  • the reason why Mr. Peterson plays this so well, is he wrote it in the 60s

  • video response:

    watch?v=EcEEfZBFrNw

  • this is the version i like most and wish it being played at my funeral once!

das ist meine lieblingsversion, die einst auf meiner trauerfeier erklingen sollte!

  • An old friend just did, this hymn to freedom is for him

  • rip sweet legend

  • bridge over troubled water it sounds like but I prefer this

  • 6 people are Fucktards - how can anyone dislike this video???

  • A truly remarkable performance. Wonder when this was recorded, since he died in december 23rd 2007 ??

  • Bass is kickin'....;)

  • I vote this for International and National anthems. Hymn to Freedom!

  • Oscar Peterson lives! (1925-2007)

  • Oscar Peterson-legend beyond any words my brain can think of!

  • If you can find it, look for a CD (OK I'm old fashioned) "Oscar Peterson in Russia" 1974 I think. Listen to the change in audience response from first track to last. OK, there's a couple of mind-blowing solos on there too. Recommended reading "The Will to Swing". Recommended video "In the Key of Oscar". My idol still plays & plays......

  • Ja od Paciorka !

  • Наблюдаю за творчеством исполнителя более 50 лет не перестаю восхищаться!

  • Hey palanzana, this is lovely. Do you know the year of this broadcast? I'm assuming it was after Peterson's stroke?

  • Oscar saved me.His music is special.

  • Elegante para todo o sempre...Magnífico.....King Oscar Peterson

    Makes me so happy :))

  • wonderful~~!!! soul of the piano

  • Such a good song!!! I love the groove at 2:44 but I still prefer the solo version to this one.

  • I'm learning the song now .... its clear, striaght forward, analyzible and just down right beautiful ! Oscar peterson will be missed but his band, his music will live on !!

  • absolut die fiinschte finger!

  • What kind of human sb have to be to dislike this song? Clear gold song

  • I guess those 5 guys who disliked this are entitled to their opinion, but they shouldn't have watched the video if they didn't like gospel, jazz, actual music, or awesomeness.

  • Nostalgic.

  • Oscar, Du hättest nach Deinem Schlaganfall nicht wieder spielen dürfen. Es ist unter Deiner Würde. Es ist leider Grottenschlecht. Oscar war der Beste!!!!

  • He was about 80 years old when he played this!! AMAZING!

  • Hi friends, you are invited to enjoy a Beautiful free online master class on the playing of Oscar Peterson. You will LOVE this! Type in "Dave Frank" Oscar on YT.

  • @amfm37 Yes, NHOP IS much!!!

  • FREEDOM!!!!OH,IT SOUNDS SO GOOOOOD

  • FREEDOM!!!!OH,IT SOUNDS SO GOOOOOD

  • wtf....who dislike this song :X ?

  • You know, I've heard this piece played many times by many people... But no one can play it quite like Oscar did. Somehow the nuance and soul he put into every note just can't be duplicated. Sort of like how no one can play Rachmaninov quite like he did himself. And I think that Oscar should stand with guys like Rachmaninov and Liszt as one of the greatest pianists who has ever lived.

  • @UnDead483 I wholeheartedly agree

  • @UnDead483 correction lol, he is the greatest pianist that ever lived well at least in my opinion.

  • @UnDead483 I completely agree. Only Oscar Peterson could play Hymn to Freedom like that. I have played that piece but it don't come close to Oscar. Makes a person go "ohhh yeahhhhhh". :)

  • Best pianist ever. I'm sure they have a piano up there for you!!

  • @PopcornFever The pauses ARE the soul.

  • I whised Oscar could play his music all day to me! It never gets bored! R.I.P. Oscar!

  • I think five people just aimed wrong with the cursor

  • sometimes his virtuosity gets in the way of the music, but with this song he shows superior musicianship. thumbs up.

  • 5 people accidently clicked the dislike button.

Wish i could have seen him live.

  • The one and only one ¡¡¡¡Oscar Peterson!!!!

At six I joined my parents jazz club in our home (in México).

Guess who tapped with her little foot Oscars's rithm.

Fifty two years listening to all those recordings. Simply heavenly!

"In the Wee Hours of the Morning" one of my favorites. It transmits his estate of mind, his emotios, his joy and at the same time his sadness at this particular piece.

    Long live Oscar!

  • Oi. So I'm sittin there, tending bar, when in walks someone I've never seen before in my life, Chell from Portal.

  • White socks

  • 日本盤アルバムの "Night Train"にある演奏の方が好きなのですが・・・・・

    もっとシンプルな演奏だったような気がします。

  • What i would give to have that Bosendorfer

  • did you all see that cheeky lil smile he gives half way through! beautiful! this reminds me of my cousin playing this at my dads funeral :( R.I.P Oscar and my dad!

  • Wakenius still had hair

  • the best

  • Oscar is the best, simply the best!:)

  • BRILLIANT BRILLIANT

  • amaizing

  • If you do not like Oscar Peterson, you do not like good music!

  • @pbobassist it's a dane called Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHOP)

  • damn this makes me happy

  • who is the bassist? this incredible music:)

  • Oscar Peterson is such a great pianist!

  • since I heard this on House, I fell in love with it!

  • アルバム「ナイト・トレイン」の最後にオンされている "Hymn to Freedom" の

    演奏の方が好みです。

  • That song always brings a lump to my throat What I'd give to be able to play like that

  • Fastastic!

  • Awesome. Gorgeous piece. <3

  • There is no language more beautiful than music. no more need be said.

  • The great o mior pianista do século XX

  • this music will make the sun shine on a dark day, i love it

  • 3 people have no emotion. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. RIP Oscar, thank you!

  • who's the guitarist?

  • @stewrules It is the Swedish guitaris Ulf Wakenius. ;)

  • my music teachor told me to go on here and check it out and im glad i did R.I.P oscar your the best!

  • Oscar Peterson didn't rely on 'tricks' the same way other jazz pianists did. He saw through the superficial, overused voicings and licks. He was truly an innovator of tone, swung rhythm, and jazz soloing. A brilliant, brilliant man.

  • View 'Oscar's Corner' a sculpture of Oscar at his piano in Ottawa, Canada on the World Wide Panorama and on Ottawa Panoramas

  • So much feeling indeed. OP was a true musician, as welll as NHØP. I could listen to this all night.

  • So much fucking feeling, That how music is meant to be played.

  • ----you are unicue indeed---and still exist----the best one----

  • magistral ...

  • see that sweat drippin off that man's head just off of playing the piano. one of the best pianist i've ever heard...

  • boooooooooooooooo to the 2 people who disliked this!!!!!! Long live the music of oscar pwterson, the greatest jazz piano player to ever live! love you forever oscar!!!

  • Anyone else first heard this song on House M.D?

  • My wonderful dad, Martin on drums. So proud and missing him lots. His music will live on forever. Love ya dad xxx

  • @MsFunkyDancer

Heard your dad twice with Oscar. He was magnificent and you are rightfully proud.

  • @MsFunkyDancer

    who is your dad?

    if I may ask ;)

  • @MsFunkyDancer We all love him.

  • @MsFunkyDancer This song is actually quite a sad - it really marks the end of a superb jazz era.

  • hey you, you poor "disliker"! how does feel to live alone in a world, where the sun never shines?

  • The best musical piece for a night with friends, a good bottle of wine and lots of chitchat

  • i get no sound

  • @howardc206 I feel disgustingly bad for you

  • Amen brother, this is music!

  • Immortal

  • just amazing

  • Hi all of you wannabee-musicians. You see this? Go learn.

  • Perfection is imperfect beside this .

  • Get on your knees, brothers. All your sins will be forgiven.

    This is better than breathe.

    (Or just the same.)

  • Very nice, and incredible side band !!! Ulf Wakenius on guitar and Dane Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in the bass do a really fine job...

    Cheerz, N.

  • @Locoporcromo1 Don't forget the great Martin Drew on drums.

  • cant listen to this without tears in my eyes ... it is soooooo beautiful!!!

  • beautiful!!!

  • This has to be the most poignant version ive heard, but it is simply gorgeous. Almost as though he is lamenting at what the world has become.

  • Tear jerking stuff :( one of the very best along with Flamenco Sketches

  • heavenly good!

  • I could watch this video all day long. I just love Oscar Peterson ♥ he did real MUSIC

  • Hello DrummerMike86,the guitar player in this video is Ulf Wakenius.

  • Who is the guitar player in this video?

  • @DrummerMike86 It's Ulf Wakenius, he's done some stuff with Pat Methany that's on youtube.

  • i wish my brain and heart can find the words to explain this great piece of art work.

  • damn, that is a 80 (?)year old man here .. he really hold his word after his stroke..

  • So sad to watch this one after watching the pre-stroke versions. Although, really, it makes it that much better.

  • I actually think this is the best version of Hymn to Freedom I've ever heard. Oscar seems to make up for his loss of mobility by really seeking out the emotional depth of this song. It's almost a stately rendition of the hymn. Along with his version of Wave, it's probably the most moving of Oscar's performances.

  • Браво!!!!! =)

  • rip mr peterson you were great

  • Outstanding

  • You have to thank the Lord for Canada's own Oscar Peterson. My school's Vocal Repertoire(Choir for those of you who don't know the word), is doing this in Oscar's honour. May god bless your soul and may your music provice the same job for eveyone, as it did for me. God Bless you dear friend.

    Love from Home (Canada).

  • thrilling..makes me cry

  • Oscar is by far, the greatest piano player I have ever heard. There are many pianists, but only one true piano player. Thanks for the memories, Oscar. May Freedom Ring Forever!

  • Even the pauses have soul! What I wouldn't give to have his talent, his soul and even that rich sounding piano! RIP Oscar, I hope they've got a piano up there for you!

  • amazing

  • UH-mazing

  • damn, i wish i could play like that, oscar you are delightful.

  • Yess!

  • This jewel belongs to the top 10 of ALL MUSIC, ALL CENTURIES AND ALL COUNTRIES INCLUDED !

  • R.I.P Oscar, you are wonderful :)

  • WTF? Why'd they cut the bass solo in the middle? Sacrilege... Although this is a terrific version. Different from the album version, but terrific.

  • So beautiful... Love NHØPs playing too!

  • This music wreaks of sorrow, extreme melancholy and desperate nostalgia.

    It's gut wrenching.

    God bless Oscar Peterson.

  • Mmmhmm. Beautiful. :)

  • 아..정말 미치도록 좋은 이 느낌...

  • Algo iso. ku nukkimun paro jazz nikkum iyo. Hangukeso jazz nun kudaji kuji ana.

  • Terrific!!!!!

  • he does move his left hand?!

  • in fact , in 1993 he suffered a serious stroke that weakened his left side and sidelined him for two years. Then (which is actually the moment of the video) he gradually regained mobility and some control of his left hand, but not completely.

  • This video is very emotional,

Oscar Peterson had had Apoplexia at this Time, he can't move his left hand

    I cry, I'm very sad

  • you're right, on second thought, its in four.

  • Oh this is simply wonderful. I wish this was the national hymn of my country.

  • Always good to hear this song....

  • wow. this is really something. i love oscar peterson's music.

  • You kinda hear some elements from Bridge over Troubled Water in it. At least i do. 1:42 - 1:46 for example

  • I don't know the music well enough to be sure, but Hymn to Freedom was composed by Oscar Peterson, and recorded in 1962, see his Night Train CD. Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Water was recorded in 1969. So if there was borrowing, and if this is a faithful rendition of the Peterson composition, then Paul Simon did the borrowing.

  • i really dont think oscar was thinking about that.

  • o no thats not what i meant. Didnt mean to say Oscar ripped the guys or the other way around, just noted the similarities

  • nice little waltz

  • i loved this when i heard it on house! :)

  • which episode perchance?

  • "All In" (2x17)

  • thats my favourite episode of all of them

  • Wow. This was hauntingly beautiful. And i just happend to find this by chance. I was really, truly touched by this.

  • One of my favorites ...

  • Beautifull.
