Thanks for posting this video of this Ricky Skaggs classic. The sheet music for the terrific piano solo on "Country Boy" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
I agree, SuperGuitarman69. What's being passed off as country music today is not country. There's so little individuality among the vocalists today. The males all sound alike, the females all sound alike. I'm not saying they can't sing, only that the homogenized sound they're putting out is something other than country. I understand musicians wanting to put their own twist on music, but their product should be called something more akin to what it is, thus, a new genre.
I used to have this whole episode recorded on VHS, but lost it :( I wish someone would post the rest of the songs from it, I liked the Lovin' Only Me that Ricky performed on it.
Typical Yank - let the British Guy do the fuckin' work then you take all the credit! Just Like WWI and WWII turn up late after the main killing and then tell everyone you "saved the day" Hahahaha Yankee cunts...
Great to see. Two maestros with Ricky and Albert. I never did see Skaggs in concert but saw Albert many times and I knew him when he had nowt! He's just the same now as he was back then - kind, honest and a gentleman from the UK.
cotton-picker, damnit - cotton !!! I`ve noticed that whenever Ricky Skaggs performs it he always sings guitar-picker instead of cotton-picker as if he was embarrassed about the word cottonpicker, is he or is he not a country boy ? pick that cotton right boy, damnit !!
@SuperGuitarman69 Have you never heard of Brad Paisley? He's one of the best guitarists I have ever heard and he's not just great at playing straight-up country guitar but he can play blues, jazz and rock very well too! Paisley's 2008 album PLAY shows those four main genres off and even dives into sub genres like surf rock. And, of course, Albert Lee, Steve Wariner and B.B. King (as well as other great guitarists) join him for some songs on there!
@badfinger848 Brad is not in the elite. Sorry to tell you. I think as compared to what is "famous" (eye roll) he obviously has some talent above what else is heard coming out of Nashville. Come to Nashville and see for yourself. He couldn't hold a candle to the players that do not have deals. They are NOT famous, but trust me, around here Brad isn't anything. Us players rarely speak his name in conversations. And Jazz? BS he isn't even in the conversation. And if Brad knew who was posting P1
@SuperGuitarman69 sorry to burst your bubble Mr , but i've heard alot of the so called not famous Nashville guitarist and Brad is one of the best (solely as a guitar player) , then through in his song writing and amazing vocals n you'll see why he s a world wide hit n why the others aren't .
@slash129 No, you haven't... And Brad isn't a bad player, he is just really sloppy... He isn't even in the top 300 in Nashville... And burst my bubble? Hardly, I'm a pro session player... I am because I'm needed... If Brad didn't have a deal, he wouldn't be a session musician... He doesn't have the time, tone, nor chops.. And I really like Brad as a person.. But as a player he isn't in the conversation really.. But he its better than 90% of the garbage we put out here..
@SuperGuitarman69 I respect you being a well reputed sessions musician , can I hear some of your work ? I would really appreciate it , I'm a freelance live guitarist myself (probably not as good),play mostly blues , rock n most recently country , I'm just saying there's a reason why brads up there,he runs around n plays what most other ppl cant do standing (I own a wireless n know how challenging that is),plus if you look at this video of Albert lee , there is a few bum notes ...cont
@SuperGuitarman69 n lack of timing as with others of Nashville guitar players,Brad definitely has superior tone , no mistakes what so ever on any you tube videos of his(i've seen alot) , and most importantly his showmanship (the basic difference between rock stars and other guitarists) [a very important trait to capture an audience] , also lets not forget that ppl would much rather remember a mud on the tires solo (slightly difficult but beautifully composed) cont
@slash129 I am on a ton of stuff.. But it is mostly signature stuff.. Not a lot of burning on records.. I am on Doug Jernegans record and half of Paul Franklins new record that hasn't come out yet.. Also I did Aubrey Haney's record and Branford Marsalis's new thing we just did..
@SuperGuitarman69 point taken , i've not been to Nashville so I dont know what other talent exists there besides youtube videos , I didn't say Brad was better than Brent tho, can you inbox me a song of one of these artist you mentioned you played on , even if i search for random songs of theirs I would kno if it wer you or other sessions guitarists , I love checkin out country inspired guitarists , thanks
@slash129 Lol, yeah it isn't anything to write home about.. Brent got to play on records in the 90's when country was cooking back then.. Now (with the exception of Brad) there really isn't any great need for cool playing.. It's mainly a chord pad "sound" thing with some ovd's.. Not much cool soloing.. and yeah Brent is the man.. But believe it or not? There are guys here that are just as incredible.. It makes me proud of Nashville. Wish they were known I really do.. They deserve it..
@SuperGuitarman69 to predictable but highly difficult country phrased solos like the one above.Just saying , give him his due , dont look at it from a technical point of view , composing beautiful solos n signature riff is just as important , that where Brad,Mark Knophler,Joe Walsh,Slash score over Vai , buckethead,Brent Mason.
@slash129 Brad plays signature riffs??? Hardly.. You cannot sing back one of his riffs in the least... That is a laugh a minute.. Look, as I have stated, compared to what's coming out of Nashville that the masses hear, Brad is definitely in the top percentage... But he is far from being someone who is close to being in the conversation of greatness. And I am talking just in Nashville.. To say he is better than Brent (a personal friend) is a f...n joke... Brad didn't inspire 1% of what Brent has
@salvadormarley we do.. They are everywhere.. It's just that none if them are signed to record deals.. They are more interested in someones appearance than the way someone sounds or what talent they have.. Adele should be a wake up call to all music industry mogals.. She is amazing and people could care less if she is heavy.. She makes real music!
It's a rare thing for someone who may well be the best in the world on his instrument to be a sensitive and generous ensemble player, but here's Albert being just that. His enthusiasm is infectious. Oh, and Ricky's no slouch, no sir.
I have spent 30 years trying to learn this and i am very close and very glad because it is the best song ever recorded and this may be the best version too.
I play in a country rock band and this song goes down great. Currently we can manage about 155 bpm but some of the versions with Mr Skaggs and his band are around 170 bpm - respect!
Thank you drethe47 for sharing this video. Ricky mentioned at the begining of this video that Albert Co-wrote this song. Yes he did with my husband Ray Smith in 1970 when they had there band together Heads Hands and Feet. Thanks again, great video.
It appears that they were probably Brits, but I can't find anything definitive. I discovered, however, that Chas Hodges from Chas & Dave played with them.
that is so cool they are the best flawless
