4 over 3... is that like playing quarter notes over a waltz time-signature?

But your example at 2:53 isn't in 3/4... but I hear a big rhythmic difference between the 2 examples.

@12x12surface no, it's playing 4 evenly spaced notes during the time of 3 quarter notes. The subdivision is dotted 8th notes, which has the duration of three 16th notes. Four times 3/16 equals 12/16. Which is the same as 3/4, so four dotted 8th notes is the same as three quarter notes. That's the math, but for it to be useful you need to be able to feel the rhythm of three going against four. First and foremost your body needs to be firmly connected with the quarter note pulse.

thanks... I didn't quite get the math you explained, but I did listen to your track over and over and over again to get the rhythm

It's a lot easier when I have my guitar with me to play along rather than trying to figure it out conceptually in my head - it messes me up.
