In many ways I agree with Bluenote 71 but there seems to be more nightlife now than there was in those days. Now it kind of looks like a lot of places, certainly less unique than it was . But it seems safer at night now. I think Santa Cruz peaked right before the earthquake.
Bluenote71 is right, one of the Dirty Harry films has the Pacific Garden Mall featured in one of the case scenes & it looked better then. Unfortunately much of the great culture that was there left after the quake.
My dad and mom were in that and they have shirts that say i survived the 89 quake but i thought it wasnt a big deal but yeah that was pretty seriouse.
i was working at Rainbow Records on Pacific Ave. when it happened. Cooper house across the street was never rebuilt and much of the architecture of the new buildings was pretty bad. The Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper was given a lot of flak for printing a color picture on the front page of a woman being carried out this store (Ford's) with the lower half of her leg dangling....very bloody. It was a very surreal experience.
No. Downtown had a wonderful, eclectic culture, and once the buildings that housed the locally owned buildings were destroyed, the culture went with it, IMO.
My dad was there! He was in the music store next door to this store and when the quake hit he ran outside. He said he saw a lady outside of Ford's screaming "there's still people in there!" and then the roof collapsed! Thanks for posting I always imagined what my dad must of saw. Now I know.
I remember Rainbow Records. My twin sister and I hung out in there a lot when we were kids. My mom was friends with Michael Rainbow.

I bet the downtown area of Santa Cruz has improved since the 1989 earthquake. Was old town rebuilt as well?
