On the other hand: "Half a million lives are gone" ----> That's the total count of losses, suffered by both sides. So I guess it's mainly written from a neutra persepctive. Fits the other lyrics, too. Your milage might vary, thought.

@rubiesncreme Sir Douglas Haig wasted half a million men in his large-scale offensive against the Krauts at Passchendaele. He didn't even care if assaults like those are largely ineffective, all he wanted was to break the German lines. He should have used the bite and hold tactic (which Sir Herbert Plumer had used in the Batle of Messines Ridge), which aims to use limited numbers of troops for small-scale attacks on limited objectives, instead of wasting a lot of men on far-fetched objectives.
