  • I think I'm gonna teach bullet to "touch" now lol. I like that.

  • Would clicker training be helpful for a teething puppy? We have a Silky Terrier that is about 13 weeks old and chews everything! I've tried the no-chew sprays and the toys stuffed with treats to divert her attention from the furniture or the house but it only lasts a few seconds and she goes back to chomping on the couch or base boards.

  • I've viewed a few of your vids and I'm impressed. Short, sweet, simple, and right to the point. I'm subscribing and wished I hadn't subscribed to others.

I am the proud owner of a Black Lab (first one as I've always owned Beagles all my life) named Romeo "the Lover". He's 8 weeks old and the first thing I'm working on is crate training and leash walking.

I've always wanted to understand "Clicker" training and you explained it well. And well enough to make me intrigued.

  • Wait to click & treat until your dog finishes his business outside. If you c&t as he starts you will teach him to start peeing and not to finish. I know someone who did just that. So her dog peed a little then stopped so he could start again because he had been rewarded for starting - not finishing. It was fixed with better timing. Wait just until he finishes.

  • Thank you so much for explaining how to do this!!! I have two rescues that recently came to live with us, and one is very excitable and easily distracted, but really smart. It makes training a bit tough with him, but I think this may be the key to turning him into a champ of a listener!!! Thanks again!!!

  • Amazing info! Thank you!!

  • You said in the housetraining video that you should wait until your dog finishes doing his business outside to reward, whereas in this video you said, "as soon as they start to go, click, and reward." Using a clicker, would you wait to click until the dog finishes or do so as soon as he starts to go? Thanks, and good information.

  • @hope336 this is the same question i have. Maybe we should email him?

  • oh u are amazing!!!

  • Thanks, your videos are really helpful. Its almost immediate recognition with my 10 month old springer. Thanks!

  • a clicker just helps a dog to understand what its getting rewarded for as its the same noise after a command its basically a clearer signal for "good boy" but u must be quick as the dog sits etc. As far as i know clicker is just use for the beggining and after a while the dog will know what to do without it but im not so sure

  • if u start using a clicker, do u have to click forever?

  • @elein27 No - the clicker is only used for training.

  • Should I only use treats for training while he's learning and only use as a reward?

Great videos btw,,, thanks so much for all the info! =)

  • awesome tip! I'll clap my hands

can I also use the clicker (in my case the clapping) to "call" the dog, for exemple when he's outside and I want him to come inside?

  • I was wondering. is izzie a pit? and was she harder to clicker train? i have a 4 1/2 mth old pit pup i absolutely need to clicker train.

  • Are Weenies Human Food I Dont Want My Pit To Get A Stomach Ache

  • When do you stop using the clicker?

  • my baby girl chihuhia she is 5 months old She knows sit, down (abit), bow, shake, hight five but i have not clicker traning and i start clicker training with her even thought she knows some tricks?

  • I have a 10 month old adopted puppy (Dachshund/Chihuaua= Chi-weenie) who just doesn't GET that she is supposed to pee outside. She will walk around for 1/2 hour and not pee. How can I use a clicker to reward her when she WON"T pee outside? She pee's outside maybe once or twice a week.

  • I do have a question , if you start using this method and suddnetly stop when they learn all the tricks you want then to know, would it be okay to take them off the clicker completly. thanks :)

  • what is the ideal time when I can start training my dalmatian with a clicker

  • Instead of using a clicker, can you associate food with a sound such as a 'tut' sound with your tongue?

  • I have a 1 1/2 yr old dog that i adopted las september from a shelter. He gets too exited and tends to jump on poeple... Ive tried to train him but its a bit difficult, since he has lots of energy, it a clicker a good way to get his attention and make training better?

  • @laurkr if you take him for a walk and drain some of his energy, then try to train him it will usually work better..i have had to do this with my dog.

  • What kind of dog is this?

  • What type of treats do you use? Can I give my dog too many treats so that it will get sick?

I have a 14 week old German Shepherd and I want to start training it.

  • @eletendre1 Say if you start the dog's training at 8 weeks old, do you use the clicker for the duration of the dogs life or does the clicker gradually go away?

  • what if you want to do a trick when there far away the wont be able to hear the clicker?

  • what if someone else in the park has a clicker too won't the dogs get confuused?

  • how can you teach her between hight 5 and touch?, your basically raising the same hand and direction. how can the dog differentiate between the behaviour your looking for.

  • @josephsaliba79 The command - Touch & High five, you can use vocab with it to! Say when its touching with its hand, you can start saying "high five" once its got the idea with just the clicker, then once thats been practiced, you can learn it similar tricks such as the touching with the nose.

It can be taught in any order! Just make sure you practice both!

  • umm my dog is two years old can i still use a clicker?

  • @rsroyalpwn Yes you can.

  • Absolutely! You can start using a clicker at any age.

  • my dog is 11 months old, i've trained her with just treats. but i've been seeing a lot of better results with clicker training. so today i bought a clicker & i'm going to start today. is it ok to start at this time with the clicker ?

  • i have a unobiedient lab, he is warmed up to the clicker but if i let him outside he will just run in the other direction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to grab his collor and hull him in! its stinkin annoying!

  • @mrssummit49 your dog doesn't trust you if he is running away from you. Keep him on a leash and attach it to your waist while you do the clicker training so he knows to stay with you. Also do your training in an area with no distractions.

  • im sendiing my dog off for hunting training and i use the clicker should i bring the clicker hunting with me and reward him evry time he retrieves a bird.

  • Do you keep using the clicker when the dog is an "fully" trained adult as well?

  • You are RELLY good!!! =)

  • My dog is about 8 months old will the clicker still work for training her? Id love to know, thanx :)

  • @LBBloodyLBBabyz I got a rescue dog that was 5 years old and out of control and she's responding really well to it.

  • Hey! I have a Toy Poodle..... when I am alone, training her, she can do it,but she needs to see me have her treats. If I am with other people or my other dog, she gets distracted even if I have food, If we are alone and she sees I don't have any food, She wont mind me. What should I do?

  • @singstar3228 how often do you feed your dog? do you leave her food in the bowl all day? dogs will not respond to 'rewards' if they have a constant supply of food. Keep your dog hungry, I would suggest you feed her kibble (not treats) while you are training her so she responds better :).

  • My dogs scared of the "click" shes almost a year now and ive been training her great without one. I was going to start using it so i could speed up her frisbee training. Should I even mess with the clicker? If so how do I get her to like it?

  • if my dog understand the clicker

should i always do the click every day so he won't forget the click sound?

like, if i teach him to sit, after a mounth, he knows the sit command, so, do i must use the click sound after a year if he still knows the sit command?

or only if he forgets the tricks he used to know??

  • You don't have to use the clicker forever. If you teach your to sit now, and then have a very high rate of reinforcement, you will see your dog will not fail to respond to your cues to sit even a year later without using the clikcer. When you teach a behaviour, reinforce it highly, then it will work with distractions, and even after long periods.

  • no you shouldnt even reward after doing a command for a long time, its only when they are learning a behaviour or command

  • My dog is almost 4 years old...can I still use clicker training?

  • You can use the clicker training at any year of the dog's life. Its just harder to teach when the dog is older because the learning curve is best when its young.

  • Of course you can. What dog doesn't love treats, no matter the age?

  • I'm getting a Golden Retreiver puppy this week , thanks for your video , very impressive. And I like your style , excellent teacher. Thanks........Bill

  • You are my new hero!! :0

  • I think is better if you study what clicker training is. If you think that is for beginner trainers you're completely wrong!

  • nice job keep it up

  • to clicker train your dog does it have to be a puppy or at anny age?

  • Any pet store.

  • Where can I get a clicker?

  • petsmart, petco, etc. you can get them at almost any pet store. you can also use a Snapple bottle cap.

  • woooooohooooooooo yes !!!!!!!!!!

my dog doesnt jump on people anymore!

  • I'm gonna try this on my 2.5-yr-old chow chow. U think that'll work?

  • hi I was wondering if you are in a big open area with lots of other people and dogs, when you use the clicker you would call your dog and then click and give treat, right? How would you know for sure that your dog would come because I have called my dog before and it did not come. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix that problem?

  • At what age should you start training your dog?

  • Eight weeks old is when I start.

  • yeah, eight weeks old is when the puppies can be away form their mother

  • can i just snap my fingers instead??

  • Yes you could do that.

  • or cluck your tongue =D

  • @pinoyboxerfan08 I am a professional clicker trainer and I do not recommend that.

  • To find a professional clicker trainer in your area, call the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior (800-47-click) - Karen Pryor was one of the early pioneers of clicker training. The academy can put you in touch with top tier trainers around the world who understand the principles and practices of clicker training. There is far more to it than simply using a clicker in training!

  • wow this helped me alot. thanx a bunch

  • Thank you very much.

Will help me make my dog do tricks!

  • Your welcome.

  • I just bought a puppy Boston Terrier. I like the clicker and I intend on getting one soon. But my question is, once the dog is used to the clicker and knows the commands, should you still use the clicker or should he respond with out it?

  • hey imn getting a jack russel by the end of he year i have been doing some hard resarh will i have to get him obientent trained and puppy trained or can i use the clicker

  • This is a great video! I am getting my puppy tomorrow so i need to get a clicker i definitely understand how to use it now, another thing, how long would i have to use the clicker for?? thanks in advance!

  • Hm..

I must admit i am not a huge fan of clicker training, to me it seems just like a fad training style. After actually seeing how it is used and seeing how it works. I can see how i would use it and how it is simply another tool that can be useful for dog training.

Anyhow thanks for showing me something new :D

  • Thanks for your comment. Clickers are not a fad, dog trianers will be using them for years and years to come. They are great training tools. Good luck training!

    Eric

  • Another question. When you are "Charging" the clicker. In OB how do you prevent the dog from braking his position to come to you for the treat?

  • Are you charging the clicker or teaching the stay command?

  • It's a useful tool for training any animal. Dolphins, seals, elephants, chickens, cats hamsters.. Very widely used.

Shaping behavior by marking it with a constant audible mark.

Of course a consistent and well timed word like good, or yes will do the exact same thing.

  • Hello

Great video thanks for displaying it, Do you have to constantly use the clicker. Once the dog understands the commands you want can you leave it out.

Or do you have to constantly use it ?

  • Hi,

No, once your dog understands the command you do not have to keep using it. A lot of clicker trainers do training sessions with the clicker but you won't always need it to get your dog to do the command.

    Best,

    Eric

  • TY for providing such a great service. I find your videos really informative and well done. I am new to your videos, do you have anything one litter training your dog. I have a small type dog, I think he would do well when it snows to go inside. Thank you in advance.

  • I'm glad you like the videos. There is a lot of information on my website.

    All the best,

    Eric

  • Put your dog into a sit and tap the back of your dog's paw with your right hand. Wait until he lifts it a little. Once your dog lifts his paw even just a little, quickly reward. Keep doing that until he starts to lift it on his own. Please let me know how you make out.

    Best,

    Eric

  • how do you make your dog use his paw to touch your hand! i tried so hard and he only uses the nose!!!

  • Hi Eric, I think your videos are great, very informative and I really enjoy and learn a lot by watching them. I'd be happy to see some more posts about clicker training.

  • Thanks for your comments! I will definitely be putting together some more clicker training videos soon. Keep an eye out.

  • Hi! Great vid! Quick question - I know alot of dogs respond to visual cues as well, if not better, than vocal ones - why do you use the same hand signal for High Five and Touch? Would some of the confusion she has be lessened by using a different signal for one or the other? Perhaps palm out - fingers up for High Five, and palm out - fingers to the side and thumb tucked or something for Touch?

  • That's a great question. Dogs definitely respond better to hand signals. It's much easier for them to follow your hand than understand a word.

In this particular case, Izzi is learning "touch" to mean put her nose against something. In this video I used my hand, but she is also learning to touch a bell and whatever else that I ask her to.

    Thanks for watching!
