The central theme of this scene is "the hat." Not that it isn't a good scene but because "the hat" never appears, it reminds me of a scene out of an 'Ed Woods' movie.
She is wanting to kill her husband, right. That is why she is over, Neff know she has no hat. He wants sex, he is a single man with one friend, keyes, and Phyllius has him under her little finger to carry out her plan, really soon to be his plan, to kill her husband and she will be rich.
wow they've only just met each other if u think about it and they are acting like they've been in love for years. on another note, i find the wife's intentions to be very obvious and i dont see how a guy like Neff could be so easily fooled by it. though he does seem to be semi-aware of what's going on.
@justanameyo I agree. As much as I love these classic movies, the dialogue seems too pat, too crisp, and too "sudden" to quite believe, but the pace does move one on along.
This is my second favorite movie -- PERIOD! It's flawless and hits you right in the kisser. (1st place goes to "Vertigo" and 2nd to "Touch of Evil," just to show it's in stellar company).
This is my 2nd favorite noir... Fred and Babs are great together, and Raymond Chandler's and Billy Wilder's script is phenomenal... what else can I say, this movie is just SO GOOD!
I would not resist Fred MacMurry at any moment. So many "modern" audiences try to find things to call "unrealistic" in old movies. Its funny because I think that the kissing and or sex in new movies is way over the top "un-realistic"
@celtickimba I think that romance is depicted unrealistically in most movies, whether they're from the 40's or 2000's. We all crave that "perfect" romance, and to envision ourselves in the place of the characters...well, that's why we watch movies :)
@celtickimba I agree. And they're too graphic. You don't see any sex between these two and it's hotter than watching two folks go at it in modern movies. I love language and the dialogue is smoking.

I'm sure this is a great film, but - and please don't get annoyed with me Double Indemnity fans - is it really that realistic that he would choose to kiss her at that moment suddenly, just like that, and she wouldn't resist?
My favourite film. People in films talk rubbish about voice-overs, saying they're a lazy short-cut. They make this film and shuld have been used in the films of Raymond Chandler's books, Farewell My Lovely and the rest. Great as Bogart was, his Chandler films were hopeless without Chandler's wonderful asides.

@48, her right hand is in her pocket. Her left hand is empty. Where's his hat?

@Mulder25j That is the point, that is the excuse for her being there.

@theelk74 ,
She rang the doorbell and said, "You left your hat at my place this afternoon. Do you want me to bring it in?"
Yet, she's empty handed. Where is his hat? Still at her house?

I'd say that her only worry was that he would not rise to her sweater-clad bait.
