Several papers were published in American medical journals between 1880 and 1960 claiming that female circumcision would cure all kinds of problems, from irritation, smegma, masturbation, etc. Many female circumcisions were performed in the mid-west during that time. It was covered under Blue Cross Insurance until 1977, and legal until 1996.

Doctors cannot claim the moral highground in opposing female circumcision while simultaneously permitting the genital cutting of unconsenting male newborns.
