I just saw this book mentioned in the "What are you reading?" section of The Christian Science Monitor's book review page. So I Googled, found this video, and am on my way to order this entrancing-sounding book now. Thanks in advance for this wonderful "find" of a true story with a moral message we can all respond to and learn from, Elizabeth!
i just read the book & i must say in all honesty , one of the best stories ive ever read. truly touching & well written , it brought a tear to my eye & im a ladies man a hard bodied italian stallion . its a must read & i would luv to see the movie if it ever transpires . thank u elizabeth letts . & if ur single get back to me doll !!!!
This book is amazing! I just finished reading this and I seriously cried at the end. It's the most touching book I have ever read, and the moral of it is "Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover" for sure!! It's amazing and I highly recommend reading it.
This story is truly extraordinary. I got my first horse (a big, white grade mare) in 1972 and turned professional in 1983, making my career as a jumper trainer on the backs of many rescued off-track thoroughbreds. Not only does Snowman and Harry's story illustrate the history of modern equines in North America, it highlights the plight of millions of horses post-WWII, and the societal changes that took horses from the status of being owned out of necessity to pleasure and show animals.
Thanks for the beautifully portrayed story of Snowman and Harry. I just finished reading The Eighty-Dollar Champion and I want MORE! Such a trip through history, and through the lives of two extraordinary beings, Snowman and Harry. You've written a magnificent story magnificently!
I was a real horse nut when I was a kid and I remember reading a book about Snowman...this was back in the late 60s early 70s and I remember how much I loved his story. Really wonderful to see this amazing animal getting so much deserved attention 45 years on.
I am a retired English teacher, an avid reader, and an animal lover. I have just finished your awe inspiring book The Eighty Dollar Champion, and I have never been more moved by a book. It touched me in ways that I cannot describe. The serendipity that had to take place when Snowman and Harry found each other-TWICE!- made my heaet swell. I am not wasily moved to tears, but I cried on more than one occasion while reading your book. I am going to recommend it to everyone! Thanks!
I also, just finished reading the book, The Eighty Dollar Champion & I absolutely LOVED it :) THANK YOU Ms. Letts for writing this book. We need more happy stories like this to inspire us. I pray Walt Disney will make a movie about Snowman & Harry de Leyer. That would be a nice tribute to a kind man who saved a horse, that everyone else had given up on. Merry Christmas!!
This is such a remarkable story and so well told by the author. I was riveted the entire way through despite already knowing the story of Snowman and Mr. De Leyer. I am a "lifer " with horses, over 50 years now . I could so closely relate to Mr. De Leyer's sentiments about horses as teachers. I would be a much lesser person today as I relate to my family, my animal family, my neighbors and the world if I had not been blessed to be entwined in the world of equines. THANKS for a superb book
I am almost done with the book, and I hate for it to end. You have captured in this story the magic of the relationship that humans can have with horses when there is mutual love, respect, and understanding. As a dedicated student of the Parelli Horse . Man . Ship program, I embrace what Harry de Leyer was able to accomplish naturally. Thank you so much for creating this inspirational story.
I'd forgotten his name, but I remember reading about him when I was a horse-sick city girl in the 1970s. Wonderful! I look forward to reading more about him.
Reading the e-book now and so enjoying the story of both Harry and Snowman. Saw Snowman in 1969, but didn't know about him then, though have never forgotten him. So glad you wrote this book.
I finished your book several days ago. It is one of the best-written and wonderful books I have ever read. When I learned to jump in the early 1970's when I was in high school, everyone knew who Snowman and Harry de Leyer were and they were our heroes. I was so excited to learn about your book coming out this fall. I hope someone will make a movie of this story and not give up this time. Thank you for this wonderful book about a wonderful story, and for bringing back great memories for me.
Just finished reading your book. Wonderful story, and you made it come alive. A once in a lifetime horse finds a once in a lifetime horseman. Thanks for telling the story so well.
This book is so well written that the 'movie' played inside my head the entire time - no need for Hollywood to get involved although this remarkable story would then be unveiled to those who don't or can't read.Upon further consideration, perhaps a movie should be made so that everyone could fall in love with Snowman as well as the character of an honest man. Thank you Ms Letts for this beautiful book .
