After the pentium and the Xenon, Intel created the Core 2Duo and the iSeries (i3,i5,i7), to lines of processors that are good at one thing, and that's power management. As IBM progressed, it was making great processors, but they eat up electricity (1/2 as much performance per watt as the Intel processors) and because Apple sells most of it's machines as laptops, power management is a big problem.
It's sad to think 15 years later never came...

Slow...search for they server CPU, the Power 6 and the Power 7...they laugh at the performance of the Intel CPUs...

They switched because of the heat and the power. Look at the power amount of a G5 and then of a Dual core Intel...
