@TheLegacyofWrestling In my opinion, Norm Sloan is very underrated and he deserves a much higher standing in college basketball coaching history. Today he is almost never mentioned despite a national championship, over 600 career wins and success with multiple programs.
It's utterly absurd to argue that UCLA was the "better team" in this game. Character and determination are as much a part of a "winning team" as talent. Watch the game from the time UCLA is up by 7 pts in the second overtime and tell me that UCLA is the better team. NOT!
The better team is the one that won the game. I've always been a devout Wooden fan, but NC State capitalized on UCLA's turnovers, Thompson was amazing, and Burleson rose to the occasion. You can see Walton disappear in the last few minutes, and the rest of the Bruins follow suit. He wasn't the same player in 74 that he was in 73. The fire seemed to go out of him.
@Capybara91. The foot injury suffered in that NCAA Final against Memphis State took it out. He probably should have quit then or rehabbed it instead of playing the 1973-1974 but the pros were calling.
@ciscopack Keep dreaming Wolfpack fan. UCLA won 88 games in row. I will always believe the Bill Walton UCLA team was better than the David Thompson N. C. State team.
I have this game on DVD. N.C. State didn't play their A-game, but they still were able to pull it out.
Honestly, I don't know how UCLA beat them by 20 earlier that year. It seems to me that they would win more on mystique than talent sometimes, even though they had a good team.
Before this game Wooden said "I want State to dwell on that 20 point margin" a reference to the game in December won by UCLA. Tommy Curtis called it "a real whippin'". Sometimes it pays to keep your mouth shut. Apparently State did dwell on that 20 point margin. UCLA had no excuse for this one, they were up 11 in the second half and couldn' t put it away. NC State was just a lot better than they had been in December.
Starting at about 7:10, NC State seems to go from 72 to 76 points with one basket. Perhaps they skipped a couple of points.

you see most teams were scared of U.C.L.A. when they walked out on the court N.C.STATE was not

Not only did the better team win, they also were the best team the year before at 27-0. NC State Wolfpack that is.

UCLA blew two 11 point leads in the second half and a 7 point lead in the second over-time. The better team did not win this game.
