As much as I love this song, this version is just terrible... They must have been really tired while they were singing it. And the keys instead of opening guitar just does no justice to the beauty of the original!
@kirtanakrishna The guitar IS in there, it's just really, REALLY low in the mix at first. If you listen very carefully before the drums come in you'll hear it.
This is from 1989 rehersals in an empty airplane hanger in Toronto Canada if i remember correctly, there is no audience. had it on a poor VHS copy long ago, that i transferred to cassette in mono... so i could listen to it on my walkman ! cool video as they were running thru several songs and testing out all the light effects also, your sound here is 100 % better. Thank You !
Yeah, I know it sounds that way, but it just isn't the case. Gilmour talked about this in an interview circa 2006 or so. Wright hadn't played much or sung in nearly a decade and quite simply could not hit the high notes, so they switched parts. It's one of the reasons they ditched Echoes on the tour. I should add that I saw them perform Echoes twice on the AMLOR tour, and both times Gilmour sand the higher register.
I really wish they performed this more in the later years. It's a hard song to capture the atmosphere of which is maybe why they were insecure about using it but I think it sounds nice here...maybe not as solid as the Pompeii version though ;-)
@jwild611 I completely agree as it's my favorite Pïnk Floyd track. The problem is David Gilmour was tired of playing it which is why they dropped it as the 1987 tour went on.
From Nick Shaffner's excellent Pink Floyd bio "A Saucerful Of Secrets", which was published around 1990, I believe. I think they had them set to rehearse but never played full versions as they weren't working.
Right, guys: The reason this didn't make the majority of setlists for the tour in '87 is that they knew it didn't sound too great- this was a warm up with no crowd. They also tried "Dogs" and "Sheep" out, but decided against using them...
Gilmour's renditions from '06 were fantastic. The two that have been released are prime examples of this (Royal Albert Hall and Gdańsk Shipyard). Had they rehearsed this more for this tour it would have stayed in the set. It instead bombed as can be heard in the Philadelphia soundboard. The best Floyd version is probably Hamilton 1974.
si riconosce dal sound che non sono i pink floyd e anche dagli scarsi effetti scenografici, dai pochi strumenti e dalla bruttezza del pezzo da loro riproposto.
@ritesh10012001 I have to disagree. Alot of their later '80s work was pretty bad, but thats because there was a bad vibe in the group; Roger Waters. As soon as he left, everything went back to gold.
so that means that if roger waters is yoko of the beatles, john lennon is the roger waters of the beatles, then john lennon is yoko ono of the beatles???0_0
Then you certainly do not know there older work with syd barret, most of that was utterly crap. Meddle set a new era if you ask me because of echoes, tracks as san tropez and seamus are nearly fillers that were anything BUT good.
Darkside of the moon says it all..totally different band then before. The made lots of so so work too do not forget that. And this is the worst version of echoes i have heard so far.
This is a great song, but as described below on this live version it just doesn't fall in place like the early versions and the Gdansk/RAH performances. Great individual performances though and an interesting document if you're studying Floyd music.
100% agree with you, Fender. It doesn't have the spirit/depth of the Pompeii performance (for example) at all. It's like something's (someONE's?) missing.
They felt the same, which is why they stopped performing Echoes that tour. The extended Floyd band [the backing musicians] just didn't have have the background in improvisation with each other like the original members had with each other, so it didn't sound right.
@thegrudge usually, but not here. Gilmour is singing the higher register. I was glad they dropped Echoes from this tour because they sis a lousy job with it.
@grelch No man, i can distinctly hear Gilmour's voice, its the slightly lower one...the more dominant of the two. Wright is having a hard time hitting that higher tone here, so maybe it sounds like the lower one to you or vice versa
Sorry dude but you really are hearing this wrong. It's definitely Gilmour on the higher harmony and Wright on the lower. I'm not sure how you can be hearing Rick's voice as lower as his voice is very distinctive and it sure aint him! Also the fact that they swapped vocal parts in '87 has been well documented.
@thegrudge Haha!! You serious? Please go and research this man, whatever you THINK you're hearing, you're wrong. But you're obviously not going back down so good luck mate.
@mikec32001 Lol. I'm good on my research, but thanks anyways. Seriously though u got it backwards! Haha, its cool, i know your not gunna back down either. Oh well.
@Queenfan778 In the original version Wright sings the higher harmonie and Gilmour the lower............maybe Wright is no more able to sing as well as when he was younger
Not long ago i heard an interview with Gilmour and he himself said he was not at all happy with the 87 attempt at it....but felf they got it right in 07....P.S. pink floyd in any way shape or form is AWESOME!!!
I Love to watch Nick as he plays, he was the fuckin pimp of the group! All the long fur coats in the old days.... He just is always chillaxin back on the drums, with his lil shoulder roll! You Da Man Nick! Thanx for postin this, its great! Rehearsal, Perfect or not..... Perfect for me!
One thing I notice on the 1987 versions of Echoes is David and Rick swapped harmonies here. David was now singing Rick's original high parts and Rick was now singing David's lower parts on this version. The 1974/75 performances had female singers and saxophone which took away from the feel the 1971, 1972 and 1973 live versions had. I liked the 1987 versions of Echoes. The JFK performance was phenomenal, this wasn't bad as well. On DG's last tour, thank God he did this classic
Right on. I wondered why they switched to Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I have a tape somewhere of the JFK Show. I'll see if I can dig that up and post it. As I recall. The feel of the song as an opener, was to highlight just the four band members before breakout the rest of the band.
Between the two tours, I thought this tour was better. And I'm very happy that Gilmour covered Echoes on his last tour. Great Song.
I totally agree about this tour being better than the 94 tour. There was just something about it in 1987 that felt better. I guess partially because they were trying to prove themselves after all the troubles with Roger, etc.
