If you're told something, you typically believe it. If someone told you at an early enough age that, say, some people were superior to others, chances are, you'd believe it.
It's the same with Data. He was told he didn't have emotions and carried out with that thought. But the thing about Data: he was probably the most compassionate, loving, thoughtful, friendly characters in the entire history of Star Trek.
@mcc613 I disagree implicitly; electrical impulses give rise to biochemical reactions and as for nature or nurture, it doesn't matter it is decreed right or wrong by society or the individuals or those surrounding abilities to adapt, which gives rise to the initial 'electrical impulses...'
I cried the first time I saw this scene. I had a feeling I was going to lose it before the end of the show, but I didn't know it'd be as soon as this. Very sad, but great episode.
The second episode to choke me up. First was the measure of a man. as fas as I am concerned, Data is the main character of startrek.

What is a feeling anyways? Is it simply a biochemical reaction in our brain that we experience tangibly under predicatble circumstances?
Or is it more than that? Do they extend beyond our physical being somehow into the ether?
Either way it is our task to master them like the Vulcans whether we know it or not.

It's the favorite episode of Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Flakes. Truly a great episode that is what Star Trek is all about.
