Jason sings from the heart with emotion and feeling and is the true sound of Chicago. Cetera has a bigger ego than voice.Comparee ason in the late 80s .He blows Cetera away..
@redbird241 ....your name should be stupid bird241.....peter Cetera left Chicago because he was to good for them and he didn't like the pat they were going and he knew that he would be better off as a solo his ego is big because he has the best voice .. so get your story straight and don't be a hater because you love Chicago and when he left he broke your heart and you cried like a douche ...thanks
Currently, Peter Cetera does this this in a lower key than the studio version. He also skips the key change at the end. Maybe Chicago should give Jason a break and do the same thing. All singers lose some top end as they age. It is a fact of life. The same reason why you don't see men in their 50s and 60s playing major league baseball.
I just clicked over from a live performance where Jason KILLED this song. This is a crappy comparison. Both are great singers, but Jason's voice is just different. He'll never sound like Peter. Peter was NOT a better or worse live singer than Jason. Jason gets compared to Peter's studio recordings and Peter can't hit those notes anymore. He changes the key to his songs. This is not uncommon, but again, it's just not a fair comparison. If you never liked Jason you probably never will.
wow...this isn't even close to fair. you guys are comparing a very, very recent video of jason while you're showing a video of peter still in the band for god's sake.
Conn dean, you are an idiot who obviously do not know a damn thing about music...just shut up already if you dont have a clue .Nobody can sing like Peter Cetera .......................................Yes that is Period.....lol
can you imagine this poll ssaying this: "Peter or P C Mobley"? i think one of the comments who is rewferring to "that other guy" is talking about Billy Champlin, My peronal answer is "Chicago" even though my guy "R Lamm" did not have much to do with the entire album. i love all of their stuff even Mobley.
This isn't a fair comparison. You take the one performance where PC decided to actually show up and compare it to one of the first performances by JS. If you look at contemporary performances of the same Chicago song by PC and JS, I dare say you will find that the latter is superior. I have been a Chicago fan for as long as they were a band, and Jason is by far superior to Peter, in my humble opinion.
Personally, I like Jason's voice and his style. Peter Cetera, on stage, seems a little stiff with the way he hardly opens his mouth when singing, although I believe this is due to him singing with a broken jaw many years ago. I do agree though that since Peter was the original singer on these tunes, his voice is more natural sounding. However, I would feel the same way if Jason Scheff was part of the band when they were first formed.
Vodude is right. He adds something. Even so, the songs were written by Chicago with Peter Cetera in mind. His vocals are more relaxed as they should be since he was there when they wrote them. Appears more natural.... my suggestion... Jason/Chicago write some new stuff with Jasons range, talent, and gifts in mind. Move into the future! Love you guys!!!
I like Jason & I don't think Chicago could've picked a better replacement than him cuz not only did he sound alot like Peter but he also played bass (like Cetera) which made him a perfect choice. But there's only one Peter Cetera & he not only has one of the most distinct voices in pop/rock but can also sing circles around most other crooners including Jason. So there is really no contest here. Jason is good but you just can't beat the original baby.
They should not be compared with each other because they're both good in their own ways. The song was originally sung by Peter Cetera. And aside from that, his video was taken when he was still young. While Jason's was taken when he was a bit older. So there should be no comparison.
How did a wonderful song, sung by Peter Cetera become a nightmare in the end? Boo-hiss! Please, go back and find the original footage then do right by this song! ~ Janet Thompson Deaver
You're comparing Peter Cetera in his prime singing in an auditorium to Jason Scheff when he was past his prime singing outdoors in downtown Las Vegas. I personally think Cetera is one of the top 3 male singers ever, but this is not a fair comparison at all.
Oh my goodness...Peter Cetera STILL HAS IT! Blows Jason out of the water...not to mention its cold out and Cetera is older...He definitely sounds better! :o) It would seem to me that Jason is trying much to had to accomplish what just comes naturally to Peter Cetera.
Oh my goodness...Peter Cetera STILL HAS IT! Blows Jason out of the water...not to mention its cold out and Cetera is older...He definitely sounds better! :o)
You should post a more recent Jason vs. Peter. J has come a long way in imitating the great Peter. I give it to Jason just because he stuck it out and has been with the band longer.
Something you may not know about Jason. He has had a singing coach throughout his career. He was in Seth Riggs office one day and Michael Jackson was sitting next to him, both waiting their turns with this phenomenal coach. Jason said Michael was a bit shy, but cordial. Jason's vocal chops are stronger every year because he continues to practice, even though he's singing with the band a good portion of the year. To me, that's dedication to keep it strong for music lovers and fans.
I don't know who I would have chosen when they were in their 20s because I didn't hear Jason sing in his 20s. But as they are both much older than that today Jason as a near 50 year old singer sings Peters ass under the damn table today. as a mid 50 years old singer Peter sucks egg big time. You would not want Peter singing in Chicago today. That is why Steve Perry stopped because he can't do what he used to when he was younger
Peter wins hands down reguardless of the fact that he sung it first. Fact is Cetera has a way better voice any one with ears can see that. Someone said this is biased biased how. Try and find a video of Jason doing this song better than Cetera good luck
Both singers have something that fans like. Not everyone likes coca cola, some prefer pepsi, but they're both great beverages. Same with performers. Peter cuts off his notes, where Jason holds out the notes he sings. When you sing live, there are going to be some errors, but overall, my favorite is Jason who has proven his loyalty to Chicago. And the band just keeps on playing. Go Chicago
I saw Jason Scheff on the Chicago 18 tour. Right out of the box he had vocal problems. Tough vocals for anyone to cover. And after 20+ years, I can imagine it's worse now. But to be fair, this footage of Cetera is twenty-five years old. If Pete does this tune anymore, I'll wager that it's in a different key nowadays.
Well this video is obviously biased bigtime! I've heard Jason sing all night and he was very good. This is obviously one of Jason's worst performances but then again He probably was totally strained because of constant touring. Show the whole picture and not a half truth.... Shows immaturity.
Always a *lovely* experience to hear Jason sing this live at the end of the night when his pipes were shot (didn't take long) and he sang flat. His range wasn't big enough and he *did* try to hard... big huge mess. :X
there is all this blah blah blah about dont compare because they have different styles....... the only style that matters is the style of chicago, this really wasnt a fair fight to anyone who has been listening to chicago for 35 years such as myself. as far as i was concerned i tried to be a chicago fan from 18 to the present but i its like peanutbutter and jelly, you cant replace either one of those ingredients without making another sandwich.........
I'm a fan of both, but we the people who really know Chicago will prefer the Peter because he was first in the group. Jason has done an amazing job replacing Peter. But I'll tell you this, I'm 29 years old and I show this comparison to my 20 year old cousins without telling them who was the original singer and without exeption Jason won all of them!!!
Even by today's standards, Chicago Transit Authority in 1969 was edgey ROCK/FUSION thanks to Terry Kath. Peter Cetera led the band into the sappy ballady Chicago Band as it is known today. For that I am pissed.
Jason got boned on this comparison. He is a great singer and the perfect replacement for Cetera, the egomaniac who left the greatest band in the world. Where is James Pankow on the Las Vegas show? It's not Chicago without James Pankow! I'm an original Chicago fan and love the original boys including Peter but you cannot compare these two shows.
Ummm.. No "competition" here... Peter Cetera rules!! While this is a bit of a sappy song, Pete's voice is in EVERY way SUPERIOR to ANYTHING Jason has EVER brought to the table.. Sorry... Cetera's vocal range (even at 65) ABSOLUTELY leaves Jason's in the dirt... STOP trying to compare apples with oranges..
Cetera got lured into the solo gig thing because of his ego and he left Chicago. Scheff has been great replacement for Cetera. Both guys have ocassional pitch issues, especially when singing as high as they do. Cetera has nothing on Scheff. They are both great singers and perfomers. Peter simply shouldn't have let his ego get the best of him. He left a good thing. That's the simple truth.
Jason could not come close to Peter even on his best day, especially singing through his nose. If Peter was to return to the group, it would no longer be a tribute group to themselves, but a bonafide hit making group once again, and the vitality oaand original sound would once again be present.
Either way, they both are good. Nice mix. I like the the way the horns have evolved over the years, getting much more "punchy" and flavorful. Both singers sound great, no matter what the year. It would be nice to see Peter join the band just one more time, for old time sake, side by side with Jason and the others. ahhh wishful thinking. I would pay goooood money to see that.
'Ol Peter should have never left the band. He knew he had the voice in giving Chicago it's boost in all of their songs. Really quite not the same after he left. Bottom line! :)
It is hard... To Compare the 1980's version of this song when it was fresh and new and then the more modern version where expectations are high to sound the same as the 1980's. There is a 20 year gap that cannot be replaced or matched....I mean, even Peter can't sound like this anymore and the 2008 Jason is probably the closest person I know that can sound like the 1985 Peter did... But what do you think?
u're right! these 2 versions cannot be compared. I wish everyone stop comparing Jason with Peter! I'm a fan of BOTH! They each have their own sound! I've heard them both LIVE. Peter still does a remarkable job solo singing ths song LIVE anoo 2009, but you can HEAR the difference with the 80's in his voice and Jason is NOT even trying to sound like Peter, he just has his OWN sound which I love the most!
What is the big deal? Peter is the original and the other guy is trying to sing like him. He is forcing his voice and he sounds like someone is squeezing his balls.
Great comments. PCetera is definitely the bonafide original. He can't be beat. Does anyone know what the deal was with the breakup with Chicago? It seems so ambiguous. My theory is that other band members wld not allow Cetera to dictate and the breakup was acrimonious. They all seem very tight lipped about the thing over the years. Regardless, Scheff is an imitator.
Of course it's Peter (the best) however, Jason is probably the best replacement when you really think about how hard it is to replace P.C. Jason really does deserve credit. To be honest neither Peter nor Jason can really sound great singing this song anymore- in their older age. Shame we all have to get old, lol.
Jason Scheff cannot sing in tune to save his life. Cetera owns him vocally. PC is a world class singer and bassist, JS is a world class bass player. That simple.
Peter is the best but he is too old to come back to Chicago now. Everything he performs now is in a lower key. Peter prove me wrong and come back to Chicago. I know you don't need the money, but the fans that made you a wealthy man want to see you with Chicago again.
Casi siempre las comparaciones son odiosas, pero en éste caso, vale comentar que existe una amplia diferencia de talento y profesionalismo en favor de Peter Cetera.
Well...I'll always love this band. Thank God for albums! I was never much for live music. It's not easy to hit the right note every time. Especially when you're moving around. But honestly, I don't like to compair the two. Jason is Jason and Peter is Peter. Post Peter is ok. Pre Jason is better. I love more songs pre Jason. But I love a few post peter songs too. Jason needs to sing his own songs. Since Peter is gone, so should his songs.
when i saw chicago for the first time, 18 years ago, i thought that jason was peter...later i found that i was wrong! i admire jason, he is a great singer/bass player...but peter is much, much better...i think that the guy who writes the song is the only able to sing it...peter experienced the situations...wrote the song...and he sings with passion! jason just interpretes the song...he does a great job keeping the band alive, but peter gave them soul, with the original members...peter is best!
Well seems that all Cetera's fans has posted in here along these days...
I knew this tune sang by Cetera, so i tend to like Catera's version more. But Jason has done an excellent work and was the best to replace Cetera, not only tha voyce or bass skills, but on stage presence. And on it, he's far better than Cetera. And i still think: CETERA is mor individual. JASON is more group
I guess you've never heard Cetera play bass and even if the first two were true, Scheff would come out the loser because he's essentially a mimic of Cetera.
Although when he started with Chicago in 1986, Jason sounded really good, he hasn't sang in tune since 1994. Proof positive right here on this video. There's no comparison in the vocal department as Peter was always amazing and at over 60, still sounds great (proven by his live Christmas special this past year). On a technical level, Jason is a better bass player, but Cetera hasn't really played in years. In his prime though, Peter was a much better groove player and an true bass innovator
I know full well that he's been with the band since 1985, making him the longest-tenured lead singer, but it hasn't exactly been a productive run. He spent the first three years essentially imitating Cetera and by the time he found his own voice, the band was long past its heyday. Now the band is on the oldies circuit singing their old songs with a new album once a decade pretty much.
When Jason Pointed, He Pointed To Me, He Was Thinking "Your MotherF***** I Want You!" but I Was Like "Me? (With A Puzzled Face As I Pointed At Myself) No Way"
In the case of Chicago, I agree that when Cetera left, the band wasn't the same. He had become the face of Chicago, being featured prominently in the band's music videos and although he wasn't the only singer, he was the lead on every single from Chicago XVI and XVII. The band was forced to find a soundalike because of how massively popular he was, which softened the blow, but hurt them in the long run.
Why the comparison? Cetera's last album w/Chicago, #17 has sold more than all the albums "combined" featuring Schelff...in the last 20 years! Then again, LZep IV alone matches what Chicago has sold in their lifetime...
Originals can't be duplicated just imitated! Peter Cetera can sustain and support his voice without cracking it. Jason's voice keeps cracking and is not consistent. He sings well. However, Cetera's voice is what made the difference for Chicago.
I am not a fan of either, but whoever the guy was in the black jacket sucked big time - in fact the whole band sounds like he is singing to a karaoke track. They should have had Daryl Hall join the band.
Don't confuse love ballets with bubble-gum duets (neither of them I like). Even the great Robert Plant has done them w/Alison Krauss. The point was, who's better Jason or Peter? The answer to that question can be seen on YouTube, "Call on Me", Mexico. Jason sings the third verse in the "beginning" of the song. It's like drunk karaoke! Classic Jason.
Peter's got the stronger, more textured voice. His voice was truly unique. Obviously Jason can't compete with that. But we shouldn't knock Jason or Chicago. What did you expect Cjhicago to do? Just fold up and die after Peter left? To their credit, Chicago has continued to make albums, tour, and evolve with the times. Peter has as well. He was great on the David Foster and Friends show on PBS recently. I wish both Peter and Chicago well.
Speaking of Bubble Gum, when I was at the bubble gum age, I really didn't like Terry Kath's songs all that much. His music was too mature for me. As I got older I really began to appreciate it fully.
Alma Mater, Hope For Love, not big hits, but very soulful and moving songs.
I was disappointed when Peter left my favorite band, but having been in a band I understand a bit better why these things happen.
At 36' Peter is way off..Jason has soooo much more real passion..amd i am an old 60's chicagp fan..peter's passion left after Terry died..not that i blame hin
Fact: Cetera made this Chicago's 2nd #1 Billboard Chart (1st one "If you leave me now"). Jason has "never" and will "never" have a #1 Billboard Hit w/Chicago or solo. BTW, Cetera has had two #1s as a solo artist.
Peter's voice is amazingly beautiful!!

Gah!!!!!! Jason, STOP singing!!!!!!!! You are trying wayyyyy to hard and it's killing your voice.
SKyESTaRR23 1 year ago 3
Even by today's standards, Chicago Transit Authority in 1969 was edgey ROCK/FUSION thanks to Terry Kath. Peter Cetera led the band into the sappy ballady Chicago Band as it is known today. For that I am pissed.
chach2000 1 year ago

That's the simple truth.
chrishixx 1 year ago
There is no comparison between Cetera and Scheff. Cetera is Rhodes Scholar and Scheff has a G.E.D.

shanemate8 1 year ago
Jason could not come close to Peter even on his best day, especially singing through his nose. If Peter was to return to the group, it would no longer be a tribute group to themselves, but a bonafide hit making group once again, and the vitality oaand original sound would once again be present.
MrLen1955 2 years ago 2
Either way, they both are good. Nice mix. I like the the way the horns have evolved over the years, getting much more "punchy" and flavorful. Both singers sound great, no matter what the year. It would be nice to see Peter join the band just one more time, for old time sake, side by side with Jason and the others. ahhh wishful thinking. I would pay goooood money to see that.

NO contest PC writer and singer par excellence. Nice mashup...thanx for posting.

'Ol Peter should have never left the band. He knew he had the voice in giving Chicago it's boost in all of their songs. Really quite not the same after he left. Bottom line! :)
coreyang08 2 years ago 2
It is hard... To Compare the 1980's version of this song when it was fresh and new and then the more modern version where expectations are high to sound the same as the 1980's. There is a 20 year gap that cannot be replaced or matched....I mean, even Peter can't sound like this anymore and the 2008 Jason is probably the closest person I know that can sound like the 1985 Peter did... But what do you think?
jsteed3 2 years ago
u're right! these 2 versions cannot be compared.

He is forcing his voice and he sounds like someone is squeezing his balls.
elpcmaster 2 years ago
Great comments. PCetera is definitely the bonafide original. He can't be beat. Does anyone know what the deal was with the breakup with Chicago? It seems so ambiguous. My theory is that other band members wld not allow Cetera to dictate and the breakup was acrimonious. They all seem very tight lipped about the thing over the years. Regardless, Scheff is an imitator.

and the winner is: JASON SCHEFF, no discussion, Jason is still irreplaceable, Jason sings witch more emotions
soundlikeFabian 2 years ago
Of course it's Peter (the best) however, Jason is probably the best replacement when you really think about how hard it is to replace P.C. Jason really does deserve credit. To be honest neither Peter nor Jason can really sound great singing this song anymore- in their older age. Shame we all have to get old, lol.

Jason sings this song with much more emotion and he is far from the NEW guy. He's been with the band longer then Peter was.
JenniferInMichigan 2 years ago
Jason Scheff cannot sing in tune to save his life. Cetera owns him vocally. PC is a world class singer and bassist, JS is a world class bass player. That simple.
chuckpowell 2 years ago
Peter is the best but he is too old to come back to Chicago now. Everything he performs now is in a lower key. Peter prove me wrong and come back to Chicago. I know you don't need the money, but the fans that made you a wealthy man want to see you with Chicago again.
beatlenut99 2 years ago 2
Casi siempre las comparaciones son odiosas, pero en éste caso, vale comentar que existe una amplia diferencia de talento y profesionalismo en favor de Peter Cetera.

Are the parts w/Cetera pre-1986? That's about the time Peter left and I'm unsure if he ever came back for a "re-union" tour.
24Lancelot 2 years ago
They had to hire someone to sing the old songs, I just don't think this guy is cutting the mustard...
mrmcgregor2000 2 years ago
Well...I'll always love this band. Thank God for albums! I was never much for live music. It's not easy to hit the right note every time. Especially when you're moving around. But honestly, I don't like to compair the two. Jason is Jason and Peter is Peter. Post Peter is ok. Pre Jason is better. I love more songs pre Jason. But I love a few post peter songs too. Jason needs to sing his own songs. Since Peter is gone, so should his songs.

This Jason guy is bad. Bring Peter back to the band.

LRomero910 2 years ago 2
when i saw chicago for the first time, 18 years ago, i thought that jason was peter...later i found that i was wrong! i admire jason, he is a great singer/bass player...but peter is much, much better...i think that the guy who writes the song is the only able to sing it...peter experienced the situations...wrote the song...and he sings with passion! jason just interpretes the song...he does a great job keeping the band alive, but peter gave them soul, with the original members...peter is best!

JASON is more group
cartunetto 2 years ago
Cetera holds the notes much better . Also has a better voice . No contest . But Jason is still a good singer .
sj1778 2 years ago
Peter all the way.
specifictender 2 years ago
1. Peter can berley hold on to a steady note for more than a second.
2. He already mumbles the words and still gets creamed by Jason.
3. Cetera is prety much usless as a bass player.
Alongcomesawoman 2 years ago
I guess you've never heard Cetera play bass and even if the first two were true, Scheff would come out the loser because he's essentially a mimic of Cetera.
CharlesNigro 2 years ago
Although when he started with Chicago in 1986, Jason sounded really good, he hasn't sang in tune since 1994. Proof positive right here on this video. There's no comparison in the vocal department as Peter was always amazing and at over 60, still sounds great (proven by his live Christmas special this past year). On a technical level, Jason is a better bass player, but Cetera hasn't really played in years. In his prime though, Peter was a much better groove player and an true bass innovator

do you dum asses know that jason has been with the band sence 1985
hardrocker2484 2 years ago
I know full well that he's been with the band since 1985, making him the longest-tenured lead singer, but it hasn't exactly been a productive run. He spent the first three years essentially imitating Cetera and by the time he found his own voice, the band was long past its heyday. Now the band is on the oldies circuit singing their old songs with a new album once a decade pretty much.
CharlesNigro 2 years ago
Jason was singing outside at downtown Vegas. A definite disadvantage.

For me the singer makes the band, when he leaves the band isn't really the same. No matter who takes the lead.
Hal566 2 years ago
In the case of Chicago, I agree that when Cetera left, the band wasn't the same. He had become the face of Chicago, being featured prominently in the band's music videos and although he wasn't the only singer, he was the lead on every single from Chicago XVI and XVII. The band was forced to find a soundalike because of how massively popular he was, which softened the blow, but hurt them in the long run.
CharlesNigro 2 years ago
yeah, even though im not a ac/dc fan the new guy they got for that band is probably the only successful soundalike i've heard.

Classic Jason.
ledzep723 2 years ago
Peter's got the stronger, more textured voice. His voice was truly unique. Obviously Jason can't compete with that. But we shouldn't knock Jason or Chicago. What did you expect Cjhicago to do? Just fold up and die after Peter left? To their credit, Chicago has continued to make albums, tour, and evolve with the times. Peter has as well. He was great on the David Foster and Friends show on PBS recently. I wish both Peter and Chicago well.
Anthony881985 2 years ago
#1 Singles?? What, his bubble gum duets with Amy Grant and Cher? Yeah real winners. Is career really took off after he dumped the band.
sportnut1970 2 years ago
Speaking of Bubble Gum, when I was at the bubble gum age, I really didn't like Terry Kath's songs all that much. His music was too mature for me. As I got older I really began to appreciate it fully.
Alma Mater, Hope For Love, not big hits, but very soulful and moving songs.
I was disappointed when Peter left my favorite band, but having been in a band I understand a bit better why these things happen.
at90percent 2 years ago
At 36' Peter is way off..Jason has soooo much more real passion..amd i am an old 60's chicagp fan..peter's passion left after Terry died..not that i blame hin

Fact: Cetera made this Chicago's 2nd #1 Billboard Chart (1st one "If you leave me now"). Jason has "never" and will "never" have a #1 Billboard Hit w/Chicago or solo. BTW, Cetera has had two #1s as a solo artist.
