i work in teaching english as a foreign language in vietnam.(i know, no caps) and i can tell you in 5+ years of doing it, the system here was designed to not teach. ok, ok, students learn literacy early but then spend their academic lives learning useful things like calligraphy and rote memorization to the extent that college applicants must qualify by perfect memorization of hundred word texts, while systemically being frowned apon for any critical thinking or innovation.
@MrFingersniffer In high school (in Portugal in the 70's) I was fooled into believing that memorization was somewhat reprehensible and not real learning. Now I find it extremely difficult to learn difficult foreing languages (I had to give up Japanese) as memorizing. Critical thinking is very important, absolutely, but there's a place for memory exercises too.

I have known several people in my life who IQ tested genius and yet did not possess one personal original thought. They knew a lot of info and that's about it. On the other hand I am completely original thinking and I tested high in IQ, but I know very little. So little that I have trouble trying to articulate my thoughts into words others can understand.
I'm somewhat confused about what kind of IQ test those "genial" people you know did. I've only done one in my late teens and quite a lot of it was logic based, and there's absolutely no way that someone who just has a great memory would do particularly well in one of those.

I remember some incidents that happened when I was in high school. My science teacher went ballistic when she was forced to teach us in a dumbed down manner. She rebelled and one of the ways she fought back was by teaching us sex education which was against public school education rules. She almost got fired but she still rebelled. The same thing happened with my social study teacher. He went so ballistic that my school department caved in and allowed him to teach the way he wanted to teach.
To hell with the education system ... if you arent teaching your kids right at home you can blame yourself. My kid is anti-green and is not learning Spanish before English. I was reading about how schools in Europe are ran, especially Belgium. They sound much better than American public schools. They prepare their students for the job market right out the door. It is ridicolous what goes on in this country. The Belgian students get free access to any college or university of their choosing as long as they have 1 of their 5 different diploma types. But they still give them the skills needed to be prepared to work right out of their version of highschool.
I also don't think it is a funding issue. The American public education system gets millions of dollars. With the amount of money it gets we should all have gotte excellent educations that would have nearly equaled a college education. A public school education in America in the 50's is equal to college education. That is no longer the case. Most jobs which sound like you could do them with just a high school education want 1-2 years of college. I guess because the public school crank out morons

I remember a shift in my education in about 1969 when the structure of the classroom changed and the teacher kept a box of 'Sociables' crackers with her and would use these crackers as rewards for correct answers. We could then choose which of the 5 shapes we wanted and at that time - Sociables had peanuts in the mix so we also had that as a choice. I remember not liking the crackers and I was belittled for not accepting my reward like the other children. I was moved to another classroom.

We have college graduates who cannot spell on a 5th grade level. 4 years at a Big Ten institution with Dean's List grades just may qualify you for a job in shipping...er...."logisitics" if you're lucky. I remember some incidents that happened when I was in high school. My science teacher went ballistic when she was forced to teach us in a dumbed down manner. She rebelled and one of the ways she fought back was by teaching us sex education which was against public school education rules. She almost got fired but she still rebelled. The same thing happened with my social study teacher. He went so ballistic that my school department caved in and allowed him to teach the way he wanted to teach.

My 2nd grader reads at a 7th grader level and knows division multiplication and even square roots. Sky is the limit when you take 20 minutes a day. Fuck the system.

@Marine If your child belongs at the pace the school system is going ( backwards) then don't spend 20 minutes a day UN-doing the harmful training the school system is doing because they only want you smart enough to push buttons and pull levers. I like most people do about 5-15 mph over the speed limit asking my child how much faster over the speed limit I'm going was a simple way for her to learn double digit subtraction at 4 years old.

I was reading about how schools in Europe are ran, especially Belgium. They sound much better than American public schools. They prepare their students for the job market right out the door. It is ridicolous what goes on in this country. The Belgian students get free access to any college or university of their choosing as long as they have 1 of their 5 different diploma types. But they still give them the skills needed to be prepared to work right out of their version of highschool.

I also don't think it is a funding issue. The American public education system gets millions of dollars. With the amount of money it gets we should all have gotte excellent educations that would have nearly equaled a college education. A public school education in America in the 50's is equal to college education. That is no longer the case. It has failed, it is no longer a question of if it is failing. It is failing the students and the country as a whole. A high school diploma is worthless now. I suspect it has been that way for a while. Most people just look at it like a GED. The school are not teaching the students anything they can use to make a living.
