Hi Valentina, how do you practice so that pieces like this become so clear and accurate? What's your approach? Much respect Valentina, you have made me interested in classical music once again. Thankyou
@pianoprodigy987 The fingering and technique required for many pieces would make them very un-musical without use of sustain pedal; the markings are guidance, or to point out the spots where the composer intended the pedal be heard in every rendition. Many pieces have entire sections where the pedal is not marked, for the writer's convenience, or to indicate that any musical pedalling is appropriate. If you're following the (lack of) marks to the letter, you're not a very individual pianist.
@Twinkytoe yes but i am refering to pieces such as chopins etude op 25 no 9, op 10 no 4, rachmaninoffs prelude in g minor, and a great many pieces frrom liszt where using the sustain pedal would be way out of context if used where not marked. the use of sustain would make any of these pieces sound muddy and compeletly ruin the intentions of the composer, unlike waltzes and nocturnes, these fast pieces should nopt have an abusive sustain pedal, otherwise you are correct :)
@pianoprodigy987 Well, if we're talking specifics, I think Rach's Gm Prelude calls for pedalling in some places, and not in others, and the key thing with that piece is getting the pedalling just right, as opposed to avoiding it entirely. Liszt, I wouldn't claim any experience with. And the Chopin Etudes are again, about technique and precisely how the pedal is used as opposed to its actual presence.
@pianoprodigy987 Pedalling is about context too - I'd never pedal Mozart or Bach, for example, but here, it is entirely appropriate! It's very unlikely that Chopin and the like would had intended its use to be avoided, or for the depress-and-release directions to be totally stringent. Once the pedal became a key part of performance, as opposed to a new-fangled invention on more expensive pianos (in the very late classical era), it became part of interpretation - as well as the learning process.
@Twinkytoe well yes, the use of the pedal depends on the interperater as well as the sheet music but for a learner who might use the sustain without release should rely on the sheet music until the skill is refined. and yeas the Gm prelude by rachmaninoff should have the pedal to make the piece sound more powerful but when used contantly throughout the piece can make it very difficult to make out the accual notes that rachmaninoff intended people to hear :)
@Twinkytoe to meet you half way, the vladimir horowitz interperatations of the ''heroic'' polonaise uses the pedal to make the piece sound much more powerful, yet does not abuse it to distort the sound, once you learn the to use the pedal the way the ssheets tll you to, you can then add on suattain to suit your vision of how the piece should sound. :)
@pianoprodigy987 That is ridiculous many composers did not write in pedaling notations as it depends on the sustain of the piano, where you play and whether or not you need to hit a chord or note beyond reach while maintaining legato/connected notes. Debussy certainly didn't write any in due to these issues. Beethoven called for the sustain pedal to be depressed fully throughout 1st mov. moonlight sonata, but with the longer sustains of today's modern pianos it would not work.
Wow! Your hands move gracefully and you play so elegantly!! I must say you're a wonderful and inspirational pianist! :D In fact, after watching you play I feel inspired to get back into playing piano myself. :)
In the beginning it sounds a bit rushed (more Etude than Walz), but by and and by the overall picture emerges and everything falls into its place and balance is found.
I don't think a teacher is always necessary, it's either you have that good sense of interpretation or not.... like in the above...a true artist :) no teacher should impose his interpretation over the student
@develish16: A professor give techniques according to the skill a student has ( no matter the big or small the hand size the student might have) and they are with the student to give to what they've experienced throughout their lives practicing and performing. The student is going to improve the next time he or she plays the piano after practicing with the correct techniques. Interpretation will be performed exactly the way the composers have on their sheet; that's what they both do.
@ValentinaLisitsa Hi! I'm 12 and I've been playing the Piano since I was 3....You're my idol! How many years did it take you to become such an amazing performer? :)
To be honest Valentina Lisitsa, this valse in e minor, for me practicing it to play it well.... Takes me a good long time to have it perfect with memory.
I love watching this piece played! For some reason it just makes me laugh a little, no disrespect to Chopin intended, but the very light and speedy sound of it makes me want to just get up and dance haha
Once again you show us a wonderful interpretation! I've got a question though, In most of your videos you play Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Beethoven. Do you also play Bach? How important is Bach in your studying?
Valentina, please PLEASE record Chopin's Polonaise in G-sharp Minor Op. Posthumous. That is one of my favorite pieces like ever, and I know you would play it more beautifully than anyone else.
I usually just watch your vidz, thinking they're stunning. But i've got to say and post this is truly breathtaking ! Mind you, your charm certainly adds up to the performance too :-)
These waltzes are sometimes so bright and sometimes melancholy. They remind me of the love of my youth(and a little more) who also played the piano and took ballet – altogether a dilettante .
Any prospects of performing in Detroit? Our orchestra has canceled all of its performances for the rest of the year. The musicians turned down a 30% pay cut and tremendously increased education and community outreach responsibilities.
You have got have one of the best techniques on piano i've ever seen! I'm an amatuer pianist, and I will be on the local radio soon. Do you have any tips for me on performing and especially technique? Please respond!
@MrCapacitors yea of course they are not edited, by "live" i just meant in front of an audience, which is probably much more difficult because you are nervous and stuff, and if you make a mistake you can't try again and later chose the video which gets published. (i really dont want to downgrade valentinas performance in any way, i love her playing, too)
when are you coming to Netherland theres a lott of people who loves Classic MUSIC like me and i think youre very very very Great and as i can see it on youre face that you really love this Part of Frederic Chopin Master work this is one of my favorite Classic music and i wonder if you played the

@pianor91 When she gets an overseas agent apparently :) Don't worry, it surely can't be long before some huge record label signs her!!! And then, the world will be her oyster!! xD
@ValentinaLisitsa Amazing Valentina ! You inspire me very much . I wanted to ask you ...what zodiac sign are you? I'm just curious :-D I'm guessing Taurus or Leo xD
@JoTGermany It matters because Valentina is not yet recognized as one of the greats and I wanted to be a voice in her favor. When you hear several greats like Horowitz playing the same piece and Lisitsa's version is your favorite, that means something - especially when other share that opinion. Since this a Chopin piece, I thought I'd mention the only Chopin work that, in my opinion, is best played by Cziffra but that even in this piece, some believe Lisita's performance is the best.
Marvelous, once again! There is a certain cleanliness with which you play that really sets you apart. Most performers of these virtuoso pieces allow the notes to mush together. In addition, you have the most exquisite dynamic control, and your use of rubato is always genuine, never over-done or indulgent (at least to my ears).
Just a suggestion....someone should really polish the beautiful piano, I can see a lot of hand and fingerprints on it. But, I really like you and your wonderful playing!
@sweetcharlie63 may I suggest you find ustream.com live feed from this session .You will enjoy it :-) There were tons of comments on piano tuner wrinkled shirt , dirty piano , my shoes - or lack of them... i thoguht it was really funny:-)
@ValentinaLisitsa...thanks for replying, although I don't really worry about such things. I just have a keen eye. I really enjoy your playing. I would love to see you perform live. But, I doubt you'll be in St. Louis, Missouri any time soon.
I love the speed/dexterity/tempo of the piano playing. This is a completely flawless and magical performance. Incredible technique as always. Simply wonderful.
@JaneGirl20 F # minor polonaise was cruelly taken from me - whaaaah! - by another pianist who wanted to play it. So I didn't learn it . it is the only polonaise missing from my repertory right now.
In my opinion, you play Chopin perfectly!

As usual, your performance is better than every other one I've heard. One exception: I think Cziffra's Chopin etude op.25 #12 "Ocean" is amazing.
Fret not: on his video (watch?v=JKSsdtzByKs) of that piece, someone said yours was the best.

@8Ho03EdONl1liL and what does it matter? theres no competition for me
JoTGermany 1 year ago
@JoTGermany It matters because Valentina is not yet recognized as one of the greats and I wanted to be a voice in her favor. When you hear several greats like Horowitz playing the same piece and Lisitsa's version is your favorite, that means something - especially when other share that opinion. Since this a Chopin piece, I thought I'd mention the only Chopin work that, in my opinion, is best played by Cziffra but that even in this piece, some believe Lisita's performance is the best.

Dear Valentina
Thank you very much for offerig us such beautiful pieces.
Will you ever come play in Paris? I think Salle Pleyel or Theatre des Champs-Elysées should fit you perfectly:)
By the way, not playing on your usual Bosendorfer for once?
jeromed98 1 year ago
@jeromed98 Bosendorfer stayed at home - it is a very long trip from North Carolina to Hannover:-)

Really wonderful playing! Do you know the F# minor Polonaise? Would love to hear how you play that one!
JaneGirl20 1 year ago 2
@JaneGirl20 F # minor polonaise was cruelly taken from me - whaaaah! - by another pianist who wanted to play it. So I didn't learn it . it is the only polonaise missing from my repertory right now.
