hey can somebody tell me what the name of the first symphony/track in this video is called. I've been looking all over for the title but I cant find it anywhere :)
@fredury It is Roy Scheider in "All That Jazz". The editor of that film, ALan Heim, is the director of this film "The Cutting Edge". Penn is speaking of his work as a director in "The Crossing Guard" and "The Pledge".
When she says "editing can slow down time... or speed it up," a clip from raging bull is playing. Actually, in this clip it was the frame rate, not the editing that manufactured this effect. Perhaps I'm being over-critical here... I nonetheless this this is a great program.
Yes, it is the frame rate that achieves the visual effect of slow motion. But keep it mind, it was the editors choice to use this clip at that moment to create such impact. The director probably shot it at both a faster frame rate (typically 60fps) and the normal 24fps, and the editor chose when and how to use it. So while I don't think you're being over critical, I do the think that the editor is more responsible for creating moments than we sometimes give them credit for!
Thankyou so much for uploading this! Im a college student and my Film class has ended for the year, which is terrible for me because I just want to keep learning. So i really appreciate these videos! They're fascinating -> and jam packed full of lengendary directors! :D
Editing. . . if scripting is the heart of moviemaking, editing is the brain. Can't live without a brain. It's my favorite part of filmaking after directing, and more complex then you may think. I'm favoriting this.
Most directors on movies of over 2 million in budget have the director in the editing room but asleep. They usually dropoff to dreamland during the 2nd to 4th cut. There directors who are exemptions to this but they're in the minority I think.
Forgive my English scandalous, I will try to explain better. The editing, as I said, is a matter of heart: the hands and fingers are only the means, such as Avid or Moviola, the cuts do not come from there, but just from the heart. In short: You must enter into perfect harmony with the film.
I agree wholeheartedly with what you've said. Filmmaking, in general, when done well comes from the heart. I'd be curious to know what you think of my own work. Come and check out my channel. I would love your opinion of it.
Hey Quentin, just come out the closet, nobody will judge you.

You mean *favoring*.
There's no such word as "favoriting".
Good thing you enjoy editing, because it involves very little writing.

Get a mac and go with Final Cut.
Or try and get an old copy of Avid Express that runs on PC if you dont have a Mac. Theyre both industry standard and you learn loads from both.
