When both candidates are owned by the same corporate interests is there really a choice? When we elect candidates based on promises and when in office they do the exact opposite of what they promised can we still call it a democracy? When politicians, corporations and law enforcement don't have to obey the same laws they impose on us can we still call it a republic? When we are constantly told what to do and what not to do can we still call ourselves free?
Very little of this ongoing occupation ( I hesitate to call it "war") has been funded by taxes. Most of our tax intake now just goes to cover the interest on the national debt. Afghanistan/Pakistan and Iraq have been funded by treasury bond sales to foreign nations.
In short, we are funding the insane interventionist Bush doctrine with borrowed money. Does this sound like a good idea?
Wow, what alternate universe are you living in? The stimulus hasn't done anything to help the private sector, or the middle class. How can taxes be cut when the budget deficit is over 2 trillion dollars per anum now? This is just complete lunacy and more people are realizing it everyday.
"Here is a quick question..Does the Government subsidize the public option to lower the cost for people paying for the insurance?"
Well here's a quick answer. Any time the government subsidizes anything, insurance, farms, education, or cars, the costs always increase. If enough people couldn't afford something, the price would come down to a point where more people could buy. That's a free market. Government subsidy only serves corp interests to sell above market rates hurting consumers.
Its because this country has a foundation of libertarianism. We value freedom and liberty over safety and feel we are strong enough to take care of ourselves and not to steal from the people who can for the people who can't it won't.
I want health care available to all as well, but this man has some good points. The main point he has is that there is little or no difference between the Democans and the Republicrats. The US is just like the Soviet Union, we have a one party system of government. I am curious how the poor and lower middle class would be responsible for their health care when they cannot even afford any.
If we get healthcare reform and availibility to all it will be a miracle.
When i go abroad and I''m asked why the USA won't become a socialist nation as they are. It easily just tell them to shove their socialism up their as.
So you can go to a socialist country and stay if you don't like it here.
Oh how the tide has turned, we can now say to you " If you dont like how the country is being run, go someplace else" Please, go someplace that you might like better than the USA.
Cenk, You make great money. I'm sure more than the 30K average Americans make each year.. Why not start a "Turk" or w/e lobbying group and spend money for your agenda.. besides... if healthcare is only 17% of our GDP, then that leaves another 83% out there.. get supporters and lobby these dusche bags.. btw.. I'm not in favor.. but sounds you and alot of your listeners are.. so get off ur asses and do something other than whine about it.. good clip, thanks
you diddn't read what I wrote.. I said Supporters.. which means.. more than one. meaning if he was able to gain 100 bucks from 1/3 of the entire American population that alone would be enough to get a start.. or are there not that many who wish to get this passed?.. Money talks.. unless you're a Republican toting guns around the president.. Think and dont speak..
Money does talk. I agree. And how should they spemnd this money? should they go to senator max baucus, head of the senate finance committe, and say "max, stop taking millions from the insurqance industry- take OUR millions instead?"
We are listening- we are listening to right wing idiots unwittingly work on behalf of the insurance and pharmaceutical industries to their own detriment.
Didn't you hear the one old man scream about how he hates the govt and the govt better stay away from his medicare?
These people are UNINFORMED TOOLS of right wing hate radio- taking orders mindlessly from their leaders limbaugh and becker.
You are a complete and total MORON to believe "Ugh! Nurr! Radio-taking orders! NURRR!" when people are actually READING the bills unlike YOU! Yeah, all you did was read the words "Free healthcare" and squealed like a retard, saying to yourself "NUUURRR! I don't need to read any further!"
People deserve to listen to anything they want. Quit bitching about other people's First Amendment Rights, because it's making you look even MORE retarded, if that's even possible! LOL!
People deserve to listen to anything they want- and we, as a representational republic, deserve that those people will be trained, intellectually, to be able to decipher bullshit from discourse.
They aren't.
You have not read thousands of pages of bills, and it's disingenuous of you to suggest or imply that you are somehow informed.
People like you listen to rush and glenn, you hear their lies, on behalf of insurance and big pharma, and you mindlessly believe them.
You are a stark-raving moron. Big pharma SUPPORTS Obamacare!
And just because YOU don't like what Glenn says doesn't actually mean he's telling lies. You simply fear the light of truth.
And yes, i did read the first version of the house bill. Did you know they went back to using the words "mentally retarded" when referring to people with Downs syndrome? LOL! Funny how you leftards think being the PC sheriff somehow gives you license to talk like that. Hahaha!
I fear the light of truth? LOLOLOL. that's a good one.
I also enjoy the way you call names instead of engaging in serious discourse. Typical right wing tactics today- we have nothing to say, so we will say it LOUDLY and be very insulting about it!!!
Big pharma supports keeping their profits huge, and keeping americans from being able to import cheaper drugs.
Period.
We should ALL be fighting them. But, for some reason, you want to work for them.
btw the war at this point is sitting around 980Billion.. not multi trillions.. maybe final bennift packages included would push it over.. but bush spent more in his last 6 months of his presidency than the other 7.6 years so..
the final cost of the war will be several trillion dollars- after all the healthcare for the vets is paid for.
I don't need to wait until it hits that number to recognize that will be the final cost.
The fact that the right doesn't bitch about this atrocious, murderous waste of money makes all their other anti-debt and fiscal responsibility arguments look like so much partisan blather.
They LOVE spending money- but only on war, not to help the poor.
You prove your idiocy with each comment you make. You call me ignorant, but I was the one informing YOU about the original house draft of the healthcare bill, because I READ it!
Perhaps the word "ignorant" is just another blanket epithet for dumbass leftists like you, but believe it or not, it actually has a meaning. And now that you've shown me that you know what "dictionary" means, you should be capable of looking it up.
yes- dumbasses like us who have a sense of history and know that YOU are on the wrong side. Healthcare reform will pass- whether it takes one or twenty years (hell, we've been waiting since truman, we can wait a little longer).
Healthcare, like voting and education, should be a right of every citizen. I know you disagree, but I think more people see it my way.
Time will tell.
Meanwhile, keep screaming socialism and scaring people away from your ideology.
those citizens are free to practice their rights to speech as CITIZENS.
corporations do not vote- a corporation deserves no voice in a representational republic.
We've had warning after warning about corporate dominance and the danger it poses to our republic- jefferson, washington, lincoln, eisenhower, paine, etc, etc, etc.
We just don't seem to be heading any of those warnings.
Corporate free speech is a scam designed by corporate lawyers who sit around all day crapping on our constitution
A corporation does not have a right as a person to vote and if you talking about lobbying then maybe we need to look at the money that is given to fund campaigns and such. But when you talk about stopping the right to free speech of a corporation you are actually talking about citizens because corporations are made of citizens. so which person do you want to squelch and how are you gonna decide when to allow and not allow his free speech?
not true. when I talk about stopping the created, unconstitutional rights of a state created entity, that has NOTHING to do with the speech of CITIZENS.
The people that work at microsoft have all the rights guaranteed under the consitution.
Microsoft itself, as a state created entity meant to limit financial liability, has no place in the political process (ideally).
Why you cannot distinguish between the people working at a company and the company itself is beyond me.
A corporation is a contract among co-owners under rules set by government. The shareholders own rights to the property. To limit the rights of the corporation is to limit the rights of the owners. As human beings, the owners have natural rights, and these human rights extend to any contract they create.
Unfortunately for you, the 10th Amendment applies to this, because if something is not mentioned, the federal government has no power over it.
I don't think you understand the purpose of corporations. They are entities created and sanctioned BY THE STATE to protect people from FINANCIAL liability.
That's it. That's all they are.
Corporations have one interest and one interest alone- maximizing profit.
CITIZENS of a republic have MANY varied interests- war, peace, economics, education, abortion, media, etc, etc, etc.
To allow a state sanctioned entity created for economic protection to be treated the same as citizens is INSANE.
See you dont understand that its the STATE that is the problem and not the corporations. If the state stop giving powers to the corporation and IF WE stopped allowing the STATE to take those powers we would be ok.
Well, who runs our education system? It is the citizens responsibility to inform themselves. But where you might preach about how corporations run and control their lives, I would say that the government does the same thing with excess taxes and control. The more I comment here the more I realize that we all want the same thing. We just dont agree on who the major problem is.
I realize something that seems obvious, but apparently, is relatively profound.
Here goes: it doesn't matter if the govt or private sector is running the show. The primary factor that determines the health and sustainability of any society with a representational government is the education level of the citizenry.
This is so true that I would be better off in a socialist state with smart people than a capitalist one with idiots.
I like this statement. You would rather have educated "slaves to the state," than free uneducated citizens. I think a life of liberty is essential to the pursuit of happiness and a lack of liberty is unacceptable regardless of education status.
-I don't believe such a thing is possible. It's like Jefferson said, and this might be his best quote, "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be"
I think you undervalue education, and overvalue your free-market ideology- which, by the way, DOESN'T EVEN WORK unless you have educated citizens.
What was more free than a family crossing the plains of the unsettled united states and cultivating the land with no one in proximity for 200 hundred miles? No education needed in this situation. Now, to limit a Government and keep it out of the lives and pockets of it citizens, I 100% believe that we need an educated populace. But a socialist society defeats that purpose cause they are not working for liberty they are working to collective good. Defeats the point Jefferson was trying to make.
"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government." TJ
That's a nice quotation. Jefferson had too many though, and anybody with an agenda can grab a jefferson quote to suit their needs.
I am not pro big government. I've read 1984 and it scared the shit out of me. However, what I don't understand about the right is that they ONLY see the threat to liberty coming from big government, when it has and can come from big business as well.
I think when we discuss the core philosophy of Thomas Jefferson, that it simply has to involve the institution of education. Jefferson was our greatest intellectual, and understood how central education was.
I have seen dozens of quotes from Jefferson discussing the CRUCIAL importance of an educated citizenry. This is my favorite one : if a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.
And all you socialist speak about how horrible and powerful corporations are. Well, if they are as strong as you say there is not a goddamn thing you can do about it. The Government has been in bed with them since they were created. Gving the government more powers to regulate them just so they can control YOU more and give more lei-way to the corporations is futile and dumb.
I'm glad Ralph Nader didn't feel that way. He has saved millions of lives and forced corporation after corporation to change their behavior.
I think we CAN change the way business is done in the USA- it will just take an education revolution to wake people up.
Here is why the govt needs to regulate- the govt has SOME accountability- through elections- CEO's really don't have any- the shareholders have been effectively removed as a check on power.
Corporations are nothing but friends of the State that are allowed to develop monopolies thru that friendship. Its the innate corruption of government that allows companies to control the populace. Virgina Company in the colonial era is just one example of how corporations gain control through the govt. If the govt. was kept small and limited in power corporations would lack the control that it does.
I could easily discuss the inate corruption of the profit motive and display an air tight history of corporate malfeasance that would leave me asking you this question: why do you trust the private sector at all? Are you aware of the history?
I know that we (americans) grow up corporate- so it's in vogue to hate unions and tree huggers, but rarely question the big corporations.
Try listening to the meters jam Chicken Strut and writing something coherent at the same time :)
You are talking about profits and I think any sane or rational person would say that profits are secondary to POWER. Power facilitates corruption more so than profits and if we could find a way to keep corruption out we could allow competition to nullify profits.
"now we have 6 companies controlling 95% of our media.
what the hell kind of representational republic can you possibly have without an independent media free from the conflicts of power???"
Amazing. All this under the watchful eye and the rules and regulations of The FCC. And now we have a new truly free and independent source of information exchange and the first thing our government wants to do is regulate that. You can't have it both ways. It's the government that got us here.
Regulation does do something. It helps destroy the 1st Amendments free speech. Take the regulation called The Fairness Doctrine. It states that if a station aired some political content, they would also have to give equal time to an opposing view. Complaints were answered with government people with stopwatches. This served two purposes. It cut into station content and advertizing money and to avoid fines stations just stopped airing controversial content destroying the right of free speech.
any student of democratic republics understand that the media is a CENTRAL and CRUCIAL entity, and that if it becomes consolidated into the hands of the powerful, eras of mass corruption will ensue.
For our system to work, the people must be educated and informed. Today, they are neither (generally speaking of course).
We need to break up the corporate media giants- or we need to become comfortable with oligarchy and lack of representation. Those are the choices we face today.
But it's the free market that will break them up. My point about the FCC is that it's big corporate medai that contributes to politicians that in turn appoint the FCC's personel. Who do you then expect the FCC to help? Media is more controlled than you think. However, with the internet, news is free to transmit to anyone instantly. The trick will be to keep the governemnt from regulating the internet. As small channels rise through the free internet, big corps will get smaller.
how will the free market break them up? please be specific and explain that statement.
Thanks!
Also, the internet is great; but it lacks the investigative aspect that we rely on traditional media for. How many websites have foreign correspondents or even white house or congressional correspondents?
We desperately need INVESTIGATIVE journalism in the USA today. Without it, we are done for.
The great thing about the internet is anyone and everyone can participate and send it around the world. Everyone is an on the spot reporter. We would never have had the impact if the Iranian demonstrator who was shot wasn't put on the internet. Or many of the town hall meetings wouldn't have changed the debate of health care. Or Van Jones resigning. OR a million other things that mainstream media can't or won't cover. The investigators can't investigate if they are not given a starting point.
sorry man, I don't think joe six-pack with a camera phone can replace the investigative journalism we require for our republic to function properly- and clearly, corporate media consolidation repesents a fatal threat to the media establishment.
In the future, the internet might begin doing serious, in-DEPTH journalism, but as of today, they don't.
As for free markets preventing monopolies. Only government regulation can create a monopoly. Without it, any company can sring up to produce a better an cheaper product. Take the classic example. The breakup of Standard Oil in 1911. Around 1895, Standard had about 95% of market share. That's as close to monopoly as it gets in a free market. It took the goverment 21 years since the inception of the anti trust laws to break it up. However, at the time of the break up Standard share was down to 61%
The free market competitors were taking a huge chunk out of Standards margin and market share all without government. Take the break up of ATT. Ma Bell had a vertual lock on phone business. Left alone the cell phone and cable and internet industries would have crushed ATT all without any government involvement. The break up allowed the baby bells to compete in all areas. In effect, it's the government that creates monopolies and protects big corporate monopolies from competitors.
I'll assume the question because you think of Walmart as a monopoly? Walmart as of last quarter has only an 11.3% market share of retail stores. Hardly a monopoly. However, Walmart could not have achieved it's current size without government help. Be it tax credits, labor credits, opening in depressed zones, or reduced ratables. But the biggest boost to Walmart has to be through government allowed and regulated trade with China. Not too many companies are allowed this market.
you're right actually, govt has helped walmart very much.
however, when I drive across this country and see every town looking pretty much the same, it makes me sad. Homogenization is an awful consequence of our market driven society.
Every corner has a mcdonalds, starbucks, subway and walmart.
I think that sucks, but that is just an opinion. Maybe some people enjoy a lack of diversity.
I would love to hear one maybe two examples of this so I can go research corporations and why so many people don't believe its the government that cause this. I believe that limited government and competition eliminates these problems. And I would propose how do you control large multinational corporations that are more powerful than governments?
corporate malfeasance- where to begin. There's the contemporary stuff- enron, worldcomm, AIG... we can talk about tobacco companies and what they did to continue killing americans for decades... or how about general motors..buying up all the trolley cars so they could destroy public trans- now we all sit in traffic- yeah!
Have you studied the gilded age- an era of especially ubiquitous corruption following the civil war.
Hehehe! In your statement railing against corporatism, you have actually spoken FOR the virtue of CAPITALISM! Haaahahahaha! Don't worry. I don't know who your friends are, so you don't have to suffer sleepless nights wondering if I'll tell them! LOL!
"those citizens are free to practice their rights to speech as CITIZENS.
corporations do not vote- a corporation deserves no voice in a representational republic."
And I'll point out that unions deserve no more rights than that!
What have you been smoking? I don't see how my railing against the nonsense that corporations ought to have the same protections granted to citizens, including protection and freedom of speech, has ANYTHING to do with me endorsing capitalism- which I do NOT.
First off, its not health care reform, its government taking over healthcare. my point is, I shouldn’t have to pay for someone elses health care when I don’t have any control or input over their well being. Should you pay for my health care when I eat out every day and drink and smoke? I pay for my inceance, which I control with eating right, not smoking, and exercising. You think education should be a right. Then I want to be a doctor, and I want you to pay for it.
@hint0122 "communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets that life is social"-MLK.
You are clearly a capitalist, and by your rhetoric, I judge that you have forgotten that life is SOCIAL. We live in a society. When everyone in the society is well educated, that benefits YOU
It is in YOUR selfish interest to see that our society is as well educated as possible
The same goes for health. It is in YOUR interest to help make sure everyone is as healthy as possible
what are you talking about? yes I am a capitalist since I like having and spending my money that i work for. not everyone in society needs to be well educated. should a janitor have a BA? should a dishwasher have a masters? When too many people have degrees and not the jobs to use them, you get nothing. It is not in my best Interest because we live in FREE society, where everyone has freedoms. I don’t care how fat you are, if you smoke or drink, nor should you care how fat I am.
@hint0122 "not everyone in society needs to be well educated" Really? How then is that janitor supposed to be an informed voter if he doesn't know history? Even a janitor is a voter in a system of representative government with near universal voting rights.
Should a dishwasher be uneducated?
Again, how would he be able to perform his civic duties, in a representative republic, without knowing any history?
Our system depends entirely on an informed, educated electorate- that's why it's broken
It's not about the LEVEL of education a person achieves-but what knowledge and understanding they receive. For a person to be an informed voter, the more history and political science they understand, the easier the job will be.
Ideally, we wouldn't even need kids to go to college to get this info- which SHOULD be taught in our k-12 system.
It isn't- to any acceptable degree.
Here is what Jefferson said:
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.
@hint0122 we would be able to look at the results and see that people are making informed decisions, just like today, we can see. clearly, that people are NOT well informed, and poll after poll conveys this ubiquitous ignorance.
I am NOT trying to brainwash everyone to be a leftist. I believe many conservatives would remain conservative, even if they studied. I just want people to be able to BACK UP their opinions with solid history and knowledge.
why not just laissez faire the entire system have gov stop taxing whatever there taxing to pay for anything at all in the system
then put it onto the states to regulate if state C wants singlepayer let it if state dumbass wants wants a laissez fair system then let them burn themselves
Look, I agree that all Americans should have a decent health care plan, but this Obama plan was never that plan. Republicans and Democrats need to sit down and come up with a plan that offers health plans to all Americans, but does not let the fucking Government come in and control Americans either.
Native Americans are the poorest in this country and depend heavly on Gov hand outs. We have Gov run health care and it's free, well free for us some one is paying for it. And we have all ways been bankrupt.
Fuck bipartisanship! Both faces of the Fascist party agreeing with itself that the people should be milked for all they are worth!
Only cross-eyed nazis support "bipartisanship". Let's never do it, you moronic Young Turds. How pathetic that this bleating for fascism is considered "alternative media". ...LOL
Why would anyone want bipartisanship? Competitive belligerence is how the 2 parties keep each other in check. If there was bipartisanship, it would amount to collusion against the people.
this guy is such a dumbfuck, right now is the WORST time to do it!!! Lieberman is right, we gotta wait, if they don't they will just pass a half-assed peice of shit healthcare bill!
Both RNC/DNC are crap there the top of the pile corruption and there not that much different from each other, just minipulate and deceive in the public from different angles and argue lost causes, point figures instead of rashionally going through problems for sensible answers.
This show here....you might as well but on the mainstream media, just feeding of it anyway.(insanity)
Theres no such thing as bi-partisanship simply because of the media dividing us apart.
If we don't give these emotional minipulating mainstream media channels ratings, soon enough everyone will be able to handle seeing through the politicians. If we could communicate as "We the people" WE WILL BE ABLE TO DEBATE RASHIONALLY.
All the media is out there for is to distract you and all they do is marginalize the people with sensible solutions like Ron Paul, Nader
You fucking Democrats think you're going to ram what you want into Law .. seomthing as important as this... and make us slaves to people who wont pay for themselves.
Bipartisan is not a scam if both parties work in good faith and for the common good of the people and not their own political power and the special interest that bankroll them................ha ha ha ha ha ha. Yea politicians are a scam.
That is the problem and the Dems are idiots trying to work with the GOP.
there is no such thing as a christian conservative. Christ taught peace ,love, and giving.Conservatives practice hate, selfishness, and cruelty. so to all who post here which one are you? a giving christian or a vile conservative?.....you can't be both!
I think it has something to do with christianity being about shunning materialism- and clearly, rich people have not done that.
In essence though, it's about control. Christianity controls poor people, preventing revolutions, by promising them that the evil rich will be punished, while they "shall inherit the earth".
lol nevermind, long story short...Joe Liberman is a snake. like most politicians...so hes not really special at all. I guess i took the long way around that one.
all liberman said was (and this isn't a real quote) "we've just spent a bunch of money, why don't we wait until we have some more to spend, before we spend more" what part of that is outrageous AT ALL!?
You're talking about Joe Liberman...he waits on the fence to see which side is winning and then jumps on that bandwagon. He has no ethics or morals of his own, he sold out his own party to join McCain in the hopes of being VP...yeah, McCain didnt even trust him enough, then they lost...leaving Joe to crawl back to Washington asking for forgiveness, nobody, from either party trusts him...nor should they.
What are you talking about? Sen. Liberman didn't leave the Democratic party to become Sen. McCain's VP. He left because the DNC stabbed him in the back during his re-election bid. He then ran as an Independent and won re-election.
I said he left in hopes of being the VP, he thought his friend John would just pick him cuz they're buddies. Yeah well he didnt, so he went independent cuz NIETHER party wanted anything to do with him.
Yes you said that, and you are both factually and historically incorrect. The DNC sided with his opponent during his Senatorial primary, in no small part because he didn't shift with the DNC when they decided it was more politically advantageous to oppose the war they were in favor of when that was the politically advantageous stance. He went Independent because he had to, as the Democratic slot was taken by Ned Lamont.
"Bipartisanism" is only possible when the idea for a bill, etc. doesn't conflict with the core-values of either party. Otherwise, one side is a sell-out.
the conflicting issue is how they choose to define those "core-values," which is to say they define a greater slice of public opinion with minutia and shit than they do with vital, fundamental differences in political philosophy.
Bipartisanship is indeed impossible at this point-- because the Democrats are the only ones making concessions, and until the insurance companies stop making contributions to Senators campaigns, the public option won't get passed. I am a Connecticut Democrat (currently too young to vote), and Lieberman has lost a LOT of support here. The only constituents he has who like him are the Republicans. I will be voting against him in 2012 unless he seriously changes his tune.
lose their homes and their pensions, Goldman Sachs and these criminals are rolling around in cash because Obama and Bush has stolen YOUR tax money.
Tax money that could be used to insure the uninsured without impacting existing-plans.
Tax money that could be used to improve public education.
Tax money that can save Social Security.
Do you want to know what the scam is? The way we are polarized to fight amongst ourselves, instead of protesting the super-rich, while we all rot in hell.
Look at the bottom "Drone kills 10 in Pakistan". This has been a scam that is just an extension of Bush policy. And how much money does this war for the Caspian Sea to finance USA/European and Russian oligarch's cost?
THEY COST THE POSSIBILITY OF PROVIDING HEALTH CARE FOR PEOPLE THAT NEED IT!
This Bush/Obama bolstering of billionaire bankers/CEO's is a financial holocaust. While inner-city students are deprived of education, while hard working middle-class citizens....
"Bipartisanship Is A Scam". For once, something I can agree with a democrat about. Bipartisanship is bullshit, John McCain is not a maverick; he's a spineless, backstabbing dipshit. You know we hate your ideals- we know you hate ours. Let's cut the fucking crap for once.
It's not so much the health care industry, what the real problem is nowadays is over reaching Corporate Power. When big corporations own both sides, than what is the point of voting ? The corporations just get their way anyway. Democracy is dieing. crupt corporations are fucking over the whole country.
you wanna talk about the civil rights movement being done in steps, Lieberman, let's talk. Let's talk about how we still don't have equality, or how the reason it had to be done in steps was because of people (especially politicians) wanting to hold onto their power by denying others the same rights they, themselves enjoyed.
please, let's talk about that
or would you rather talk about how the -GoP- wrecks the budget every time they're in office, or how heath care costs are choking the economy?
The Young Communist.....I can't stand this guy or most liberals to be totally honest. The enemies of democracy and freedom and the enemies of the constitution. See you in hell someday liberal cowards!....god I love twisting heads of libs.
lieberman is a moron,he is full of shit, forget the republicans, leave them in the dust, fuck bipartisanship,if your not part of the solution, your part of the problem.
I say they pass it with the 51 vote nuclear option. Or else we will be waiting another 50 years to find out that, once again, private health insurance doesn't work when left to their own devices.
Whether for or against, they are bought and paid for by someone.(no matter what party_..Big pharma is on board and doing ads...Big insurance also.. They will only do what lines their pockets by their handlers..you are a bit naive to think it is only the repubs...Ha...Bet you think the war is over too....Hmmm and who all funded that along with the repubs, even though they made a show about it when Bushy was in..Health too will be looted and we will all get dog biscuits from our elite masters.
Its because this country has a foundation of libertarianism. We value freedom and liberty over safety and feel we are strong enough to take care of ourselves and not to steal from the people who can for the people who can't it won't.

I want health care available to all as well, but this man has some good points. The main point he has is that there is little or no difference between the Democans and the Republicrats. The US is just like the Soviet Union, we have a one party system of government. I am curious how the poor and lower middle class would be responsible for their health care when they cannot even afford any.
If we get healthcare reform and availibility to all it will be a miracle.

People deserve to listen to anything they want- and we, as a representational republic, deserve that those people will be trained, intellectually, to be able to decipher bullshit from discourse.
They aren't.
You have not read thousands of pages of bills, and it's disingenuous of you to suggest or imply that you are somehow informed.

where does it say that corporations have free speech rights?
can you show me where it says that in the constitution?
thanks.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
The corporations are made up of citizens. End of story.
Orionx26 2 years ago
those citizens are free to practice their rights to speech as CITIZENS.
corporations do not vote- a corporation deserves no voice in a representational republic.
We've had warning after warning about corporate dominance and the danger it poses to our republic- jefferson, washington, lincoln, eisenhower, paine, etc, etc, etc.
We just don't seem to be heading any of those warnings.
Corporate free speech is a scam designed by corporate lawyers who sit around all day crapping on our constitution
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
A corporation does not have a right as a person to vote and if you talking about lobbying then maybe we need to look at the money that is given to fund campaigns and such. But when you talk about stopping the right to free speech of a corporation you are actually talking about citizens because corporations are made of citizens. so which person do you want to squelch and how are you gonna decide when to allow and not allow his free speech?
Orionx26 2 years ago
not true. when I talk about stopping the created, unconstitutional rights of a state created entity, that has NOTHING to do with the speech of CITIZENS.
The people that work at microsoft have all the rights guaranteed under the consitution.
Microsoft itself, as a state created entity meant to limit financial liability, has no place in the political process (ideally).
Why you cannot distinguish between the people working at a company and the company itself is beyond me.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
A corporation is a contract among co-owners under rules set by government. The shareholders own rights to the property. To limit the rights of the corporation is to limit the rights of the owners. As human beings, the owners have natural rights, and these human rights extend to any contract they create.
Unfortunately for you, the 10th Amendment applies to this, because if something is not mentioned, the federal government has no power over it.
QuartuvLarry 2 years ago
I don't think you understand the purpose of corporations. They are entities created and sanctioned BY THE STATE to protect people from FINANCIAL liability.
That's it. That's all they are.
Corporations have one interest and one interest alone- maximizing profit.
CITIZENS of a republic have MANY varied interests- war, peace, economics, education, abortion, media, etc, etc, etc.
To allow a state sanctioned entity created for economic protection to be treated the same as citizens is INSANE.
love!
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
See you dont understand that its the STATE that is the problem and not the corporations. If the state stop giving powers to the corporation and IF WE stopped allowing the STATE to take those powers we would be ok.
Orionx26 2 years ago
I disagree. I think the CITIZENS are the problem.
I will try to explain. First, if you don't have a reasonably well educated population, then you will have mass corruption.
Jefferson said it best- if a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.
I have no problem tracing 95% of our nation's problems, including the lack of representation, to our broken education (indoctrination) system.
I have addressed the root of the problem.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
Well, who runs our education system? It is the citizens responsibility to inform themselves. But where you might preach about how corporations run and control their lives, I would say that the government does the same thing with excess taxes and control. The more I comment here the more I realize that we all want the same thing. We just dont agree on who the major problem is.
Orionx26 2 years ago
I realize something that seems obvious, but apparently, is relatively profound.
Here goes: it doesn't matter if the govt or private sector is running the show. The primary factor that determines the health and sustainability of any society with a representational government is the education level of the citizenry.
This is so true that I would be better off in a socialist state with smart people than a capitalist one with idiots.
I call this philosophy- educationalism.
patent pending
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
I like this statement. You would rather have educated "slaves to the state," than free uneducated citizens. I think a life of liberty is essential to the pursuit of happiness and a lack of liberty is unacceptable regardless of education status.
Orionx26 2 years ago
"free uneducated citizens"
-I don't believe such a thing is possible. It's like Jefferson said, and this might be his best quote, "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be"
I think you undervalue education, and overvalue your free-market ideology- which, by the way, DOESN'T EVEN WORK unless you have educated citizens.
I hope you see this rather profound irony.
Have a nice day.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
What was more free than a family crossing the plains of the unsettled united states and cultivating the land with no one in proximity for 200 hundred miles? No education needed in this situation. Now, to limit a Government and keep it out of the lives and pockets of it citizens, I 100% believe that we need an educated populace. But a socialist society defeats that purpose cause they are not working for liberty they are working to collective good. Defeats the point Jefferson was trying to make.
Orionx26 2 years ago
I disagree.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government." TJ
Orionx26 2 years ago
That's a nice quotation. Jefferson had too many though, and anybody with an agenda can grab a jefferson quote to suit their needs.
I am not pro big government. I've read 1984 and it scared the shit out of me. However, what I don't understand about the right is that they ONLY see the threat to liberty coming from big government, when it has and can come from big business as well.
I'm just looking for a little consistency.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago 2
" That's a nice quotation. Jefferson had too many though, and anybody with an agenda can grab a Jefferson quote to suit their needs."
Do you really think this wasn't his core philosophy? This man was born after the West Indian Company?
Orionx26 2 years ago
I think when we discuss the core philosophy of Thomas Jefferson, that it simply has to involve the institution of education. Jefferson was our greatest intellectual, and understood how central education was.
I have seen dozens of quotes from Jefferson discussing the CRUCIAL importance of an educated citizenry. This is my favorite one : if a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.
Have a great day!

Orionx26 2 years ago
I'm glad Ralph Nader didn't feel that way. He has saved millions of lives and forced corporation after corporation to change their behavior.
I think we CAN change the way business is done in the USA- it will just take an education revolution to wake people up.
Here is why the govt needs to regulate- the govt has SOME accountability- through elections- CEO's really don't have any- the shareholders have been effectively removed as a check on power.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
Corporations are nothing but friends of the State that are allowed to develop monopolies thru that friendship. Its the innate corruption of government that allows companies to control the populace. Virgina Company in the colonial era is just one example of how corporations gain control through the govt. If the govt. was kept small and limited in power corporations would lack the control that it does.
Orionx26 2 years ago
I could easily discuss the inate corruption of the profit motive and display an air tight history of corporate malfeasance that would leave me asking you this question: why do you trust the private sector at all? Are you aware of the history?
I know that we (americans) grow up corporate- so it's in vogue to hate unions and tree huggers, but rarely question the big corporations.
Try listening to the meters jam Chicken Strut and writing something coherent at the same time :)
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
You are talking about profits and I think any sane or rational person would say that profits are secondary to POWER. Power facilitates corruption more so than profits and if we could find a way to keep corruption out we could allow competition to nullify profits.
Orionx26 2 years ago
competition always has a winner. that winner always consolidates power and then becomes too powerful.
it keeps happening over and over and over in industry after industry.
now we have 6 companies controlling 95% of our media.
what the hell kind of representational republic can you possibly have without an independent media free from the conflicts of power???
Aristotle was right- democracy leads to oligarchy leads to tyranny.
These things are cyclical and repeat
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
"now we have 6 companies controlling 95% of our media.
what the hell kind of representational republic can you possibly have without an independent media free from the conflicts of power???"
Amazing. All this under the watchful eye and the rules and regulations of The FCC. And now we have a new truly free and independent source of information exchange and the first thing our government wants to do is regulate that. You can't have it both ways. It's the government that got us here.
mickeysears 2 years ago
well, when the FCC is working FOR the telecomm giants and AGAINST the clear wishes of the public- regulation doesn't do SHIT.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
Regulation does do something. It helps destroy the 1st Amendments free speech. Take the regulation called The Fairness Doctrine. It states that if a station aired some political content, they would also have to give equal time to an opposing view. Complaints were answered with government people with stopwatches. This served two purposes. It cut into station content and advertizing money and to avoid fines stations just stopped airing controversial content destroying the right of free speech.
mickeysears 2 years ago
any student of democratic republics understand that the media is a CENTRAL and CRUCIAL entity, and that if it becomes consolidated into the hands of the powerful, eras of mass corruption will ensue.
For our system to work, the people must be educated and informed. Today, they are neither (generally speaking of course).
We need to break up the corporate media giants- or we need to become comfortable with oligarchy and lack of representation. Those are the choices we face today.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
But it's the free market that will break them up. My point about the FCC is that it's big corporate medai that contributes to politicians that in turn appoint the FCC's personel. Who do you then expect the FCC to help? Media is more controlled than you think. However, with the internet, news is free to transmit to anyone instantly. The trick will be to keep the governemnt from regulating the internet. As small channels rise through the free internet, big corps will get smaller.
mickeysears 2 years ago
how will the free market break them up? please be specific and explain that statement.
Thanks!
Also, the internet is great; but it lacks the investigative aspect that we rely on traditional media for. How many websites have foreign correspondents or even white house or congressional correspondents?
We desperately need INVESTIGATIVE journalism in the USA today. Without it, we are done for.
Life is still the best.
viva montaigne and cervantes!!!
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
The great thing about the internet is anyone and everyone can participate and send it around the world. Everyone is an on the spot reporter. We would never have had the impact if the Iranian demonstrator who was shot wasn't put on the internet. Or many of the town hall meetings wouldn't have changed the debate of health care. Or Van Jones resigning. OR a million other things that mainstream media can't or won't cover. The investigators can't investigate if they are not given a starting point.
mickeysears 2 years ago
sorry man, I don't think joe six-pack with a camera phone can replace the investigative journalism we require for our republic to function properly- and clearly, corporate media consolidation repesents a fatal threat to the media establishment.
In the future, the internet might begin doing serious, in-DEPTH journalism, but as of today, they don't.
Have a nice evening.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
As for free markets preventing monopolies. Only government regulation can create a monopoly. Without it, any company can sring up to produce a better an cheaper product. Take the classic example. The breakup of Standard Oil in 1911. Around 1895, Standard had about 95% of market share. That's as close to monopoly as it gets in a free market. It took the goverment 21 years since the inception of the anti trust laws to break it up. However, at the time of the break up Standard share was down to 61%
mickeysears 2 years ago
The free market competitors were taking a huge chunk out of Standards margin and market share all without government. Take the break up of ATT. Ma Bell had a vertual lock on phone business. Left alone the cell phone and cable and internet industries would have crushed ATT all without any government involvement. The break up allowed the baby bells to compete in all areas. In effect, it's the government that creates monopolies and protects big corporate monopolies from competitors.
mickeysears 2 years ago
how did the govt create walmart?
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
I'll assume the question because you think of Walmart as a monopoly? Walmart as of last quarter has only an 11.3% market share of retail stores. Hardly a monopoly. However, Walmart could not have achieved it's current size without government help. Be it tax credits, labor credits, opening in depressed zones, or reduced ratables. But the biggest boost to Walmart has to be through government allowed and regulated trade with China. Not too many companies are allowed this market.
mickeysears 2 years ago
you're right actually, govt has helped walmart very much.
however, when I drive across this country and see every town looking pretty much the same, it makes me sad. Homogenization is an awful consequence of our market driven society.
Every corner has a mcdonalds, starbucks, subway and walmart.
I think that sucks, but that is just an opinion. Maybe some people enjoy a lack of diversity.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
Only govt regulation can create a monopoly? I don't understand that statement; can you explain it further please?
thanks.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
I would love to hear one maybe two examples of this so I can go research corporations and why so many people don't believe its the government that cause this. I believe that limited government and competition eliminates these problems. And I would propose how do you control large multinational corporations that are more powerful than governments?
Orionx26 2 years ago
corporate malfeasance- where to begin. There's the contemporary stuff- enron, worldcomm, AIG... we can talk about tobacco companies and what they did to continue killing americans for decades... or how about general motors..buying up all the trolley cars so they could destroy public trans- now we all sit in traffic- yeah!

Then I want to be a doctor, and I want you to pay for it.
hint0122 1 year ago
@hint0122 "communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets that life is social"-MLK.
You are clearly a capitalist, and by your rhetoric, I judge that you have forgotten that life is SOCIAL. We live in a society. When everyone in the society is well educated, that benefits YOU
It is in YOUR selfish interest to see that our society is as well educated as possible
The same goes for health. It is in YOUR interest to help make sure everyone is as healthy as possible
We live in a society
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
what are you talking about? yes I am a capitalist since I like having and spending my money that i work for. not everyone in society needs to be well educated. should a janitor have a BA? should a dishwasher have a masters? When too many people have degrees and not the jobs to use them, you get nothing. It is not in my best Interest because we live in FREE society, where everyone has freedoms. I don’t care how fat you are, if you smoke or drink, nor should you care how fat I am.
hint0122 1 year ago
@hint0122 "not everyone in society needs to be well educated" Really? How then is that janitor supposed to be an informed voter if he doesn't know history? Even a janitor is a voter in a system of representative government with near universal voting rights.
Should a dishwasher be uneducated?
Again, how would he be able to perform his civic duties, in a representative republic, without knowing any history?
Our system depends entirely on an informed, educated electorate- that's why it's broken
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
how high of an education do you need to vote? not everyone needs a masters
hint0122 1 year ago
It's not about the LEVEL of education a person achieves-but what knowledge and understanding they receive. For a person to be an informed voter, the more history and political science they understand, the easier the job will be.
Ideally, we wouldn't even need kids to go to college to get this info- which SHOULD be taught in our k-12 system.
It isn't- to any acceptable degree.
Here is what Jefferson said:
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
so who would be the judge if someone is an informed voter?
hint0122 1 year ago
@hint0122 we would be able to look at the results and see that people are making informed decisions, just like today, we can see. clearly, that people are NOT well informed, and poll after poll conveys this ubiquitous ignorance.
I am NOT trying to brainwash everyone to be a leftist. I believe many conservatives would remain conservative, even if they studied. I just want people to be able to BACK UP their opinions with solid history and knowledge.

Christ taught peace ,love, and giving.Conservatives practice hate, selfishness, and cruelty. so to all who post here which one are you? a giving christian or a vile conservative?.....you can't be both!
wyrwulf69 2 years ago 2
can you be a christian and a capitalist? one preaches minimalism and altruism, the other necessitates greed and focusing on this earthly existence.
remember- rich men can't get into heaven.
so are you a christian or a capitalist?
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
And why can't the rich get into heaven?
NavySAR17 2 years ago
I think it has something to do with christianity being about shunning materialism- and clearly, rich people have not done that.
In essence though, it's about control. Christianity controls poor people, preventing revolutions, by promising them that the evil rich will be punished, while they "shall inherit the earth".
Religion is indeed the opiate of the masses.
tristramshandy3 2 years ago
wow, that may be the dumbest generalization I've ever heard

is Joe Lieberman an idiot. Health Care reform will help cut the deficit
Pills526 2 years ago
You believe health care "reform" will help cut the deficit and Joe Lieberman's the idiot?
Anakha13 2 years ago
You believe that Joe is telling the truth? And we're the idiots?
729Drew 2 years ago
I never said anything about his trustworthiness.
Anakha13 2 years ago
lol nevermind, long story short...Joe Liberman is a snake. like most politicians...so hes not really special at all. I guess i took the long way around that one.
729Drew 2 years ago
We have a one party system. Old news.
ConservativeLogic 2 years ago
all liberman said was (and this isn't a real quote) "we've just spent a bunch of money, why don't we wait until we have some more to spend, before we spend more" what part of that is outrageous AT ALL!?
MrBWB 2 years ago
You're talking about Joe Liberman...he waits on the fence to see which side is winning and then jumps on that bandwagon. He has no ethics or morals of his own, he sold out his own party to join McCain in the hopes of being VP...yeah, McCain didnt even trust him enough, then they lost...leaving Joe to crawl back to Washington asking for forgiveness, nobody, from either party trusts him...nor should they.
729Drew 2 years ago
i don't care who it is, he made a very reasonable statement.
MrBWB 2 years ago
What are you talking about? Sen. Liberman didn't leave the Democratic party to become Sen. McCain's VP. He left because the DNC stabbed him in the back during his re-election bid. He then ran as an Independent and won re-election.
Anakha13 2 years ago
I said he left in hopes of being the VP, he thought his friend John would just pick him cuz they're buddies. Yeah well he didnt, so he went independent cuz NIETHER party wanted anything to do with him.
729Drew 2 years ago
Yes you said that, and you are both factually and historically incorrect. The DNC sided with his opponent during his Senatorial primary, in no small part because he didn't shift with the DNC when they decided it was more politically advantageous to oppose the war they were in favor of when that was the politically advantageous stance. He went Independent because he had to, as the Democratic slot was taken by Ned Lamont.
Anakha13 2 years ago
Screw the Fed, screw these "reforms".
$Cant afford.
Stop the Wars! Cut spending (all crooked Dems and Reps rip us off)!
Maybe then we can afford?

ConservativeLogic 2 years ago
"Bipartisanism" is only possible when the idea for a bill, etc. doesn't conflict with the core-values of either party. Otherwise, one side is a sell-out.
taofledermaus 2 years ago
the conflicting issue is how they choose to define those "core-values," which is to say they define a greater slice of public opinion with minutia and shit than they do with vital, fundamental differences in political philosophy.
unclesamsfinger 2 years ago
Bipartisanship is indeed impossible at this point-- because the Democrats are the only ones making concessions, and until the insurance companies stop making contributions to Senators campaigns, the public option won't get passed. I am a Connecticut Democrat (currently too young to vote), and Lieberman has lost a LOT of support here. The only constituents he has who like him are the Republicans. I will be voting against him in 2012 unless he seriously changes his tune.
Mare416 2 years ago
lose their homes and their pensions, Goldman Sachs and these criminals are rolling around in cash because Obama and Bush has stolen YOUR tax money.
VonKarajanBPO 2 years ago 2
Agreed.
DanMorgan98 2 years ago

Let's cut the fucking crap for once.
mikejackson4ever 2 years ago
It's not so much the health care industry, what the real problem is nowadays is over reaching Corporate Power. When big corporations own both sides, than what is the point of voting ? The corporations just get their way anyway. Democracy is dieing. crupt corporations are fucking over the whole country.

every post you make is a complete Dem toaking point.

you wanna talk about the civil rights movement being done in steps, Lieberman, let's talk.

You can't stand this guy to be honest? That doesn't make sense.
I think it's funny how anyone with "Patriot" in their name always end up saying something violent.
Regardless, I'd like to know a couple of things that you feel were done by dems that violated the constitution.
Repubs have the Patriot Act, the Federal Reserve, and the IRS, ALL of which clearly violated the constitution, either, directly or indirectly.

Actually it was the democrats who instated the fed

I say they pass it with the 51 vote nuclear option. Or else we will be waiting another 50 years to find out that, once again, private health insurance doesn't work when left to their own devices.
