The US release. By the time it crossed over they were the Guess Who? I don't know when they dropped the "?" The Expressions included Jim Kale, Gary Peterson and Randy Bachman, all core Guess Who. Up north the 45 stayed "Chad Allan and the Expressions (Guess Who?)" on Quality Records "Golden Treasures" back-catalog line for prairie jukeboxes and radio stations: Quality QGT 051X. Backside was "Stop Teasin' Me" (R. Bachman). Chad Allan did a lot for Winnipeg's music scene.
Actually, The Guess Who released this song in 1965 on their album of the same name. The Who's version doesn't show up until Furious Prelude, a bootleg album of their appearance in 1968 at the Fillmore East. The band was likely performing the song in live shows, but the first "official" Who album it appears on is Live At Leeds, released in1970.
@cyberties Yessss, but,,,, the guess who did'nwrite it either. and the first comment just said the best version was by the who at leeds and the second comment said so close it's the guess who ... so if you are splitting hairs no one's talkin about the guess who I guess
I was not saying one version is better (they're similar versions & it's a matter of taste), just that the Guess Who's version predated the Who's. I remembered listening to 45's in the basement of a friend in the summer of 1965 and we had the Guess Who's version of this song, Land of 1000 Dances by Cannibal and the Headhunters, 96 Tears by ? and the Mysterions, etc. I never even knew the Who's did this tune until I saw the movie Woodstock.
@kidtronic The album title was Shakin All Over and the words right under it were "Guess Who?" Further down, it named the band, Chad & the Expressions. The record label was trying to disguise a Canadian group as a British Invasion band. The 45" single that I owned showed Guess Who? in the place where they usually named the artist. The record buying public thought that was the group's name, so Chad & the Expressions changed their name to Guess Who? In the end, it was the same group.
@cyberties The 45 label is Chad Allan and the Expressions with "(Guess Who?)" appearing underneath. No one has mentioned the killer version of this by Suzi Quattro, I could only find a noisy 1970s boot of a live version out there, but for me that connects to Those Darlins. Suzi was 10 when the song aired in the UK and 15 when the Winnpeg version hit the Midwest.
@kidtronic The 45 RPM version of which I am talking is shown on the YOUTUBE video:
youtube.com/watch?v=zTrd9NORuLY . As you can see, it says GUESS WHO? not Chad Allan et. al. (although Allan is given producing and arrangining credits).
@chlore2004. What? You sexist fuck! This song is for either. Besides, Those Darlins kick ass. Not only are they top notch performers, they could take "My Ding-a-ling" and rewrite it to where it would fit. So go suck your own ding-a-ling-a-ling, you ding-a-ling!
