He did a commercial in, like, the late 90s, still giving out the number the same way. I think I left a msg saying he needed to get with the times and say 898-7100 at least.
Back when Belvedere Construction was located on Livernois and 8 Mile, a family friend was a teller at Detroit Bank & Trust. She said that Belvedere(His real name was Maurice Zell) used to come in every single day screaming about his money. Needless to say, the tellers lived in fear of having to service him.
This family friend was telling my parents about this over dinner and I got in trouble when I chirped,"Just tell the guy to go F#ck himself.

Yes, Mr. Belvedere, you were so bland, yet so oddly entertaining. It's beautiful that you found love with a water heater and produced offspring to carry on your life's mission.
Some things you never forget. Tyler 8-7100,Rita Bell, Bill Kennedy, the Sheik, Big Time Wrestling, Faygo, Santa's Village at J L Hudson. God damn Detroit, you made a lot of nice memories. Marvel the Mustang, Choo Choo Charlie and his Good 'n' Plenty, Boblo Island, Zeppelin at the Silverdome (4/2-/77, I have a recording and yes, I was there), Bob Seger at the Knob, Nugent, Iggy and the Stooges,Harpo's, Bittersweet Alley, Alice Cooper, the Scene, KISS at Cobo. Detroit, you will always rock!
Yeah, I remember Ollie Fretter. He'd give you 10 lbs of coffee if he couldn't beat your best deal--even if you don't drink coffee. Then there was Bond-Bilt. I remember Belvedere stole Puff the Magic dragon for his jingle. Yeah, those were the days.
It sure looks like Mr. Belvedere. Used to crack up when about 2 in the morning his commercial would come on telling us to go outside and take a good look at the house. Nobody in their right mind would go out at that hour unless you wanted to die. I also remember Sonny Elliot doing the weather.
Gotta love Mr.Beledere, even if he was even more crooked than Richard Nixon.

That's the former owner and president of Belvedere Construction. He was an icon in Detroit in the early 1970's. I still have his poster.

He had his own show on WKBD too, in the 70's. His sidekick was another Detroit businessman, appliance dealer Ollie Fretter.
meesterfonnyboy 3 years ago 2
He advertised on the old Bill Kennedy at the Movies show.
t4763rb 3 years ago 4
No, that's not true. he never had his own show
on WKBD. Both he and Fretter had commercials produced by WKBD, but never a "show"...
