But not many other teams really got on top of him. I am a Sri Lankan and i must say our guys had a nightmare of a time against his bowling. He took two hatricks against us in two dead flat tracks in India. During his time if we ever won a test match against him that was when he was not playing for his team.

I ones saw his bowl when he was ill and he bowled like 7 overs (42 balls) of military medium pace, leg cutters and pitched the ball in the same freak'n spot on the pitch for like 40 balls and the other ball was a perfect yorker and the other was a perfect off cutter again pitched on the same spot...both almost got a wicket. that totals 7 overs. batsmen could not do anything.end of part 1

@melun1 another time I saw him bowl a real fast spell and he was walking back to his mark and he dropped the ball like 3 or 4 steps back to his mark. He simply picked up the ball and from those three steps bowled a short one that the batsmen (I think it was one of the Waugh brothers) played it like it was 100 mph. As far as sheer talent and variety I have never seen anyone like him. Some of his deliveries, top order batsmen used to play like they have never batted a day in there life.

@Biggus63 Have seen a few of his videos and I liked what I saw. IT's a shame that Gilmour couldn't make it big, but he had the potential for sure. His performance in the WC semi-final with ball and bat showed big-match temperament and an ability to perform under pressure. That's not very common.

If you're referring to the clip, I think you're confusing Lillee with Thommo, as it looks like DK hits C. Lloyd towards the end of it.

Ask Rick McCosker if he was still standing after being hit by J. Snow. It broke his jaw and he batted in the 2nd innings with his head wrapped up like an easter egg. Andy Roberts broke David Hookes' jaw in WSC. Look for what Larwood did to Australians in Bodyline. Bing & Shaoib are quick, but they're no quicker than others in history.

Great comments; I remember West Indies coming to England in 1976 and crushing us. We started the series off with some old hands like Edrich (even Close was recalled at 46 years of age!!) - all we did was draw the first two tests, we had a slight chance in 2nd test but rain intervened. That series was terrifying for English batsman, I remember Wayne Daniel's run up, the Daily Mirror did a landscape photo of his run up from the mid wicket boundary. That was a hot, hot summer, great days.

I saw most of this series, and Thomson was unbelievably quick. He was clocked twice, at Perth and Melbourne, both times at just over 160 kph. He probably bowled faster at some point. And look at the batting line up he destroyed: Fredericks, Greenwich, Lloyd, Richards, Kallicharran, Rowe ... one of best batting sides of all time
