Sweep tapping is easier than sweep picking, you dont need hand to hand coordination.
Clearly both different styles. Neo classical progressive metal allows a lot of techniques that alexi's style doesn't. Alexi doesn't focus on the speed only, he is agressive. You say romeo is cleaner, but being clean is the counter part of alexi's rudeness. I think Alexi owns romeo, he can play easily what romeo plays as clean as he does - remember alexi studied neo classical guitar - but if you put romeo in cob, cob sucks. Romeo isn't more technical than alexi, they just have different styles.
Why are we even comparing the two? Completely different genres my dear friends, and unfortunately for all your argument sakes: Neo classical progressive metal takes a tad bit more skill then any combination of thrash, speed, melodic death and black (What they label themselves as).
Also, I am sorry not everyone can take the awkwardness of progressive metal, but this is no reason to call Romeo's music "flow-less", it has a magnificent flow which is a bit harder to enjoy.

Also Ensiferum admittedly didn't release their full length debut until 2001 but they have since released recordings that go back to around 97 and 96.
Michael = Better I love em both since alexi was my inspiriation to start working on technique and i love michael neo classical stuff, since i also play classical guitar its really good. Helps in learning scales in stuff too.
I am going with Alexi on this. They both play about the same speed, and are great with scales and arpeggios. However, Alexi throws so many more techniques into his playing. He has more emotion. He has a more unique style, and he mixes it up far more.
Ok first of all im tired of seeing Michael is cleaner than Alexi. Although this is true it has nothing to do with skill just the pickups and the effects. I do have to say Michael is more advanced and better skilled, but this does not make him better, When i hear Micheals solos i just hear fast shreading and taps that dont flow and sound boring. Alexi has more emotion and melody that you can feel rather than just hearing one note after the other.

If we judge skills we need to judge not only the speed, or all the techniques, but the way that the song takes shape, the way that every player composes his music. In that aspect alexi KILLS romeo, romeo is boring, he's one more of the neoclassical guitar players. Alexi combines everything, neoclassical, thrash, black, blues, every fucking style that can make a guitarrist a skilled player.
imo Alexi is easier to listen to and more musical, where romeo is the more technical (and faster) of these VERY technical players, you cannot forget Alexi is much more creative, and not only plays/writes his guitar tracks, but also plays/writes/sings his vocal parts, as apposed to Romeo being purely a guitarist (and sorry to mention it but he a very much a Yngwie copy cat, whereas Alexi has delved into his own style.)

Romeos technique is way more experienced. His pick attacks, everything. Laiho uses alot of legato. You can totally hear it in there solo stuff. BUt Romeo is 41 and laiho only 30.
The growl vocals come with the whole scandinavian background (its automatic) and the orchestral keyboard just makes it more neo classical and after the neo classical albums kicking out your keyboard player would just be fucking awkward.

Also Ensiferum admittedly didn't release their full length debut until 2001 but they have since released recordings that go back to around 97 and 96.

I am going with Alexi on this. They both play about the same speed, and are great with scales and arpeggios. However, Alexi throws so many more techniques into his playing. He has more emotion. He has a more unique style, and he mixes it up far more.

Ok first of all im tired of seeing Michael is cleaner than Alexi. Although this is true it has nothing to do with skill just the pickups and the effects. I do have to say Michael is more advanced and better skilled, but this does not make him better, When i hear Micheals solos i just hear fast shreading and taps that dont flow and sound boring. Alexi has more emotion and melody that you can feel rather than just hearing one note after the other.

Even though I'm not familiar to michael romero's music, he sounds alot more cleaner than Alexi. I mean Alexi can play clean and fast when he wants to, but you also have to think about technique. Michael uses alot more technique then Alexi I belive. Alexi uses alot of sweeps and tapping and whamy bar play. But Michael adds alot more to his. So even though it kills me to see my idol loose. Michael wins. But they are both very talented musicians.

If we judge skills we need to judge not only the speed, or all the techniques, but the way that the song takes shape, the way that every player composes his music. In that aspect alexi KILLS romeo, romeo is boring, he's one more of the neoclassical guitar players. Alexi combines everything, neoclassical, thrash, black, blues, every fucking style that can make a guitarrist a skilled player.

imo Alexi is easier to listen to and more musical, where romeo is the more technical (and faster) of these VERY technical players, you cannot forget Alexi is much more creative, and not only plays/writes his guitar tracks, but also plays/writes/sings his vocal parts, as apposed to Romeo being purely a guitarist (and sorry to mention it but he a very much a Yngwie copy cat, whereas Alexi has delved into his own style.)

@AsasCizal Nah. Alexi is a metal icon because his songs stick out and get stuck in your head. Also, Romeo sounds like a computer. He's too clean. It's not gritty enough, and it's not true to the metal ideal, which is nasty, dirty, and mean. Yes, being able to play fast is important, but Romeo has no soul in his playing. Anyone can become a human metronome over time, but Alexi is different because he also knows how to write heavy riffs and catchy riffs, as well as melodic riffs.

To play that precise and acurate on that level with such mindblowing riffs and odd time signatures you need to become metronom. It' called progression, and that's why they call it progressive metal. Romeos technique is way more experienced. His pick attacks, everything. Laiho uses alot of legato. You can totally hear it in there solo stuff. BUt Romeo is 41 and laiho only 30.
