at least hes teaching, we need more teachers in this world... the reason he's a good teacher is the same reason he'd rather be at a science meeting, than teaching, his passion for science, but the fact is he does teach, people are allowed their pleasures, who r u to be so critical? are u a university professor?

Your argument is not valid. Saying that we don't have enough teachers is a cop out - the teachers need to be good in order to justify their existence - especially at an elite university like UCLA.

It would be pretty stupid to justify hiring a bunch of doctors who never went to medical school simply because we "need more doctors."

Furthermore, even if he DOES prefer to attend a science meeting, he discourages his students from attending class by explicitly stating that.

Why would he say he drew the "short straw"? That's offensive to all the students who decided to take the class. If he hates teaching so much, he shouldn't be a professor.
