After graduating jump school, how can you secure a spot in an airborne unit or at least have a better chance of landing in an airborne unit? Thanks for the help!
@tripplenipple100 file a request form from your clerk at battalion i forgot the exact number of the form but in the request form you can request to go to an airborne unit. right now there is less than a handful of them most are in the special operations realms but if your starting out a well rounded unit will be the 82nd airborne division. not to be confused with the 101st airborne division which was ones airborne but is no longer.
@crgaillee This is the Holland DZ. I could be wrong on this, but I believe this is the only DZ with a tower. Most of my jumps were onto Sicily DZ, the biggest one. We always had to hump it to the trucks, even on Hollywood jumps.
@ODST901 When I was there, you would deploy for anywhere from 4-15 months, then you'd be home for a year, then you'd deploy again. Year long deployments are the norm these days, but I knew a few guys who did short 4 month tours.
82nd is one of those units where you can deploy on 18 hours notice. I did Iraq for 15 months and we left on 6 days notice. We got the call the day after Christmas 2006.
@ODST901 they rotate the units within the 82nd airborne on a regular basis. if your there for 3 years you may go ones or twice. i had a friend that was there for 3 years and never got deployed i guess he joined in a weird time frame between cycles. he miss deployment by about 4 months.
Of course! It may or may not require some administrative paperwork *if* you get orders to go somewhere else along the way. It is possible depending on your MOS. You may have leverage against such orders if you are married with children, or if you are a shining soldier who works directly for a high ranking soldier with clout.
@SpartanW98 dudde there are soldier in the 82 that have never been anywhere else. its like the mafia you try to get out but they pull you back in. if you go just remember dont chance the star let the star come to you.
@juju62861 when i was in the 82nd body armor was optional when jumping. alot of paratroopers preferred to jump without it and instead place it in their ruck sacks along with the ammo.
@edde8282 Haha thanks but I have now figured this out FIRST HAND as I just earned my blood wings last week! :D Getting stationed with the 1st Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade!!!!! HOOAH!!! I am just home on leave for 13 days first. Thanks for the reply though!
this is a great vid, i was just wondering how hard it is to get in and how exactly do you get into the 82nd, 11b with airborne in your contract? thanks for ya service man, glad ya came home safe
Getting Airborne put in your contract shouldn't be difficult at all for a competent recruiter to do. I could give you a long-winded answer, but the simplest answer to your question is to keep in good shape and learn your Airborne training well. In my opinion, the easiest way to fail Airborne school is to fall out of more than 2 runs and become a "jump refusal." Training usually lasts 3 weeks. Send me a private message if you would like me to expound on it for ya, k?
@evolnieveilebi Hey Evol... Could you please be more descriptive on how to get Airborne added on your contract?.... You said. to ask a recruiter .. but in California, we don't sign our Contract until were at the MEP station ....
Thanks Bud.. Nice Landing btw.. srry its your last jump =\
@Sh3pardMelody even if you dont have airborne in your contract you can still request it after basic training. getting airborne in your contract is the easiest thing to do. you may not realize it but many people are afraid to jump from a perfectly good airplane and they are practically begging you to join the airborne along with rangers and special forces. and if you want to be a ranger or special forces, airborne school is a must.
@rick9388 even if you dont have it in your contract they offer it to you after basic training. in my opinion the hardest thing in airborne school is the constant running and the actual jumping out of the plane which can be a scary thing to do for the first few times. in my class we had a marine that hesitated out the door and caused some problems but just listen to the jumpmasters they know what their doing.
A Jump Master died a few months or so after my first arrival to the 82nd in 2001. He got sucked out of the bird and his chute apparently malfunctioned. He was married with kids. That's the only death I know of. They are rare. Injuries are not, though, haha.
Thats why all Jumpmasters have the plastic piece in their reserve now that keeps it from deploying if they brush up against the trail edge of the door.
The most challenging thing for me was running. But, most soldiers who aspire to become paratroopers are already pretty good at running. I always had great upper body strength for push-ups and sit-ups, but running? Never ran faster than a flat 15min 2-mile, which is poor, but I'm 38 and became a paratrooper at age 30. Plus I'm 5'7" and had a short stride. Just make sure you have an above average PT test score and you should be fine skatepunkzero.
I don't know what Civil Air Patrol is- is that Army?
If you are already a soldier, you will have to go through your chain of command and the PAC office and probably fill out a DA Form 4187 to make the request per your commander and then wait for a slot to open up- I'm not an expert about how to do it, and I have already forgotten a lot, so don't quote me. If you are still a civilian, simply make sure your recruiter puts orders in your contract before you sign anything.
I don't think Jump School is any more challenging than Basic Training, at the most. If you like jumping off the swimming pool high-dive and riding roller coasters and stuff like that, you'll really be proud of yourself and get off on the thrill of jumping out. (And remember, most of your jumps at Fort Bragg, NC will be at *night.*)
Thank you. I have a son going to airborne in a few weeks. This video helps us to prepare somewhat for what he is going to go through. Also, God bless you for your service to our country.
You're welcome! I miss jumping already! And today I just got my lifetime membership certificate and I.D. card from the 82nd Airborne Association! It almost choked me up.
My last jump was in August 93. Holywood, 141. Great ha, God there and the DZSO poped the Red Smoak just in time for the first pass to get out. 26 knott winds. I landed feet head on Sicily. Next thing I know I am out of my harness looking for the Medivac. OH AH Medivac, Medivac all the way Hayyyyyy!!!!!!
I envy you dude!! - I was in the 82nd ABD from 1983 to 1986, and I really miss it.. I knew a lot of great guys, miss them too. Thanks for sharing this video, you had a great jump !! - I remember my last day, and I was sad too. Proud to be an All American.
Airboooorne!!! nice view, hey man dont be sad, please, i am reserve oficer in my country Honduras, i have just 6 jumps, is very dificult get a jump here, but i have to travel to Guatemala. then i pay like 10 dollars or something, and they let me jump. this is my 4th jump in july/2007, in tamara drop zone. have a good jump!
Yes, there are female paratroopers! However, their MOS's are support related. Meaning, there are no female paratroopers permitted to have combat related MOS's, such as infantry or artillary. You should be proud, or at least impressed with female paratroopers who can keep up with (and sometimes surpass) their male paratrooper comrades.
yes, but they dont jump into combat. they are basically just support people who get to jump. combat paratroopers (infantry and artillery) are all male

If you are referring to the body armor, then according to my experience, it is not commonly worn during regular Airborne exercises.
