It's amazing how badly this show is set up. It's actually quite easy to notice the pattern, and the screens dont change very quickly at all. It's slower than "stacker"
one of the staff members did not originally want Mr. Larson to play because "he looked kinda shady", but the producers didn't really care and let him on the set. The rest, as they say, is history.
We actually went over this in class today. They caught on rather quickly, but they couldn't do a thing cause he wasn't breaking any rules. The only thing he did was memorize the pattern as it truly is not random. If you listen to the "big scam" episode of this American life they interviewed his brother, ex-wife and producers of the show.
@00Yahiko No, he stopped it one cycle too early. If he does it the same way I did, using certain indicators on the board, anyway, 2-4 indicates it'll go 17-8 and then reset, the first one after 8 was 11, meaning that your safe choices are a fast 1-4 or relax, look for 17 and it'll bounce to 8 which is always safe. He stopped it ON 17 instead of right after. That's the same mistake he made on his last spin where he got the Bahamas trip and almost whammied.
@00Yahiko He obviously did. Since the first round didn't have the key free spins with the money, he didn't need to win anything there. His strategy needed the free spins.
Lol 3:46, Ed is getting a kick out of Michael winning a trip to Kauai.
And, what's up with their answers on the first question?:
The iron is hot, so why would cold water speed it up? Has Ed never ironed? And Michael is obviously just copying him, but why on earth would Janie answer "warm"??? If warm speeds it up, hot would obviously be faster. And same with cold. It is highly unlikely something in between would be fastest.
@Gold13n13gg If you were to accidentally get a whammy, you'd lose all your money. It's management of risk. You pass you spins so you won't lose your money, but then the person you pass them to may get a higher score, and leave you with nothing.
this guys is a freacking BADASS!!!!! my new hero, now I knwo what I should do, stay in my hoem all day taping gameshowsto look for patterns and memorize them.
What's so great is that he looks like such a dark horse at first, but you can tell he's just manipulating the first few minutes of the game to set up the payoff.
@TheYTLiberator Pretty much, yeah... Watched the show enough to where he memorized the "random" sequence of lights and such, and got off with 100K+ in the end. Kudos to him.
@TheYTLiberator The lights were NOT random. There were at the time, 5 patterns of 18 spaces; after his episodes, they upped it to eventually 32 patterns so someone else couldn't pull the same.
One of the patterns he would nail (think of the upper-left as #1 and go clockwise, 4th is 3K 4K 5K + spin, 8th is 500 1000 1500 + spin) was 2, 12, 1, 9, 4.
@TheYTLiberator Part of it was flashing lights but the huge part which allowed him to exploit it was that square 4 and 8 never had a whammy and they almost always had big money with a free spin. That mixed with perfect timing allowed him to "Beat" Press Your Luck.
lol whoever made this game was an idiot notice the fourth box on the top always has a 3,000 4,000 5,000 and 2,000 on it plus a free spin from there its just a matter of timing
notice how at 3:43 when he wins the Kauai trip, he initially looks disappointed for like a fraction of a second cause he knows he made a mistake... lol... I also heard is story on TAL and decided to check him out on you tube.

@mannyvelo - It is incredibly difficult to create a truly random sequence, and in 1984 it WAS impossible to do this using any sort of mechanical means. There is always a pattern. He figured out the pattern and practiced enough to make it 2nd nature.
I bet with what we know about this episode today, the Michael who won the home spin is probably like "......That cheap bastard could have easily gotten me $5000!"
You know ive tried to master the board by watching the eps its ALOT harder than people think, he did nothing wrong but if you watch his reaction he cheers before peter says what he gets so he knew Lol shame he died
