I am sure the car got sold as an executive car after the movie was made and most likely driven into the ground in the 50s, but wouldn't it be awesome to have that exact car and be able to document it!!!!! I saw this movie as a kid and have always loved it, wish someone could make movies like this again!
1953 WAS THE LAST FLATHEAD V8 FOR FORD AND MERC. A SMOOTH GREAT ENGINE , WITH A STANDARD SHIFT IT WOULD HAVE MADE THE CLIMB BETTER WITH THAT LOW HP. ENGINE IN 1953. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THEM BUY A LINCOLN OR CADDY CAUSE THEY WHERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE WEALTHY. YES THE OLDS DID HAVE MORE HP IN 1953, HOWEVER FORD MOTOR CO. SUPPLIED THE CARS AT THAT TIME FOR THE SHOW. FUNNY IN THAT ONE SCENE YOU KNOW IT'S A LINCOLN USED. I ARGUED WITH A FRIEND OVER THAT TILL HE SAW IT SLOWLY AND THE LINCOLN GRILLE.
No it's not heavy enough! The best lower priced car to have pulled the trailer in real life would have been a '53 Olds Super 88 with four-speed Hydra-Matic, but it would have had to be bought before the H-M plant burned in August and they put Dynaflows in Oldses and Cadillacs. They used a Lincoln stand-in for the heaviest towing because of its larger engine and Hydra-Matic transmission. The low gear scenes in the mountains are my favorite parts.
This movie is one of my favorite movies

I read where the actor car salesman committed suicide not long after the movie was released.
