I F**K'n love the Clash. I have always loved punk, but the Clash had more of a twinge to their stuff. You could hear alot of raggae, Soul, Latin,Rockabilly and other forms of music in their stuff after "Givem enough Rope". "London Calling" I think was the beginning to more expression of their influences. I like Booker T and the MGs version too.
has anyone else noticed that the guitar "riff" is very similar to that on Anarchy in the U.K. ,then at about 1:56 we have what sounds very like the guitar intro to Pretty Vacant. I haven't listened to Booker T's original yet but regardless of who is nicking off who The Clash are definately contenders for best band in the world title. As well as being one of most inspirational voices of their generation
@MatthewMarkBritton I cant reduce my favortte Clash songs to 5. It would have to be at least 15: Clash City Rockers Hammersmith All the Young Punks Stay Free White Riot Death or Glory Police and Thieves I Fought the Law Complete Control Armagideon Time Career Opportunities Garageland Tommy Gun London Calling Hateful Rudy Cant Fail Spanish Bombs Clampdown Guns of Brixton Train in Vain Police on My Back Midnight Log Washington Bullets One More Time Ghetto Defendant ok, that's 25
clash city rockers.last gang in town.all the young punks.white man. complete control.death or glory.police on my back.police and thieves.red angel dragnet. rudi can't fail.
mine top 10 : 1.london calling 2.white riot 3.complete control 4.rock the casbah 5.londons burning 6.i m not down 7.guns of brixton 8.garageland 9.1977 10.deny
Favourite songs: 1) Armigedeon time 2) Complete Control (From Here To Eternity Version) 3) Clampdown 4) Julie's Been Working For the Drug Squad 5) Time Is Tight 6) 1977 7) White Riot 8) Bankrobber 9) The Magnifecent Seven 10) Should I stay Or Should I Go And 11, cos i had to choose at least one more: Gates Of The West
Can't help but give my favorites. . . not necessarily in this order. . . 1. Safe European Home 2. Train in Vain 3. Rudy Can't Fail 4. Should I Stay or Should I Go 5. Charlie Don't Surf 6. The Leader 7. Something About England 8. The Prisoner 9. Gates of the West 10. Clash City Rockers
@Littlealex49th Eye cannot speak for the incredible Booker T, but I bet he loves the fact that the Clash paid him such a wonderful tribute, so grow up li'l Teabagger.
This is a great version of this song. Further it's good because it caused people to go back and hear the Booker T and the MGs version. One reason the Clash were great was because their music had roots. It wasn't derivative, sing songy, dreamy crap of some current bands.
I'm sorry, but London Calling, Rock The Casbah and Death Or Glory arent even in the top 20 Clash songs. Maybe they are for some who came to the Clash late, but they all have a way to go before they beat White Riot or What's My Name. You see, the Clash made a couple of records before London Calling. Also, their masterpiece is Sandinista, NOT, definitely NOT, London Calling.
i love the clash with a passion, saw them twice and very few bands play with such passion, however, all though it is not a bad cover...you can't beat booker t and the mg's...it is their song, mark, x
@bostonirishpunk i cant be sure about that, but i suspect that it may be true when you listen to the nice plodding base line. it is a good warm up. have you listened to the original by "booker t and the mg's". i saw the clash twice..they were excellent
@markalotify Hey, ya, discovered that even before this clash released this. The "best band of all frigging time" and i only got to see them once - boston 79.
This is a brilliant instrumental. Favourite clash songs should include 'Stay Free', 'Clash City Rockers', 'The Right Profile', 'Know Your Rights', 'The Call Up'.
I think this shows the true soul and roots Joe Strummer and the boys had. They were true to Rock And Roll and true to their on style of it as well. When asked about being a "punk" band He didn't deny it but he just said "we're a rock and roll band with a purpose,ya cunt"...Even though he even mixed in reggae beats he incorporated the 2 brilliantly...... I miss ya Joe ,Rest in peace, mate!
It's not bad actually. Better than I thought it would be. It's just not the same without an organ accompaniment though, and the guitar doesn't replace it very well I don't think. Some of the notes are off too.
i rather like the one from 1969
