If you can find it, look for a CD (OK I'm old fashioned) "Oscar Peterson in Russia" 1974 I think. Listen to the change in audience response from first track to last. OK, there's a couple of mind-blowing solos on there too. Recommended reading "The Will to Swing". Recommended video "In the Key of Oscar". My idol still plays & plays......
I'm learning the song now .... its clear, striaght forward, analyzible and just down right beautiful ! Oscar peterson will be missed but his band, his music will live on !!
I guess those 5 guys who disliked this are entitled to their opinion, but they shouldn't have watched the video if they didn't like gospel, jazz, actual music, or awesomeness.
Oscar, Du hättest nach Deinem Schlaganfall nicht wieder spielen dürfen. Es ist unter Deiner Würde. Es ist leider Grottenschlecht. Oscar war der Beste!!!!

You know, I've heard this piece played many times by many people... But no one can play it quite like Oscar did. Somehow the nuance and soul he put into every note just can't be duplicated. Sort of like how no one can play Rachmaninov quite like he did himself. And I think that Oscar should stand with guys like Rachmaninov and Liszt as one of the greatest pianists who has ever lived.
@UnDead483 I completely agree. Only Oscar Peterson could play Hymn to Freedom like that. I have played that piece but it don't come close to Oscar. Makes a person go "ohhh yeahhhhhh". :)
At six I joined my parents jazz club in our home (in México).
Guess who tapped with her little foot Oscars's rithm.
Fifty two years listening to all those recordings. Simply heavenly!
"In the Wee Hours of the Morning" one of my favorites. It transmits his estate of mind, his emotios, his joy and at the same time his sadness at this particular piece.
did you all see that cheeky lil smile he gives half way through! beautiful! this reminds me of my cousin playing this at my dads funeral :( R.I.P Oscar and my dad!
Oscar Peterson didn't rely on 'tricks' the same way other jazz pianists did. He saw through the superficial, overused voicings and licks. He was truly an innovator of tone, swung rhythm, and jazz soloing. A brilliant, brilliant man.
boooooooooooooooo to the 2 people who disliked this!!!!!! Long live the music of oscar pwterson, the greatest jazz piano player to ever live! love you forever oscar!!!
I actually think this is the best version of Hymn to Freedom I've ever heard. Oscar seems to make up for his loss of mobility by really seeking out the emotional depth of this song. It's almost a stately rendition of the hymn. Along with his version of Wave, it's probably the most moving of Oscar's performances.
You have to thank the Lord for Canada's own Oscar Peterson. My school's Vocal Repertoire(Choir for those of you who don't know the word), is doing this in Oscar's honour. May god bless your soul and may your music provice the same job for eveyone, as it did for me. God Bless you dear friend.
Oscar is by far, the greatest piano player I have ever heard. There are many pianists, but only one true piano player. Thanks for the memories, Oscar. May Freedom Ring Forever!
Even the pauses have soul! What I wouldn't give to have his talent, his soul and even that rich sounding piano! RIP Oscar, I hope they've got a piano up there for you!
in fact , in 1993 he suffered a serious stroke that weakened his left side and sidelined him for two years. Then (which is actually the moment of the video) he gradually regained mobility and some control of his left hand, but not completely.
I don't know the music well enough to be sure, but Hymn to Freedom was composed by Oscar Peterson, and recorded in 1962, see his Night Train CD. Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Water was recorded in 1969. So if there was borrowing, and if this is a faithful rendition of the Peterson composition, then Paul Simon did the borrowing.
the reason why Mr. Peterson plays this so well, is he wrote it in the 60s
