gexup, I don't usually directly address video uploaders directly, but what do you think is the most reliable source when DIVIDING GAMES INTO GENRES? Thanks in advance!
hey man do beat em up games like scott pilgrim vs the world the game and castle crashers count as fighting games count as fighting games or they there own genre
Nice comprehensive look on 2D fighting games. For a few years now Mortal Kombat has been my personal go-to series for fighting games, but I have to say I find most other 3D fighting games hard to get into, except Soul Calibur - which I recently re-discovered. I disagree that you can only enjoy fighting games with a second player, though. If the game itself is well-made and offers enough gameplay content, that game will be fun even as single player experience.
@HandeToon So I'm basically saying fighting games that aren't fun to play by yourself aren't good fighting games at all. Getting a second player in to join in the fun only gives you the added satisfaction of punching them in the arm when you lose. =) (plus *fighting games; 2D jumped there for no reason).
when you finally gonna do vgg of rpg and i know it gonna be at least a hour long thanks to all the information you have to get and talk about every sub genre and how you can identify and the history of it
Once the top of the barrel but last gen had to many bad fighting games. I played one where you can beat any computer just by mashing one button. It's good to see things are coming back this gen
Great job, Gexup! You basically wrapped up everything that needs to be learned about Fighting Games (shocking to know that you like wrestling games) and thanks for recommending us about arcades in Japan. It sucks that arcades here in America are empty, old, and smelly. I hope that you're enjoying Japan over there =)
Is it only me who had this idea before for a fighting game?:
You have the same rules as in a normal wrestling games but take the more caotic feel and add in elemental powers and maybe have the levels more exciting ex: Rooftop, volcano top, backyard, cruise boat and so on... And offcourse have the same controll as in a normal wrestling game... game diveloper take my idea. There are probably some games like this. But I want this idea to have more spotlight.
baby bowser: i'm gonna take you out while i'm in the ship's "cockpit". just don't hit the one word in the sentence that's highlighted in red. that's in no way my weak spot.
While I'm not that into fighting games, I have played a few of them. My favorite I've played is either Tatsunoko vs Capcom Ultimate All-Stars on the Wii, Guilty Gear Dust Strikers on the DS, or Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 on the PS2.
I just got back into tekken 3 and you just made a video about fighting games. AND I'm getting into medievil again too, and you showed some clips of that near the beginning. I am now at peace.
I love your vids so much gexup your educational and whenever i do a video i take from what makes you so great depth, educational,Entertaiment, effort thank you for this increabile genre videos i look forward to entertaning my viewers and will give you a shoutout as soon as possbile
I remember going to a video store when I was 4 or 5 years old and I saw an arcade machine with Street Fighter II. As soon as I saw it, I asked my dad to let me play a game.
In the end, i think I ended up having my dad spend more then $100 to let me play street fighter.
Once again,it's an awesome vid.If you don't want to do this, fine but how 'bout a Top 10 favourite fighting games?
Also I slightly disagree with you saying arcades are non-existent outside of Japan because of this awesome arcade in Youghal where they have cabinets for OutRun 2SP,House of the Dead 1 and 3,Time Crisis 2 and 3 and even the 1989 TMNT game(which was 4-player).
One more thing,it's DBZ Tenkaichi not Budokai(which is 3D).
thus video was very informative. Well done! and also i have a question that may seem stupid. What is the first gex game and what are the next games in sequence? because I want to get into gex because i never played that game before.
Awesome Retrospective. Fighting Games are awesome and still to this day I love playing alot of them. Classic Stuff like Street Fighter,Mortal Kombat,King of Fighters,Virtua Fighter,Tekken,Dead or Alive,Guilty Gear and Killer Instinct are amazing games to play. The new stuff like BlazBlue:Continuum Shift,Tekken 6,Super Street Fighter IV,Super Smash Bros Brawl,Dragon Ball Raging Blast and of course the new Mortal Kombat are amzing fighters to play as well. May the genre live on.
