we're in the military. we do things different. and that's what we were taught. mind you in the scenario he asks how long he's been down. and he said 5 minutes. so i'm pretty sure its already been the 5th cycle by the time we show up. the scenario is for when we show up as EMS.
dude is checking for a pulse while 2nd officer does compressions. refer back to bioscience basics. he will be palpating a artificial pulse.

Actually, you never withhold a AED for BLS...as long as chest compressions have been in progress for at least 2 min...
