  • Let's play a game Esmeralda.

You will be hang or You will be fucked by priest.

Make your choise. Who is worse?

  • I feel so sorry for this dude! He is deeply in love and is asking for love or rather, is asking the possibility to love even without being loved back! I guess he deserve to be loved he is ready to follow her to hell, what do you girls want?

  • HOLY SHIT! Yes I say YES (;

  • @yanira13 me too!! D: Stupid Esmeralda and stupid Asshole-Phoebus...... ¬¬

  • Daniel Lavoie is the best frollo. Even though he is seen as the antagonist, I just can't help put still pity him.

  • I guess you all will say, that i'm wrong, but i think, that russian Frollo is better than franch. There are more passion and suffering in russian Frollo, and it looks more believable.

  • I think they are superb. This is magnificent scene, such (melo)drama. Poor poor Esmeralda, though!

  • Daniel touches my wounds with his acts and voice...but I want him to hurt me more <3

  • "The tomb or my bed?"

For this Frollo, hell, he wouldn't need to ask me!

  • If I was Esmeralda, I would of wanted to be with Frollo. Honestly I think he's just a guy looking to be loved.

  • If somebody is inexpressive in original cast, I would say it's Helene as Esmeralda, especially comparing to Julie Zenatti - passion in her voice and moves makes me thrill.

  • when he opens the door she turns around and is like: dammit it was open all the time?

  • Frollo is like a little hurt child. It's so cute.

  • 2:22

I love how strong and powerful she sounds trying to keep him from raping her. -.-'

  • 0:53 is my favorite - how gorgeous. Does anyone know an English or just translated version of this whole musical that I can watch? :( I REAALLY want to watch it all!

  • Well... I know which one I would chose!

  • Esmeralda : Approche toi, assassin... Eloigne toi, oiseau de malheur.

    Faut savoir, ma vieille :3

  • Commédiiiie en force (y) hihi

  • Damn, what a voice!

  • The tomb or my bed?

    Fuck off mate.... :L

  • Anyone else notice he was staring at her ass at 1:03?

  • Frollo you dog :P giving Esmeralda a choice of either death or to sleep with you lol

  • French version is best. Italian Frollo is way too over the top for me. Lavoie...you can see the pain on his face, hear it in his voice, see it in his movements. He doesn't need to make it over the top for people to understand how Frollo's feeling.

  • @GaelicFreak Have you read the book? I did and I can say that Matteucci is the perfect Frollo ever!

That's because is really broke from love and hate.

The expressions on his face, the mad love in his eyes, the cruel, imploring desparation in his voice... everything in Hugo's Frollo you can find in Matteucci's interpretation.

  • @Loubna59

    ..yes and so?

The story is the story, the characters are the characters and Matteucci is really close to Frollo.

Lavoie could be a good singer, but no more, is not an actor, at firts, and hasn't the fisique du role too (he's too old, Frollo was 35).

Same thing for Esmeralda. Argentinian singer Lola Ponce is better because she's merry and lively and full of life exactly as Esmeralda is.

Matteucci and Ponce are the best couple for this musical.

  • ESMERALDA Y I'M NOT YOU??! (except for the fact that i'll never wait for Phoebus...Stupid girl!)

And Daniel's face at 1:04 T-T srsly, he's the best Frollo ever.

  • Ahahaha!

  • This bit, with the preceding visit, is my favourite of the whole show. One thing--he begs for a moment of HAPPINESS (bonheur), not "pleasure" (plaisir). Makes it even more pathetic and touching.

  • @ninetyweeks I also love this scene. However Frolo also says "c'est la tombe ou mon lit" (it's the tomb or my bed), makes it clear in what he is interested.... I think they just used "bonheur" instead of "plaisir" for the rhyme with "oiseau de malheur" but they are pretty much synonyms to me.

  • @melpacifique

True, but nooooo... I want my Romantic!Frollo. :) Rationalisation: he doesn't DARE ask, expect, anything more than "un instant" (one fling, one encounter etc.) And how did he know once would be enough? ;)

  • @ninetyweeks Ahah ! Sorry to ruin your Frolo ^^. And I think he only asks for "un instant" because 1) he's a priest he is not suppose to touch women at all 2) You can see Esmeralda reaction to his proposition, can you imagine if he had ask for more ?

Also I was just wondering : are you french ?

  • @melpacifique Canadienne ici! Et toi?

  • @ninetyweeks Francaise !

  • he IS rather desperate, isn't he?

  • I love how at 2:30 Frollo touches his chest with his hands in the same spot where Esmeralda pushed him. It's like even though she's telling him that she'd rather die than be with him, amidst his anguish, he's still reveling with joy in the sheer fact that she touched him. It's such a subtle detail and can be easily overlooked, but it's small things like that which make this performance so ALIVE. It's beautiful, and moreover, it's something that book Frollo would have done. Just terrific!

  • @AuburnSnow Yes, this is my favourite part as well!! <3 Absolutely love the unique character Daniel creates!

  • Hum its like Frollo is also like Esmeralda where he too is naive with love

  • Ça, c'est ce qu'on appelle un vent !

  • matteucci is the best !!

  • @danimaggots4ever Lol, vous me faites rire !

  • @Loubna59 e tu mi fai piangere

  • @danimaggots4ever Je suis navrée je ne comprends pas la langue. :)

  • Matteucci is the best!

  • i think lavoie is awesome.. and i love this song too.. what id love to see is a duet of him and esmeralda, but a different song hehe :)) where they would be happy together hehe:))))

BRAVO.

  • Am I only one that actually feels sorry for Frollo (his character)....? It must be horrible to fall in love when it's forbidden (even nowdays).

I LOVE the people who play the roles, they really give it all and feel the emotions of charaters. Lavoie actually can show every feeling of love, lust, anger, hatred and holding back with his voice, face and hands. Thank you, for making such an amazing musical to LIVE!

  • @TakeADriftWhitMe I don't feel sorry for him. Because regardless of his position, he should know better - especially being a man of God. He knows murder, rape, false accusation is wrong - but he decides to do it anyway. If he truly loved Esmeralda, he would accept her rejection without question and certainly not frame her for murder or try to kill others for her. On top of that, he treats Quasimodo, his adopted son, with disdain. He even revels in his killing Esmeralda at the end! That's evil!

  • @EmilyGreene1984 He is insane. He starts out as a good, kind, noble person. He treats Quasimodo the best out of anybody up until Esmeralda. Frollo's vows and sexual repression, along with the fact that Quasimodo (and in the novel, his brother Jehan), his son figures, are turning from God, is too much for him. He isn't acting rationally.

He is not evil. He is mentally disturbed and aggravated by his position.

  • Here is where Frollo is evil, he would give Esme her freedom in exchange for sex? Like all priests!

  • You gotta love Daniel's expressions throughout this scene. They love and pain he feels for Esmeralda...pure gold!

Mdr

  • Italian version is excellent, but nothing beats this original cast. Lola and Helene are both great Esmeraldas, but Italian Quasimodo and Frollo are weaker.

  • @PlusSizeAngel could you plz tell me where i can watch the italian version .. i've been lookin' everywhere for it...

  • @doaasamy1 Unfortunately it is just now taken away from YouTube. It WAS here, but the channel was closed. There is still some videos in YouTube, uploaded by other users. Just write Notre Dame de Paris Italian.

  • Lady, you slept with the jerk who was cheating on his betrothed and who never loved you, the desperate priest is not a bad choice after that one.

  • @vitaani well she didn't sleep with Phoebus, he was going to when Frollo stabbed him because he could not bear seeing another man touching her. And the naive Esmeralda until the end always thought that Phoebus loved her and was going to rescue her.

  • I bought this DVD from amazon....it'`s great, I love it very much! :-)

  • You can hear the desperation in both of their voices, it's heartbreaking for both of them.

  • is this a dvd?

    where can i get it?

  • @vanessahdepp1 Yes this is from a DVD. I just got mine on Saturday from Amazon.com. I was able to get it for $30 on there and shipping was 3 dollars I believe. I would definitely buy it. It's more than worth it!! :)

  • Esmeralda's "sun" is just a coward, he prefers save his reputation, and she still thinks that he will save her. But she is brave, she keeps all her honor by refusing his "deal"

If I were at her place, I chose Frollo, 'cause Daniel is so hot ^^

    ( Sorry for my english, I'm french :p )

  • I agree with everyone. He did such an awesome job with this character. It's really touching and he really portrayed the struggle that Frollo went through! It's so sad to see Esmeralda not care about his feelings and only about Phoebus :( Bravo to Daniel on a job well done!!

  • Lavoie is the perfect guy to play frollo's role.

The italian guy is not that good, he's constantly watching the audiance (instead of Esmeralda).

What's more, he is too expressive, which is not realistic.

  • Daniel Lavoie , tout simplement : Pfiouh!!!!! Oo

  • It's kinda painful to hear her sing about Phoebus when you just heard him say he's gonna get her hanged.

  • AHH...i love this song

  • With all the respect for Lola Ponce, I prefer surely this Esmeralda: when she threatens Frollo, she's great.

  • The gallows or my bed...

Poor Frollo, i love you soooo much! He's going to cry! He's never had a love for anyyting he had always been pure! Esmeralda! Come on!

  • I'm italian, nevertheless I appreciate Lavoie's version. Actually, I prefer Matteucci just for the Frollo he represents. Matteucci represent an evil priest, a real devil, more similar to the Frollo that Hugo describe. Lavoie shows I think another Frollo: less self-assured, taciturn and unable to face his feelings and rage. For some points he is similar to the "original", if you wish, Frollo.

This doesn't marvel me... U know, Italian are more passionate and "folkloristic" unlike French I think.

  • Its such a serious song yet they play such childlike music in the background :P

  • After seeing some comments that daniel is unexpressive in his role,.. I thought so too, at first. however, after watching this performance in its entirety, i can see that daniel was trying to makes us more sympathetic to Frollo. he conveys more than the usual lust/anger/hypocrisy.

He makes us feel WHY Frollo is the way he is, how horribly damaged, sad, lonely, and needy he is, the pathos and sympathy he can illicit for this Frollo is amazing. A sensitive, in depth portrayal of Frollo by Daniel

  • @mammylove1 Exactly what I've been saying! I can't believe ppl can accuse this man of being unexpressive! he brings forth Frollo's demon and wrestle with it in all the songs he sings of Esmeralda, "Tu Vas Me Detuire" is a perfect example.

  • i absolutely love it, though i don't find it rational at all that he loves her so much and accuses her to death.. i guess its the jealousy and knowing he will never be able to have her, those things only want to make him vanish her...

  • Can't get this song out of my head!

I think this is the pinnacle of Esmeralda's character growth. Even though she's still stupidly in love, she shows her courage and integrity.

I love "je mords comme un chien." Could listen to this song all day.

  • Comment removed

  • Frollo's my favorite :D

In Esmeralda's place, I would have chosen him.

  • aww poor Frollo, he just needs a hug, badly, lol.

Seriously though, daniels performance was amazing. He really for me, embodies the awkward, repressed, barely contained sexuality of a man stunted by religion and idealism. A pot ready to bol over. Pathos, and passion.. he illicits sympathy for a character you really shouldnt be rooting for, but do. M. x

  • superb!

  • LOL! D

  • Oh, please! I would go with Frollo because Daniel Lavoie is hot!!!

  • Okay, if I had been Esme, this is what I had done: pretend to go with Frollo and then escape. Psychology, dear girl, psychology!

  • @RoseBurgundy Don't forget what century it was. Esmeralda did the right thing. She didn't lose her honor.

  • Oh I understand there was danger to be raped before escape and in 15th century there was this delightful idea of rape victim losing her "purity"... Would gypsies take her back, if she was raped, and what if she get pregnant? But I am just such coward... idea of being brutally murdered wins danger of rape in horor.

  • Comment removed

  • Horror, not "horor". Geez!

  • @RoseBurgundy If she had been raped, she might have been taken back. But not if she had willingly gone with him.

  • Well, I think a person who blackmails someone to bed by death threat is a rapist. But I know even nowadays many people would say: "But she said yes!" However, if I were Esme, I would try psychology. I would say "Yes" and hope he would help me out of the jail. Then I would try to escape out of Paris... and go back to Andalusia!

  • Before he manages to do anything, I mean.

  • @RoseBurgundy But she didn't say "Yes" and by doing so, she showed all her strength and courage. Hear the music again: "Tu ne me fais pas peur" - "You are not frightening me". There are things far much worse than death. And one of them is a dishonor. If she had said yes, she would've been dishonored.

  • Yes, she threatened to kill him and I think there is worse things than death. However, I think Esmeralda would not have been dishonored, even if she had said "yes". Let´s just agree to disagree.

  • if she went willingly it would not be called Rape. Rape is when one person is unwillingly doing something sexual with the other person

  • @RoseBurgundy

They are gypsies, and their whole thing is how the court of miracles accepts all the rejects. If they have whores, they certainly wouldn't reject Esmeralda who was "their queen."

  • Hey, all the more reason for Esme to play time! Dangerous game and I feel bad for her, but still...

  • And like I said, even IF she had said yes, using death threats to get sex from unwilling person makes Esmeralda innocent victim, not whore, in my eyes. Play time, Esmeralda, play time!

  • Wow, that was hugely dramatic! Ugly sets and costumes, but wow, the music and emotion! Poor Esmeralda, guilty of no crime except empty-headedness, physically tortured, still hoping that sleazy slimy Phoebus saves her, the silly girl! And Daniel Lavoie is indeed excellent as mentally tortured tragic monster Frollo.

  • This song is gorgeous, starting out with such tinkly, light, happy music as he talks about falling for her, and when it gets darker an darker the music stays the same, spine-chilling...

Of course Frollo's being a creep here, and Esme's an idiot for trusting "her sun", but you really can't blame her for her anger, although you do feel sorry for Frollo.

And guys, let's remember that in-universe, no one can hear his gorgeous voice and the love confession isn't as romantic as Daniel makes it.

  • i love how he looks at her at 1.03- 1.06!!!! xxx

  • tu mourras de mes maaaains! (8)

  • dont you just have a way with words...

  • well he's singing let me just once. maybe I sad it a little flat but he is singing it

  • Good choice... I'd take Gringoire =3

  • I adore both Lavoie and Matteucci in the role of Frollo and I think they both give great interpretations of the character. Lavoie is very stiff, but I feel like his body language conveys how horribly repressed he is and his desire to keep his emotions in check. Matteucci, on the other hand, it more passionate and visibly tortured, which also works.

Either way, I love this show in both French and Italian!

  • NataliadaCali, please, post a link here with the Italian version...I can't find it, I don't know why ! :-(

  • Search for un mattina ballavi

  • Thank you, Myrosegardengirl ! :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @Coletta100

Look for the video of un mattina ballavi that was posted by "paradiso64". It has a dramatic dialogue between Frollo & Esmeralda before he starts singing. This is my favorite rendition. And in the more info section upper right, you can read the lyrics in Italian. I can't believe I never heard of this musical up until 3 months ago. All the songs are so beautiful.

  • @Coletta100

Sorry Coletta100 = regarding the lyrics, "bennydark's" version has the lyrics listed in the "more info" section.

  • Lol, myrosegardengirl, thank you a lot ! :-)

  • The way he rubs his chest and looks so sad when she says no...ARGH! SOMEONE HUG DANIEL, PLEASE! ):

  • I'll take up with this mission.:)

  • LMFAO, RangerofAnor ! I hug YOU, you're soooo cute ! ;-)

  • @RangerofAnor I will!

  • Beautiful song as all NDDP songs,.I´m f$%&/ing obsessed with this musical.

  • she hates him ;)

  • I've seen plenty of people who are ambiguous about Lavoie, but the only people that I've seen actively disliking him are Italians. =/

I think that Lavoie, Maralukin, and Matteucci all put on top rate performances. Personally, I don't agree with those that say Lavoie was unexpressive. When compared to the other two, yes, he was rather subdued, but that does not necessarily equate to being a bad actor. I think he simply tried to convey more than anger, lust, and hatred in the role.

  • more over in this role he is a priest anyway for me he is the best singer and maybe man in this show

  • @Frollophile

definitely agree. I think Lavoie created really emotional, expressive and deeply touching character. The fact that an actor doesn`t have hysterically pictoral manners and demonic style to express fillings and still touching heart, just says, up to me, that he is a really, really good actor :)

  • @Frollophile I think that the fact that all the people really dislike Lavoie are italian is strictly related to the fact that Matteucci is the best Frollo ever.

Maybe I agree with you, they are different, but think that comparing both the voice and the expressivity of Lavoie and Matteucci give the same result: Lavoie is definitly beaten.

  • Love love love it... Ca me donne des frisonns... Arggg j'♥ !!!

  • What's really weird is that Frollo is portrayed here (and in the book) as a sympathetic villain of sorts, and Phoebus is just a jerk ... whereas in the Disney version, Frollo is one of the evilest villains ever, and Phoebus is the 'good guy.'

  • Disney has always had a nack to making grey into black and white.

  • Cuz its for little kids. It's a lot easier for them to comprehend 'good guy' and 'bad guy'.

Don't get me wrong, when i was little i used to LOVE the disney version, but now i like this one much more of course. I still like the disney one, but i consider it an entirely different story altogether.

  • That's a shame. I mean, I know it's 'for little kids' and all, but you can make great stuff for kids and still hit adults too. Kids like ambiguity too!

  • ma no, dai!
